Microsoft Windows Phone 7 Pro Reviews

MacNN‘s review Edit

As this review is as much about the OS as the phone, our thoughts can't help but turn to Windows Phone 7 and Microsoft's future first. In its current state, the OS is rough around the edges and isn't quite where it needs to be to spark much fear in Apple and Google. Without multitasking and a number of apps that were clearly rushed along for the sake of making a deadline, this OS is more of a 1.0 than a 7.

Windows Phone 7 is an impressive reimagining of the Windows Mobile brand. Gone is the staid, clunky corporate workings of the old platform and in its place is a slick, stylish, and easy to use modern replacement. Add in unique extras like the Xbox tie-in for gaming and the awesome Zune Pass for instant access to millions of tracks, and some pretty slick social network integration and you have a platform that looks set to compete with the best of them.

Engadget‘s review Edit

In our original preview, we said that Windows Phone 7 didn't quite feel like a complete smartphone OS yet. We'd like to come back and report that it finally has the fit and finish of a fully realized product, but that isn't exactly the case. Don't get us wrong: there's a lot to like or even love in WP7. Microsoft has done an outstanding job with lots of aspects of this UI, particularly when it comes to navigation and ease of use -- but there are holes here as well. It still feels like the company is a good year behind market leaders right now, and though it's clear the folks in Redmond are doing everything they can to get this platform up to snuff, it's also clear that they're not there yet.

LAPTOP Magazine‘s review Edit

Although we'd like to see some features added, Microsoft's completely revamped mobile OS saves users time and looks good doing it, all while providing a fun gaming and multimedia experience.

TechRadar UK‘s review Edit

The problem is that there are already other strong smartphone platforms on the market – Windows Phone 7 doesn't beat them hands down but it's a strong challenger that's only going to get better (especially because Microsoft will be sending updates out to all phones regularly, whatever the network or manufacturer) and you'll want to try it out to see if it suits you.

PC Magazine‘s review Edit

Yes, it's version 1.0, and it's missing some features and plenty of apps. But Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system is already a player in the mobile space.

While we don't have a crystal ball, we're confident that apps will come in time, and with them should follow the resurgence of Microsoft in the smartphone space. The new operating system is largely a success, and the handsets it has launched on are impressive pieces of kit.

Gizmodo‘s review Edit

Windows Phone 7 is really great. A solid foundation, it's elegant and joyful. True, a lot of that greatness is potential. But if anybody can follow through on their platform, it's Microsoft. Should you buy this instead of an iPhone or Android phone though? In six months, after the ecosystem has filled out, the answer will be more clear. But right now, Window Phone is definitely an option. Considering where Microsoft was just a year ago, that's saying a hell of a lot.

Pocket-lint‘s review Edit

From what we've seen of Microsoft's new operating system it is clear that Windows Phone 7 is an impressive consumer mobile operating system, with some nice touches and flashes of inspiration. We like the refreshing departure from sometimes busy interfaces that you’ll find elsewhere: Microsoft haven’t been scared to use white space and with screen sizes that give you plenty of space the mobile experience on Windows Phone 7 is great.

As we mention at the start, the overall interface feels very slick and generally pretty intuitive. The lack of any overarching organisation to the Live Tile interface can leave you a little flustered at first but once you 'get it' then it feels like a doddle to use, and though quite different in style it's easily as slick as iOS and WebOS.
