Windows 8 boots 'too quickly' to be interrupted, Microsoft adding a new 'boot options' menu

Windows 8 boots 'too quickly' to be interrupted, Microsoft adding a new 'boot options' menu

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

Did you know that an SSD-equipped Windows 8 PC can boot up in under seven seconds? Watch the video below if you don't believe it, Microsoft has really optimized the hell out of the startup operations of its next OS — although that has come at a somewhat amusing cost: you no longer get enough time to interrupt the boot process. The current ability to press F8 while your PC is powering up and the ever-familiar BIOS menu prompt of "Press F2 to enter setup" will both be missing from Windows 8 computers, simply because the hardware and software have advanced to such an extent as to leave users with too little time to access them.

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

We knew it was coming, and yesterday Microsoft turned off access to the Windows Phone Marketplace for devices that aren’t running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Microsoft made the move because it wanted only devices with the added security and performance enhancements built into Marketplace Windows Phone 7.5 to access the Market. Further, making Windows Phone 7.5 a requirement paves the way for features Microsoft is building into future Marketplace updates.

Microsoft Talks Multi-Monitor Support in Windows 8

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

If you're sitting in front of a computer all day long, it's not at all unlikely that you're working with multiple monitors. Microsoft announced that it's tweaked the multi-monitor support in Windows 8 to better take care of those of us that just can't work with a single display.
"From the very first public release and demonstrations of Windows 8 we have shown improvements over Windows 7 for multi-monitor scenarios and have shown how we support new Metro style apps within a multi-monitor environment," said Microsoft's Steven Sinofsky "We have continued to develop and refine features for multiple monitors and have significantly enhanced the experience as we move to our next milestone, the Rel....

AMD to Push Out Power Friendly Processors for Windows 8 Tablets

AMD to Push Out Power Friendly Processors for Windows 8 Tablets

Posted on May 24, 2012 by MG3

It hasn't been much of an ARM wrestle in the tablet space up to this point, and it's not because AMD and Intel haven't talked the talk. For the most part, they just haven't walked the walk, which has allowed ARM to dominate the category. That could change once Windows 8 comes into view in a few months, and if Microsoft's upcoming Metro infused OS proves popular on touchscreen tablets, you can expect a dogfight between AMD and Intel.

Microsoft Windows 7 sales estimates: Est. 350M shipped by end of 2012

Despite the fact that Windows 8 is expected to launch in October, Microsoft still has high hopes for its Windows 7 operating system. The software giant predicts that 350 million Windows 7 devices will ship by the end of 2012, Bloomberg reported. “It makes Windows the most popular single system,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a forum in Seoul, South Korea, although he didn’t provide any figures for comparison. Windows 7 was released in October 2009 and within two years, the operating system surpassed Windows XP to become the world’s most popular OS.

Here are 101 reasons not to buy Windows Phone 7.5

Here are 101 reasons not to buy Windows Phone 7.5

Posted on May 18, 2012 by MG1

Ah, Windows Phone 7.5 Mango! Just saying the name of the platform seems to start controversy - and don’t get us wrong, we appreciate the design work and the universally smooth performance Microsoft achieved with it, but it’s clear that so far it’s had a lukewarm reception at best, and it’s still behind in features when compared to the big two, Android and iOS.
But those are just vague words - Microsoft has been patching bugs, and polishing it out quickly, yet it seems that the list of shortcomings is just too big. How big? Ex-Symbian and currently MeeGo user known as SamKB on My-Symbian gives 101 reasons not to buy Windows Phone Mango, with a couple of bonus ones for the extra flare. Compili...

HP will make tablets again, this time with Windows 8

Posted on May 16, 2012 by MG1

Hewlett-Packard will start making tablets again, and the first new HP tablets will run on Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 platform. HP is coming fresh right after it kicked its webOS-based TouchPad tablet into the gutter over poor sales. Now, the company comes back with renewed hopes for Windows 8 tablets.
HP’s chief executive Meg Whitman is restarting production as an attempt to capitalize on “the extraordinary growth in tablet sales.” Most of that, though, we should note, is iPad growth as Apple’s tablet continues to dominate the industry.

If that's the case, mark your calendars for November, because according to reports, that's when Intel-based slates running Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system are set to land in retail. Anticipation is running high for next-generation tablets equipped with Microsoft's touch-friendly OS, which could prove game changing in the mobile space.
An un-named source "familiar with the device makers' plans" told CNet that the first wave of such tablets will show up in stores in November. The source described the schedule as being "tight" and that Windows 8 mobile devices won't be limited to strictly tablets, but over half of the ...

Microsoft to offer $15 Windows 8 upgrade, when you buy a Win7 PC

In need of a new computer, but holding out because you don't want to be saddled with a last-gen OS when Windows 8 lands? Worry not potential consumers, Microsoft plans to offer a cheap upgrade path to its latest and greatest if you buy in now. Well, not now, but soon. Starting June 2nd Redmond will offer a $15 upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Mary Jo Foley first reported the deal last week, but wasn't able to put a price on the offer. Now, Paul Thurrott is filling in those blanks. For $14.99 any new PC purchaser will be insured against the coming Metro revolution. This is hardly a new tactic for Microsoft, which has used similar deals to try and stave off steep drops in computer sale...

Intel: Windows 8 on ARM Is an Uphill Fight

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Windows 8 is stirring up a fair deal of controversy for Microsoft. Now, Intel has come out as saying that it thinks that running the new OS on ARM hardware is going to prove difficult.
During an investor meeting, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini pointed out that the heritage of x86 hardware will make support for Windows 8 far, far more straightforward than ARM-powered devices. He explained:
"I think they have a big uphill fight. We have the advantage of the incumbency, advantage of the legacy support. Not just in terms of applications but devices."

ZTE Windows Phones coming to the U.S. by year's end

ZTE Windows Phones coming to the U.S. by year's end

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

ZTE wants to grow its Windows Phone business beyond Europe and Asia, and eventually bring its smartphones to the U.S. We guess they’re talking about the Tania handset, though as far as we know they may have some other products in the pipeline, as well.
At the moment, the Chinese company has a number of low-to-mid range devices on sale across U.S. carriers (some of which are Android-based) and offering a Windows Phone device could prove beneficial for their bottom line. Moreover, with ZTE entering the picture, customers get another option, the one that doesn’t necessarily pulls them into expensive monthly contracts.
