Samsung Galaxy S II and HTC Amaze 4G on sale at T-Mobile

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

Sure, we knew this day was coming, but now the wait is finally over. Now the main question for T-Mobile customers at the end of their contract is whether to pick up the Samsung Galaxy S II or HTC Amaze 4G. Both handsets are now on sale from the carrier, running $229 and $259, respectively (plus plan, post-rebate, naturally). Thankfully, we've got a full review of the 4.52-inch Galaxy S II magenta edition and a hands-on with the 4.3-inch Amaze 4G, which should help make the deciding a bit easier.

Upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II update comes with bigger icons, FOTA widget

Upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II update comes with bigger icons, FOTA widget

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

Samsung will soon start pushing a new firmware update for its flagship Galaxy S II smartphone. As far as we know, it will be a small release, packing two noticeable changes – bigger icons (up to 30% bigger) and the System Update widget, from where users will be able to quickly see whether a new software version is available and promptly take action.
Aside from that, it’s kinda safe to assume there will be some other changes under the hood, though at the moment we can’t confirm this. Similarly, I guess some of the Samsung apps will get tweaks and the device should be faster after the update.

Samsung compares the iPhone 4S with its Galaxy S II

Samsung compares the iPhone 4S with its Galaxy S II

Posted on Oct 05, 2011 by MG1

If our “iPhone 4S vs competition” chart is not good enough for you, maybe you’ll like Samsung’s own chart. They’ve prepared a table that compares their flagship smartphone, Galaxy S II, with the brand new iPhone 4S. Needless to say, the Korean company wants to show us their product is superior in many aspects.
For instance, the Galaxy S II has a bigger screen – the AT&T version has 42% more screen area (length x width), while Sprint’s and T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II will have 58% more screen area than the iPhone 4S.
When it comes to connectivity, the Galaxy S II’s HSPA+ network speeds are at least 50% faster with AT&T 21Mbps and three times faster with T-Mobile’s 42 MBPS than the iPhone 4S’s 14Mb...

Samsung Galaxy S II is the king of Android sales in the UK

Samsung Galaxy S II is the king of Android sales in the UK

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when you consider the fact that Samsung has moved more than 10 million Galaxy S II units worldwide, but the Galaxy S II is the top selling Android smartphone in the UK.
The Galaxy S II is the best-selling smartphone ever produced by Samsung. With its 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, dual-core 1.2GHz Exynos processor and an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording capabilities what’s not to love?
There was one point in September, the third week of the month, where the Galaxy S II was purchased with a contract more than any other Android manufacturer in the entire country. That is domination when you consider the competition that Samsung is con...

White Samsung Galaxy S II hitting Canada's Bell on October 7th

White Samsung Galaxy S II hitting Canada's Bell on October 7th

Posted on Oct 03, 2011 by MG3

Well if all those British carriers can get the white version of the Samsung Galaxy S II, so can a Canada-based operator. Bell Mobility is Samsung’s “partner in crime” and will start selling the super-sexy smartphone on October 7th. In other words, if you live in Canada, still haven’t “pushed the button” and grabbed some device, maybe it’s wise to wait for one more week. You’ll be able to grab this baby… or perhaps the Apple iPhone 5 (or that’s 4S). If you do choose to “take the Android road,” you’ll have to pour out CA$149.95 for the white Galaxy S II along with committing on a way-too-long three-year contract. Alternatively, you will be able to cash out CA$599.95 and grab the phone sans any...

T-Mobile announces HTC Amaze 4G, Samsung Galaxy S II and Sonic 4G Mobile Hotspot

Posted on Sep 27, 2011 by MG1

Moments ago, T-Mobile took the wraps off three new devices. The newly introduced HTC Amaze 4G (pictured above) and Samsung Galaxy S II are the first smartphones, T-Mobile tells us, that will take advantage of the carrier’s blazing fast HSPA+ network with 42Mbps speeds. The Amaze 4G features a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, an 8-megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording, a rear illuminated sensor for night shots, a 4.3-inch qHD Super LCD screen, NFC support and the Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread OS. Hit the break for more.

Samsung Galaxy S II hits the 10 million sold mark with no help from the U.S.

Samsung Galaxy S II hits the 10 million sold mark with no help from the U.S.

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

It took the Samsung Galaxy S II one less month than the original model to reach 10 million in sales. And that total, compiled over 6 months, does not include any sales from the U.S. where the phone only recently was launched on Sprint as we reported. Considering the pent-up demand for the phone Stateside, and the great response that those who purchased the Samsung Galaxy S II, Sprint Epic 4G Touch have had to the device, the 10 million sold figure is going to rise sharply by the time Sprint, T-Mobile and AT&T are all done selling the device in the States..

NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Orange France in October

NFC-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II coming to Orange France in October

Posted on Sep 26, 2011 by MG3

Orange is betting heavily on the prospects of contactless payments, powered by NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. In the UK, they will be piloting the service using Samsung’s bada-powered Wave 578, while for its own backyard they’ll use the Samsung Galaxy S II. As far as I’ve understood, they won’t be offering some special version of the smartphone — rather they seem to talk about NFC-enabled SIM cards, something South Korea’s SK Telecom also wants to try out.

Samsung Galaxy S II graphics processor found to be fastest among current smartphones

Samsung Galaxy S II graphics processor found to be fastest among current smartphones

Posted on Sep 20, 2011 by MG1

We didn't have high hopes or hard numbers for the Mali-400 GPU desinged by ARM that found its way in Samsung's first dual-core chipset Exynos, but going with PowerVR was obviously no longer possible in light of the battles between Apple and Samsung.
The last year's finest Apple A4 and Samsung Humingbird both utilized PowerVR, but this year the new dual-core chipsets A5 and Exynos went separate ways with both the architecture and the graphics subsystems.
AnandTech, however, compared the Mali-400 GPU performance, and found it to be better than other graphics chips in current high-end smartphones, including for the Adreno 220 GPU as found in Qualcomm's Snpadragon S3 in phones like the HTC Sensa...

Posted on Sep 19, 2011 by MG1

The first of Samsung’s GALAXY S II devices to land in the United States, Sprint’s “Samsung GALAXY S II, Epic 4G Touch”, is now available online for $199.99 with a new two-year Sprint contract. The Epic 4G Touch has all of the trimmings you’d expect from a high-end smartphone including a gorgeous AMOLED Plus display, 16GB of storage, a 1.2GHz dual-core Samsung Exynos processor, an 8-megapixel camera capable of capturing 1080p HD video, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video chats and support for Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network. We are currently working on our review of the Epic 4G Touch, which we will be posting in the coming days. We can already say the GALAXY S II is among Sprint’s best smar...

ASA decrees iPhone 4 is thinner than Samsung Galaxy S II

ASA decrees iPhone 4 is thinner than Samsung Galaxy S II

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

For a while, the Samsung Galaxy S II supposedly claimed the title of world’s thinnest smartphone – thinner than even the iPhone 4. We all just assumed this was true but Apple knew the real truth and it continued to advertise the iPhone 4 with this title in commercials. So, the U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) received a complaint on the matter and decided to step in to solve things once and for all.
Let’s get to the nitty-gritty: The iPhone 4 has a flat, uniform design, which means everywhere you look on the device is going to be exactly 9.3 mm. The Samsung Galaxy S II does not have a uniform design, particularly noticeable with the odd bulge on the bottom side. At its thinnest p...

LTE-enabled Samsung Galaxy S II heading to Rogers Wireless in Canada

Posted on Sep 15, 2011 by MG1

Canada’s Rogers Wireless will be adding the LTE-enabled version of the Samsung Galaxy S II to its portfolio. Starting from September 28th, customers in Toronto and Ottawa will be among the first ones to get their hands on the super-fast and super-awesome Android smartphone. Yep this includes our very own Simon Sage, who will undoubtedly try to get a review unit and let you know what he thinks about it.
Alternatively, the carrier will also offer the LTE Rocket mobile hotspot (Sierra Wireless AirCard 754S), Rogers LTE Rocket stick (which is now available in Ottawa), with other LTE products — including some HTC smartphone and a tablet — to follow shortly.
In related news, we hope Verizon will a...

Samsung claims T-Mobile Galaxy S II uses 1.5GHz Snapdragon

Samsung claims T-Mobile Galaxy S II uses 1.5GHz Snapdragon

Posted on Sep 14, 2011 by MG1

Samsung in a response on Twitter gave an answer as to the mystery of the processor in the T-Mobile Galaxy S II. A social media spokesperson said it was the 1.5GHz Snapdragon APQ8060, the same processor as in the TouchPad 4G. Every other Galaxy S II version so far uses Samsung's own 1.2GHz Exynos chip.
It's still not clear why the T-Mobile version will have needed one of Qualcomm's chips, although it may have to do with network choices. T-Mobile's need for the 1,700MHz band on its HSPA+ 3G, which might go to a rare 42Mbps, could have pushed Samsung to change processors to get the frequency support it needed.
When it ships, which is expected in mid-to-late October, the T-Mobile edition may not...
