After years of being parallel, but not one, Android code is now getting into the latest Linux 3.3 kernel finally bringing clarity about how the open-source Android project should be handled and giving developers an easier path to create cross-platform applications. The kernels of Android and Linux have always been similar, but with this programmers will be able to run apps on the stock Linux kernel.

Netflix reveals Android app tests that keep it running on 'around 1000' devices daily

As leaked earlier in the week, PayPal has unveiled its own direct equivalent to Square's reader. PayPal Here's triangular reader lets anyone with an iPhone take card payments and, as expected, PayPal payments. Google Earth v6.2 is now available from Google's Play Store and Apple's iTunes App Store. The update offers KML support, which allows for layered lists consisting of things like real time flights, earthquakes, and city tours to be viewed. The update also includes stability and performance enhancements. Android users are also treated to Google+ and social media sharing as well as new zooming and pinch gesturing.

Samsung doesn't deny Android-based camera

Samsung has refused to confirm reports that it is working on an Android-based camera, only to say it is looking at the idea. The non-denial, which says 'it is something we are monitoring,' comes in response to reports from tech website Engadget that it is considering an 'open' camera operating system. However, while the site goes on to speculate that Android makes sense, based on its parent company's use of the OS on its smartphones, we think there are other reasons for Samsung to use Android.

Google Play client gets a small update to fix broken Market links on some Moto smartphones

Google has recently renamed Android Market to Google Play, but not all folks are happy with the change, namely those with select Motorola smartphones who got crappy links included with the brand new app. The update to the application (now in version 3.4.7) has been promptly released by Google to fix the issue users around the Interwebs have reported.

Google May Be Developing Motion Interface for Android

A patent filing made public last week suggests that Google is working to turn a device's front-facing camera into a motion-input system, allowing consumers to use gestures instead of greasing up the screen with fingerprints. If granted, the company could reportedly take this patent down several avenues, including incorporating the technology into Android itself, saving the tech for Motorola, or hording the patent for use against rivals Apple and Microsoft.

When developers first started to populate the Android Market, Google didn’t have an in-house solution for in-app transactions. As a result developers turned to third party payment options, such as PayPal, Boku, and Zong. While this solved the problem of enabling payments inside of Android apps, the multiple competing payment platforms hurt the rate at which app users purchased items (the “conversion rate”), because not all potential users would have the necessary payment account set up.

Google hastily updates Play Store, fixes broken Market on Motorola devices

Motorola Droid RAZR fans were left out in the cold when Google decided to pull the wraps off its revamped content hub. The new Play Store app didn't seem to bond too well with Motorola's Blur OS skin, leaving phones scanning desperately for a non-existent Android Market and trapping users out of the app version of the store. Google's got on it quickly though, with a new Google Play update out now, righting what was once wrong. According to Droid Life, wiping the new hub's application data in settings should coax the update out instantly. And you'd think the two would talk about these things.

Android browser becomes most popular mobile web browser besides the one on iOS

The built-in Android web browser has become the most popular mobile web browser, according to StatCounter. Android’s browser overcame Research in Motion’s BlackBerry browser in March 2011 to capture fourth place. Since then, the browser has grown at a rapid rate, passing Nokia, Apple and Opera’s mobile web browsers. In February 2012, Android had a 22.67% market share, beating out Opera’s 21.7% share for the first time ever. Adobe has said that it would no longer offer new versions of its Flash Player for new Android builds. On the other hand, the software firm did say that it would support the current version of the software with security updates and bug fixes.
