Watch the video below if you don't believe it, Microsoft has really optimized the hell out of the startup operations of its next OS — although that has come at a somewhat amusing cost: you no longer get enough time to interrupt the boot process. The current ability to press F8 while your PC is powering up and the ever-familiar BIOS menu prompt of "Press F2 to enter setup" will both be missing from Windows 8 computers, simply because the hardware and software have advanced to such an extent as to leave users with too little time to access them.

We knew it was coming, and yesterday Microsoft turned off access to the Windows Phone Marketplace for devices that aren’t running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Microsoft made the move because it wanted only devices with the added security and performance enhancements built into Marketplace Windows Phone 7.5 to access the Market. Further, making Windows Phone 7.5 a requirement paves the way for features Microsoft is building into future Marketplace updates.

Dell: Windows 8 touchscreen devices to be priced higher

Touchscreen laptops and tablets with the upcoming Windows 8 OS will be priced higher than their non-touchscreen counterparts, Dell's CEO said on Tuesday.
Dell will offer a full complement of Windows 8 products when Microsoft launches its new OS, CEO Michael Dell said during the company's quarterly earnings call. The touchscreen Windows 8 products will occupy higher price bands, which could mean higher profit margins for Dell, he said.

Microsoft Windows 7 sales estimates: Est. 350M shipped by end of 2012

Despite the fact that Windows 8 is expected to launch in October, Microsoft still has high hopes for its Windows 7 operating system. The software giant predicts that 350 million Windows 7 devices will ship by the end of 2012, Bloomberg reported. “It makes Windows the most popular single system,” Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said at a forum in Seoul, South Korea, although he didn’t provide any figures for comparison. Windows 7 was released in October 2009 and within two years, the operating system surpassed Windows XP to become the world’s most popular OS.

The Focus 2 has the same 4-inch, WVGA (480 x 800 pixel) Super AMOLED display and 5 megapixel camera as the original Focus released in 2010, but it does sport a faster, 1.4GHz processor and Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. Hewlett-Packard will start making tablets again, and the first new HP tablets will run on Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 platform. HP is coming fresh right after it kicked its webOS-based TouchPad tablet into the gutter over poor sales. Now, the company comes back with renewed hopes for Windows 8 tablets.

In need of a new computer, but holding out because you don't want to be saddled with a last-gen OS when Windows 8 lands? Worry not potential consumers, Microsoft plans to offer a cheap upgrade path to its latest and greatest if you buy in now. Well, not now, but soon. Starting June 2nd Redmond will offer a $15 upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 Pro. Mary Jo Foley first reported the deal last week, but wasn't able to put a price on the offer. Intel: Windows 8 on ARM Is an Uphill Fight

Windows 8 is stirring up a fair deal of controversy for Microsoft. Now, Intel has come out as saying that it thinks that running the new OS on ARM hardware is going to prove difficult.
During an investor meeting, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini pointed out that the heritage of x86 hardware will make support for Windows 8 far, far more straightforward than ARM-powered devices. He explained:
"I think they have a big uphill fight. We have the advantage of the incumbency, advantage of the legacy support. Not just in terms of applications but devices."

ZTE Windows Phones coming to the U.S. by year's end

ZTE wants to grow its Windows Phone business beyond Europe and Asia, and eventually bring its smartphones to the U.S. We guess they’re talking about the Tania handset, though as far as we know they may have some other products in the pipeline, as well.
At the moment, the Chinese company has a number of low-to-mid range devices on sale across U.S. carriers (some of which are Android-based) and offering a Windows Phone device could prove beneficial for their bottom line. Moreover, with ZTE entering the picture, customers get another option, the one that doesn’t necessarily pulls them into expensive monthly contracts.
