Dell to re-enter tablet market later this year
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsDell
After failing to catch on in the smartphone business, Dell is turning its gaze toward the tablet market. According to a report by Reuters, Dell will soon announce that it is going to produce a consumer oriented tablet later this year, The company says that it now understands not only the hardware involved in producing a tablet, but also gets how consumers care about the products "ecosystem".
While Dell tried to make a name for itself in the smartphone business with Android powered handsets, it ended up failing which prompted Michael Dell to say that the OS had not developed to expectations. The company did try its hand at producing a tablet with the enterprise focused Dell Streak 7. While ...

Dell Streak 5 updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsDellGoogleMini 5Android 2.3
The Dell Streak 5, Dell's original smartphone/tablet hybrid, may be discontinued, but the company is doing good to support its customers, as it has just released the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the 5-inch devices. We will excuse the tardiness of the update since the Streak 5 is dead product. The update offers version 1.5.1 of Dell's Stage UI interface and version 2.27 of the Swype keyboard. Owners can head to Dell's website to download the update now.

Official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update is now available for the Dell Streak 5
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsDellGoogleAndroid 2.3Streak
Remember when the Dell Streak 5 brought big in a literally big way – with its still perceived to be monstrous sized 5” display? Yes, it has been long discontinued in the US, but nevertheless, it’s getting one snazzy update that no doubt brings some surprise.
Specifically, the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the original Streak is now available and ready for the taking, thanks to the team over at xda-developers. With the sizable 155MB update, users are required though to have version 350 of the stock recovery installed on the device prior to installation. Once that’s all squared away, you’ll have your Dell Stream 5 transformed completely to an almost new device with Gingerbread.

Dell Quietly Exits Netbook Market
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDell
Dell entered the netbook market with the Inspiron Mini 9 a little over three years ago, at a time when these small form-factor mobile computers were a hot commodity. Entering the netbook market wasn’t so much a choice as a a necessity back then. But with the halcyon days of netbooks now well behind us, that’s no longer the case. In fact, things have changed so much that Dell has decided to exit the netbook market.
A visit to Dell’s website reveals that the company is no longer selling any of its Inspiron Mini netbooks. Dell had already discontinued the Inspiron Mini 9, Mini 10v, and the Mini 12, and the Mini 10 was the only one that remained. Now that the Mini 10 too has been discontinued, ...

Dell's last U.S. Android tablet vanishes, company insists it is still interested in Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsDellGoogleAndroid
Dell has discontinued offering the Streak 7 Android tablet in the U.S. The Streak 7 was Dell's sole remaining Android tablet to be available in the U.S., but the company insists that it is still very much interested in Android - for the global market, at least.
In the U.S., the Streak 7 was available from T-Mobile with HSPA+ 3G connectivity options. To say that it was a slow seller would be an understatement, but neither company has actually released specific sales figures for it. Before the Streak 7, Dell offered the Streak 5, a smaller 5-inch tablet that was fraught with software issues and a high price tag. The Streak 7 was the last Android tablet to be sold by Dell in the U.S.

Dell Streak 7 Android tablet discontinued
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsDellStreak 7
Like the Streak 5 before it, Dell has discontinued the Streak 7 tablet from its online store. The T-Mobile variant was similarly removed from the carrier's store earlier this year after being ignominiously denied a Honeycomb update, with a tiny moment back in the spotlight during T-Mobile's "Magenta Saturday sale."
Dell's site simply says that "Steak 7 is no longer available online, but you can browse our other mobile devices for similar products." The company's mobile products selection is actually looking pretty thin these days, with the Inspiron Duo holding down tablet duties and the Venue and Venue Pro smartphones still available. That leaves a pretty large hole for an Android tablet to ...

Dell posts misleading graphics card advice, apologizes and pulls it
Like UnlikeFiled in: Dell
Dell's efforts to entice prospective customers to upgrade their graphics cards have played a little too loose with the truth recently, which has been spotted by sharp-eyed members of Reddit. The company's "Help me choose" pop-up assistant on Optiplex machines featured the above image purporting to show a side-by-side comparison of how the Windows desktop looks on "standard" and "high-end" graphics cards. Needless to say, even the feeblest integrated GPU can successfully render a still desktop without the blur that Dell presents in its comparison, and the company has been alerted to its own misrepresentation by PC Pro.

Dell XPS 14z UK launch detailed
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksDellXPS 14z
It may not quite be an Ultrabook, but the Dell XPS 14z is definitely a svelte bit of kit and it's UK bound next month.
This 14-inch laptop will come with Intel’s 2nd generation Intel Core i5 or Core i7 processor, a 1366x768 resolution display and optional features including the choice of a 500GB, 640GB or 750GB hard drive along with an internal tray-load DVD combo for playing and recording DVDs/CDs.
Its big selling point is its skinnyness though: measuring 23mm and looking rather cool with an aluminium and magnesium alloy finish with a palmrest in dark grey.
There's Nvidia graphics on board with a GeForce GT 520M with 1GB card and there's 4GB dual channel DDR3 up to 8GB DDR3 1333Mhz memory o...

IP Firm Sues Over Core Products from Dell, Acer, Asus

In three separate filings, Round Rock Research claims that Acer, Gateway and Dell are violating eight of its patents, while Asus is infringing on nine.
All patents appear to have been acquired by Round Rock Research in a package deal from Micron on December 23, 2009. They affect inventions that were filed with the U.S. Patent Office between 1992 to 2005. The eight patents mentioned in the suit mainly refer to memory and storage technologies and include:

Dell 'very' in step with Windows 8, disappointed by Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftDellGoogleAndroidWindows 8
Dell's founder Michael Dell used his own Dell World conference as an unusual platform for talking down Android while putting faith in Windows 8. While he pledged loyalty to Microsoft and said the company was "very aligned" with it, he said Google's OS had "not developed to the expectations" Dell had. Steve Felice, president of the consumer division, tried to minimize the company's lack of success, claiming that the Streak tablets, Aero, and Venue phones were shipped in small numbers to "see customer reaction and behavior."
To support his view, the CEO went on to make the paradoxical claim that his company's primary business, hardware, wasn't important. Dell provides enterprise-grade service...
