Windows Phone only getting IPv6 support with Apollo

Windows Phone only getting IPv6 support with Apollo

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG1

According to a leaked recent Nokia presentation Windows Phone users will have to wait till Apollo before they can connect to IPv6-only networks.
In the middle of last year it had been believed Windows Phone 7 Mango will support IPv6 due some entries on Microsoft’s Mango .net documentation, but in practice on IPv6-only networks Windows Phones are not able to get IP addresses.
As can be seen from the graphic above while IPv6 support is very variable, Windows Phone has the poorest support amongst the major and not so major operating systems.

Google finally allows WP7 users to sync multiple calendars, Microsoft releases guide to switch from Gmail to Hotmail in 3 easy steps

Google finally allows WP7 users to sync multiple calendars, Microsoft releases guide to switch from Gmail to Hotmail in 3 easy steps

Posted on Jan 27, 2012 by MG1

Google has finally enabled Windows Phone 7 users to sync their phone with multiple Google calendars. Up till now WP7 users had to spoof the process by using an iOS device to select the calendars at m.google.com/sync since the feature had always been available on that platform.
Of course this does not mean Google are now Windows Phone fans – their instructions are still for Windows Mobile, a very deprecated platform now.
Microsoft has not made any pretence of being fans of Google, and have taken advantage of the recent brouhaha surrounding Google’s new permission to spy privacy policy to publish a short 3 step guide to moving your Gmail account to Windows Phone 7.

Windows Phone Tango to be sailing smooth with 256MB of RAM only, and include folders

Windows Phone Tango to be sailing smooth with 256MB of RAM only, and include folders

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

If you were wondering how exactly will Microsoft go about with Windows Phone supporting entry level devices for emerging markets, which Nokia is so popular with, wonder no more.
Turns out that the upcoming Windows Phone Tango update, besides lower screen resolutions, which we've heard from the very beginning rumors about it started, would also bring in the possibility to run well on less RAM, to the tune of merely 256MB, which is what 2010 Symbian devices like the Nokia N8 are using, for example.

Microsoft to speed up Windows Phone feature iteration

Microsoft to speed up Windows Phone feature iteration

Posted on Jan 24, 2012 by MG1

It seems that Microsoft's plan so far with Windows Phone has been to build the base and optimize the software before allowing hardware manufacturers to add new features, but it looks like Microsoft might be ready to start pushing the Windows Phone ecosystem a bit faster.
In an interview with Techradar, Microsoft's director of Mobile Communication Business Aaron Woodman said that Microsoft knew there was a lot of catch-up to be done to compete with the likes of iOS and Android, but that the company thinks that it has achieved that basic parity, and now will begin looking at more "innovative pieces". Much of that base work was put towards hardware optimization, which according to Woodman means...

Fake Chrome browser scamming users in Marketplace

Fake Chrome browser scamming users in Marketplace

Posted on Jan 24, 2012 by MG1

While the Marketplace certifiers may be good at keeping out malware (and we don’t really know this for sure either) they are certainly not good at keeping out crapware.
The latest is a fake Google Chrome browser, which the description boldly claims:
Keep Chrome Browser handy on your device, especially for those unavoidable times you are on a slow crowded network, away from Wi-Fi. This app is same as a google chrome web browser. It has most stylish search button. Facebook, Google, Yahoo! -with Chrome Browser, all your favorite sites work great on your windows phone.
The app is in fact simply an IE Shell and will work no better or worse than the built-in browser.

Nokia Windows Phone handsets coming to China in first half of 2012

Nokia Windows Phone handsets coming to China in first half of 2012

Posted on Jan 23, 2012 by MG1

A Nokia spokesman has told ITWorld that the Finnish company is planning to release a Windows Phone handset for the Chinese market in the first half of 2012.
The announcement is significant, given that the Chinese market will likely require customizations for the region, including changes to Marketplace to comply with the Chinese Government requirements.
ZTE is also planning a Chinese release for a Windows Phone 7 handset, but this will only come in Q3 2012.
Nokia has a 28% market share in China, and if the product is accepted there it may significantly boost Windows Phone 7 shipments.

ZTE reveals $20 to $30 cost of Windows Phone license

ZTE reveals $20 to $30 cost of Windows Phone license

Posted on Jan 20, 2012 by MG1

ZTE launched its Tania Windows Phone in the UK last night and provided some insight into the true costs of Windows Phone for manufacturers at the same time. ZTE executive Santiago Sierra, a portfolio manager for the company's UK arm, revealed to TrustedReviews that the firm pays between £15 and £20 ($23-$30) for a Windows Phone license from Microsoft.
The revelation is surprising to say the least. Other Windows Phone makers like HTC and Samsung are widely believed to pay around $10 to $15 per device. ZTE's figures appear to suggest that all is not fair in the Windows Phone licensing world, or that manufacturers are paying a lot more than previously expected. ZTE told us at the UK Tania launc...

