Microsoft Found Cause For Messaging Bug, Testing Fix

Microsoft Found Cause For Messaging Bug, Testing Fix

Posted on Dec 29, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft apparently found the root cause of the messaging bug and is currently testing a fix.
Two weeks ago, WinRumors revealed the bug, which would crash the device and kill the messaging app upon receiving a special text message, and contacted Microsoft with the details, including the specific text which otherwise has not been published.
Now Microsoft apparently contacted Khaled Salameh, who originally found the bug. He tweeted that Microsoft’s security team “confirmed the WP7 SMS Bug and found the root cause, a fix is currently under testing”.
However, it should be noted that this bug seems to be common across a wide range of Microsoft products using its Silverlight/WPF framework, which ...

In their look back over the past year, Distimo has confirmed in their monthly report that Marketplace is now the 3rd largest app platform, after iOS and the Android Marketplace, and the 4th largest app store, after the iPhone app store, iPad app store and Android Marketplace.

Blackberry App world takes up the 5th position followed by the Nokia Ovi store.

Of note is that Marketplace showed the biggest growth of over 400% year on year, and that the Marketplace for Windows Mobile never passed 2500 available apps.

Nokia's CES 2012 press invite confirms Windows Phone device launch

Nokia's CES 2012 press invite confirms Windows Phone device launch

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Next month thousands of people will convene in Las Vegas, Nevada to attend the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. If you’ve never been to CES, it’s worth checking out. If you’re a member of the press however, CES is about as terrifying as being diagnosed with testicular cancer. It’s three days of pushing, shoving, running to meetings, networking, drinking, and eating stuff that’s called food, but really it’s just a cocktail of cheap highly processed chemicals. After my fourth or fifth CES I made a promise to myself to never, ever, go there again. It’s honestly that bad. Anyway, why is CES so freaking important in the first place? It’s where nearly every company on the face of the planet announc...

Android is immune to viruses, Windows Phone is not, says Orange customer support

Android is immune to viruses, Windows Phone is not, says Orange customer support

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

Okay, Windows Phone handsets may not be perfect when it comes to malware and exploits, but they are definitely safer than their Android counterparts, don't you think? Well, we now know of at least one person in the world who would disagree with that statement, and the disturbing part is that their job expects them to be much more knowledgeable on the matter.

What you see below is an excerpt from a conversation between an Orange service representative and a subscriber. In a nutshell, the unsuspecting user is being misled into believing that Windows Phone devices are prone to getting viruses, while Android smartphones are more or less immune to such problems.

The last Windows Phone General Manager, Charlie Kindel, may have been a longtime Microsoft vet, but the company's looked beyond Redmond for his permanent replacement. As BGR reports, Microsoft has snagged Samsung's VP of of consumer and enterprise services, Gavin Kim, to lead the Windows Phone product team. In describing his new role, Kim tells BGR that he'll "be responsible to help set the future direction for the Windows Phone platform and to accelerate Microsoft's trajectory to win the hearts and minds of consumers, carriers, device manufacturers, developers and partners." Acer's first venture into Windows Phone arrives in France as the Allegro

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Remember the Acer W4? After seeing it at IFA 2011, it seems that it's finally ready to make some first impressions, and its blind date is with France. Known officially as the Allegro, Acer's inaugural Windows Phone isn't going over the top in the spec department: it has a 3.6-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, 8GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a 1,300mAh battery. However, a unique addition to this €299 ($425) device is a feature called Fast Charge, which allows the Allegro to get juiced up to 2.5 times faster than the rest of the company's lineup. Expect the device to land in France in mid-November with two color options -- white and ...

Microsoft wants Windows Phone to be “the most secure phone the market has ever seen.”

Microsoft wants Windows Phone to be “the most secure phone the market has ever seen.”

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

The company is looking for a software Development Engineer in Test to engage in “cutting edge fuzzing technology, pentesting, and other security tools to help us ship the most secure phone the market has ever seen.”
Windows Phone 7 has so far not really had any significant testing of their sandbox, and truth be told hackers have managed to work around most of the lock down features Microsoft has implemented so far e.g. the ability to jailbreak and sideload apps, and likely largely benefits from less attention, so this move is certainly welcome.

Orange exec says the future of Windows Phone depends on Nokia

Posted on Oct 24, 2011 by MG3

Orange is one of the biggest carrier with presence all around the world - from Europe to the Middle East and even Africa. It’s a key factor for the success of Windows Phone, but up until now, the support for Microsoft’s platform on the side of the carrier hasn’t resulted in user adoption. Quite the contrary.

Windows Phone 7 Facebook app finally crosses 1 million monthly active users

Windows Phone 7 Facebook app finally crosses 1 million monthly active users

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

It has been a hard slog, and now, on the eve of the one year anniversary of the launch of Windows Phone 7, the Windows Phone 7 built-in Facebook app has finally crossed the 1 million active user mark.
Based on earlier estimates this translates into about 6 million Windows Phone 7 users in total, a number I am sure far below what Microsoft expected to sell over the last 12 months, but still a reasonable constituent.
By comparison the Facebook for iPhone app has around 90 million users, while the Facebook for Android app has has 67 million.
Hopefully with a new generation of devices and more committed partners in the next 12 months Windows Phone will also cross these milestones at a significan...

Half of Symbian users would consider a Windows Phone from Nokia

Half of Symbian users would consider a Windows Phone from Nokia

Posted on Oct 17, 2011 by MG1

According to a poll taken by allaboutsymbian.com, a little less than half of the users of a Nokia Symbian device would consider purchasing a Windows Phone from the Finland based manufacturer.
Nokia’s global dominance has been on a steady decline over the last few years thanks to the substantial growth and popularity of their rivals. Realizing that Symbian might not be able to survive today’s market, Nokia has adopted Microsoft’s mobile platform in an attempt to compete.
Just a few weeks ago a leaked image surfaced of what is possible the Nokia Sea Ray, which many expect to me the manufacturer’s first Windows Phone powered handset. A combination of the young yet polished Windows Phone opera...

New Error on Marketplace – 805A01f4

New Error on Marketplace – 805A01f4

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

Windows Phone users are not new to errors when trying to use the app marketplace. Especially in the last few months errors and service interruptions have been common occurrences. Unfortunately there may be a brand new error affecting the marketplace. Users have been reporting an error code 805a01f4 when trying to download applications from the Windows Phone marketplace during the last few weeks.
I myself have been affected irregularly since the beginning of the week. A Microsoft Answers page for the error started up on the first of the month and is the first reference to the error that I have been able to find on the web. Most of those who have been affected, it seems, have been since ...
