Dell reaches for the cloud with new prototype ARM server

Dell on Tuesday announced a prototype low-power server with ARM processors, following a growing demand by Web companies for custom-built servers that can scale performance while reducing financial overhead on data centers.
The proof-of-concept server is code-named Copper and is the first one from Dell that is based on the ARM processor. Dell will not sell the server, but will install prototypes at specific locations so customers can kick the tires around ARM, whose processor designs are found in most smartphones and tablets today.

Dell Windows 8 tablet: 10.8-inch display, dual-core processor

After a number of failed attempts in the Android tablet market, Dell is looking to readdress the tablet space with Windows 8. According to a leaked document obtained by Neowin, Dell will launch a 10.8-inch tablet with 1,366 x 768-pixel resolution and a dual-core Atom processor later this year. The slate will also be equipped with a fingerprint reader, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, Intel graphics, 2GB of RAM and a massive 128GB solid-state drive. While Dell has previously promised a Windows 8 enterprise tablet "on the exact day" the new operating system debuts, we haven't heard any firm plans for its consumer offerings. Neowin has posted two separate images of what it claims are Dell's two Windows 8 tablets. The XPS 12 is said to be a convertible 12.5-inch tablet (similar to the company's Inspiron Duo) with an edge-to-edge Gorilla Glass display, due in late 2012.

Touchscreen laptops and tablets with the upcoming Windows 8 OS will be priced higher than their non-touchscreen counterparts, Dell's CEO said on Tuesday.
Dell will offer a full complement of Windows 8 products when Microsoft launches its new OS, CEO Michael Dell said during the company's quarterly earnings call. The touchscreen Windows 8 products will occupy higher price bands, which could mean higher profit margins for Dell, he said.

Dell has just announced four newly updated Precision tower workstations for business professionals with Intel's 32nm, eight-core Xeon E5-2600 processors. Other than the new chip, the towers get an externally-removable power supply that doesn't require any tools. It is lockable and has a built-in handle that lights up green when it's functioning properly.
The hard drives are also accessible from the front of the tower of the Precision T7600. It allows storing the drives in secure locations at the end of the day when needed. A report from PC World suggests Dell may kill its smartphone line. According to PC World, Dell’slast remaining phones, the Windows Phone-powered Venue and the Venue Pro, will no longer be sold in the US. A few remaining models will continue to be sold in India, China, Japan and South Korea.
An unamed Dell spokesman said that it’s time for Dell to get out of the smartphone business.” Mobility products have shorter life cycles than laptops and desktops,” he said.

A number of manufacturers have been tipped as Windows 8 tablet makers eyeing an October release date, including HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer and Asus.
The word comes by way of Digitimes and its supply chain contacts, who also finger Sony, Toshiba, Samsung, and Lenovo as working on Windows 8 tablets for an early 2013 launch.
Meanwhile Nokia, Microsoft's bestest bud and tablet wildcard, may release a 10-inch ARM-based Windows 8 tablet in November 2012 to complete the pack.

We told you they were coming, and now they're here: Dell's XPS 13 ultrabook received a new set of drivers today that improve the performance of the touchpad. While we'd argue that the single-button Cypress digitizer still isn't perfect — tap-to-click still has a noticeable delay — two-finger scrolling is now smooth and responsive and palm rejection is greatly improved. We weren't able to make the cursor jump a line when typing, although it did move a teensy bit. As we reported last week, the new 2.3.6.33 driver does have its quirks, such as making the touchpad take a moment to respond to input when it's not in use for a while, and for some reason pinch-to-zoom and two-finger rotation gesture...

Microsoft is rolling a hard six with their tablet strategy in Windows 8, and while it might be a hard sale with iPad crazy consumers, at least in the Enterprise they have a fighting chance. Seven people have been charged with trading shares of Dell stock based on inside information. Four new arrests were made by the FBI on Wednesday, Reuters said, while three others have already been charged. In total, the group made more than $62 million in profits off of illegal trades in 2008. The defendants named on Wednesday include former portfolio manager Todd Newman of Diamondback Capital Management in Stamford, Anthony Chiasson of Level Global Investors in New York and Jon Horvath. A fourth person was also arrested in Los Angeles.