ZTE bringing a Windows Phone to USA this year

ZTE bringing a Windows Phone to USA this year

Posted on Jan 19, 2012 by MG1

ZTE has told AllThingsD it intends to bring a Windows Phone to USA this year. The company already produces the low-end but good looking ZTE Tania, which is being sold carrier-branded by SFR in France.
The company will likely take a similar carrier-branded approach in USA.
“We understand the U.S. market is primarily a market driven by the carriers,” ZTE U.S. CEO Lixin Cheng said in an interview at last week’s Consumer Electronics Show. “Compared with some of our competitors, we are more willing to customize our product.”
Cheng noted that Microsoft is a key partner for his company for its current “Mango” version of Windows Phone, as well as for its upcoming “Tango” low-end effort. ZTE is also ...

Skype for Windows Phone 7 nears release

Skype for Windows Phone 7 nears release

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Ever since Skype was taken over by Microsoft back in October 2011, a Skype app for its Windows Phone 7 operating system has been on the cards. And now it looks as though it's nearly here after vice president of Skype division, Rick Osterloh, said: "we're working on a Windows Phone product that will be coming out soon," during an interview at CES 2012. The news that Skype will be heading to Windows Phone 7 has been hanging around for some time now as it was initially thought that Microsoft would be launching the Skype app a little earlier, possibly by the end of 2011. However it was not to be, so this "coming soon" CES 2012 quote is very timely. In actual fact, the term "coming soon" could me...

Nokia's Lumia 710, its first Windows Phone for the US, is on sale now

Nokia's Lumia 710, its first Windows Phone for the US, is on sale now

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG1

It's been a long time coming, but you can finally buy a Nokia Windows Phone in the US. T-Mobile launched the Lumia 710 today in black and white for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with the requisite 2-year contract. We still think it's a fair price, despite the few qualms we had with the device when we reviewed it, but the forthcoming Lumia 900 puts a damper on our enthusiasm for this device a bit. However, it's not for us; it's for first-time smartphone buyers, and still seems like a solid choice for that market. Despite the Lumia 710's status as an entry-level device, it's exciting to see Nokia have a major US release for the first time in months.

Windows Phone users download more apps than the Android folks, less than the iOS junkies

Windows Phone users download more apps than the Android folks, less than the iOS junkies

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

Microsoft, and the head of developer relations for Windows Phone in particular, Brandon Watson, released a fluff infographic today to explain how the app ecosystem performed in 2011. The Marketplace app store reached 50 000 applications recently, and the infographic shows what type and number of apps people are downloading. Turns out that the average Windows Phone user got 48 apps from there in 2011, compared to 30 for Android and 83 for iOS. This might have to do with the number of apps - although 50 000 sounds more than you'll need in a lifetime, iOS is ten times that, so people get enticed easily when a new quality app comes across. Another interesting part is that all in all 13 000 of t...

Microsoft teases 5

Microsoft teases 5 "must-have" games coming to Windows Phone in February

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

Microsoft’s Windows Phone already has a solid collection of over 55,000 apps, but users are always looking for new and better apps, and this February Redmond promises five “must have” titles will be coming to its mobile platform.

The new additions to WP’s Xbox LIVE collection include shooters, action and driving games for all tastes. Along with those new releases, Nokia has also said it’s collaborating with EA to bring 20 of its titles to the platform, so if you have a Nokia Windows Phone you’d get even more gaming action.

Windows Phone Marketplace accelerating, crosses 55,000 level mark, hits 2500 apps per week

At this stage we are really only covering every 10,000 app milestones on the Windows Phone Marketplace. AllaboutWindowsPhone is however a new site, and still very excited. They report that the Windows Phone 7 marketplace has hit the 2,500 app submissions per week rate for the first time, which predicts 60,000 apps by the 25th January.

'Smoked by Windows Phone' challenge to transition into an ad campaign

'Smoked by Windows Phone' challenge to transition into an ad campaign

Posted on Jan 11, 2012 by MG15

This certainly shouldn't be a surprise to anyone who saw the news about the challenge before, but it is looking like the $100 challenge that we've seen at CES to beat Windows Phone on speed will likely become an advertising campaign for Microsoft. The challenge itself has reportedly been going quite well for Windows Phone, at last check it had 21 wins and only one loss and one tie, but of course the challenge wasn't exactly a fair fight. It's not that the challenge was rigged exactly, but it was certainly designed so Windows Phone would win, much like any HTML5 "test" that you'll find on Microsoft's IE sites, or a Pepsi challenge (of course Pepsi tastes better than Coke on one sip, but after...
