A flaw demonstrated in a YouTube video (seen below) demonstrates a difficult-to-access but reproducible bug in iOS 5.0.1 that can allow unauthorized users to bypass a lock screen on GSM-based iPhones and access recent contacts, make calls or even use FaceTime, iPhoneIslam reports. The hack revolves around trying to return a missed call while the sim card is taken out and re-inserted repeatedly (or in an area with no network coverage).

Apple to build new data center in Oregon

Apple confirmed on Tuesday that it plans to build a second data center in Prineville, Oregon. The Cupertino-based company will build the server farm on a 160-acre piece of land it purchased for $5.6 million, reports KTVZ News. “We purchased the land and it’s for a data center,” Apple spokeswoman Kristin Huguet said. The new facility will be very close to a data center Facebook opened last year. Microsoft's long-rumored Office for iPad got a much more tangible piece of evidence after a leak Tuesday purported to show the suite itself. As shown by The Daily, Office would be an all-encompassing single app with Excel, PowerPoint, and Word. The interface would recall OneNote but bring in more of the Metro interface language from Windows Phone and Windows 8.
It's not apparent if other apps would fill out Office, although Microsoft doesn't have as much of a need given the built-in e-mail app's Exchange sync support.

Chinese court orders ban on Apple's iPad

A lawyer representing Proview International on Monday announced that the Intermediate People’s Court in Huizhou, a city in southern China, ruled on Friday that distributors should stop selling iPads in China, Associated Press reports. Proview has claimed ownership of the “iPad” name in China and it says Apple is violating its trademark. “We bought Proview’s worldwide rights to the iPad trademark in 10 different countries several years ago. Apple on Friday quietly posted a Getting Started guide for new iOS developers. The overview is intended as a top-level look and goes with basics such as setting up Xcode, understanding what types of code are needed, and more abstract issues such as design guidelines and App Store submission.
An ending Next Steps section also links out to deeper tutorials, Objective-C techniques, and the full App Store guidelines.

OS X Mountain Lion to skip USB option due to lack of need

Apple stated Friday that the launch of OS X Mountain Lion would be truly download-only. The Mac maker briefed Pocket-lint that it wouldn't stock versions preloaded on USB drives like it has with the current Lion release. Offering a physical option was an "interesting test," but the Mac App Store was "just fine" in practice for getting a copy, Apple said.
Not mentioned was whether or not users could still create their own disk image and load that on a USB drive or a disc. The options were never official and will likely still be an option given that the Lion installer was ultimately a package with a typical install image inside.

Apple settles 'Antennagate' class action lawsuit: $15 or a bumper case for US iPhone 4 purchasers

A settlement in an "Antennagate" class action lawsuit that was filed against Apple in July of 2010 has finally received preliminary approval. The suit sought damages for owners of the original iPhone 4 in the wake of Antennagate, contending that "the case and antenna design has led to a substantial degradation in signal quality and dropped calls when the phone is used in a normal and foreseeable fashion by users." According to CNET, the settlement will mean one of two options for all iPhone 4 owners in the US: a $15 check or a free bumper case. It's not yet known if customers who had previously taken Apple up on its original free case offer will be eligible.

Developers cautiously convinced by Apple Gatekeeper

Apple began its Mountain Lion Gatekeeper charm-offensive with developers last week, it’s been revealed, though there remain concerns around whether non-Mac App Store apps will get the same advantages as those released through the official download store. Developers Panic have documented Apple’s outreach efforts, co-founder Cabel Sasser having been invited to a preview session with Mountain Lion earlier in February, where the Cupertino company was keen to reassure him that it has no plans to make the Mac App Store the only way to get apps in OS X.

Apple Messages beta includes high DPI art

Apple's Messages beta may have been a further clue as to Apple's possible plans for high-resolution Mac displays. Multiple images in the app package are designated "@2x," a new designation usually seen only in recent pre-release iOS code. Even the normally small chat tab icon for a contact is 82x82.
The sharper network would be included to account for larger resolutions where existing artwork would either scale poorly or be too small at its native density. It's doubtful the artwork is intended for existing Macs given that even the 17-inch MacBook Pro's 1920x1200 display hasn't prompted higher resolution artwork in the past.

Mountain Lion ditches older Macs

Apple Mountain Lion will force many Mac models into legacy status, with no support for the upcoming OS X refresh for numerous pre-2007 MacBooks, MacBook Pros and desktops. The minimum hardware requirements of Mountain Lion - which we previewed comprehensively yesterday - apparently count out multiple models using integrated Intel GPUs, so TUAW‘s developer source says. That means, if you have a pre-unibody MacBook or the original MacBook Air, there’s no Mountain Lion for you.
Those notebooks using Intel GMA 950 or Intel GMA X3100 GPUs are apparently out of luck, but the list also includes the 8-core Mac Pro from 2007 and the mid-2007 Mac mini. However, if you have one of the following models ...

Two new iPad 3 rumors sprang up over the weekend, rumors which we wish would stop already since we’ll know everything there is to know about the iPad 3 in less than a month.
