Apple Wants Europe to Set Essential Patent Licensing Terms
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple has requested that the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) set guidelines that determine how companies license patents that are considered "essential" for certain products, including smartphones. The request, which was submitted in November, notes that patents are not licensed in a consistent manner. "It is apparent that our industry suffers from a lack of consistent adherence to FRAND principles in the cellular standards arena," said Apple in a letter to ETSI. Apple wants the European body to devise a way for technology companies to set appropriate rates for essential patents used industry wide. Apple also believes that FRAND-based patents should not be used to enfo...

Apple's Vice President of iPhone and iPod engineering leaves
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
David Tupman, another Apple employee who not many people know about, has just left the company. His last title at Apple before resigning was “Vice President of iPhone and iPod engineering”, he has over 70 patents in his name, and he spent over a decade at what is now considered the world’s biggest smartphone vendor. Now people leave companies for various reasons, so we don’t want to suggest that he got bored of Apple or didn’t agree with the where the company was going with the iPhone, but unless this guy wanted a vacation … why would you leave Apple when the company is as hot as it is today? The folks at 9to5Mac did some investigating to figure out where David now works, and while they didn...

Siri now serves 25% of Wolfram Alpha's traffic, could it threaten Google?
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleGoogle
The Apple effect is well known in Asian countries where massive amounts of workers and factories could get hired virtually overnight to fulfil an order, but now almost the same effect has hit Wolfram Alpha. The knowledge engine that offers not simply search results, but aims to put them into context, now has 25% of its traffic coming from Siri queries.
Apple’s humble intelligent voice assistants is smart partly exactly because of Wolfram Alpha that will do funky things like calculate the distance to the moon as well as solve and graph mathematical problems.
“Siri accounts for about a quarter of the queries fielded by Wolfram Alpha, whose staff has grown to 200,” a New York Times report said.

Apple May Have to Stop Selling the iPad in China
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
After losing a trade mark lawsuit last year against a Chinese company, Apple may have to pay a fine and stop selling and marketing the iPad in China. An ironic outcome in the Counterfeit Republic of China, if it finally goes through.
Last year, Apple sued a company called Proview Technology Shenzhen. The latter said they had the rights to the iPad name in continental China, even while the company's Hong-Kong branch sold the name to Apple in 2009. Apple lost that lawsuit.

iPhone 4S A5 processor packs custom Siri “ears” chip
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Apple’s refusal to put its Siri voice control system on the iPhone 4 is not a shameless play to persuade users to upgrade to the 4S, it’s suggested, but a limitation of the Apple A5 chip found inside the newest iOS smartphone. The A5, Linley Group analyst Linley Gwennap says, was always too large simply to accommodate two Cortex A9 CPUs and a GPU, CNET reports; the extra bulk is to house an on-chip noise-reduction system sourced from specialists Audience, which revealed its deal with Apple last month.

IDC: Apple tops worldwide smartphone shipments in Q4 2011
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
In terms of shipments, Apple was the top smartphone vendor in the fourth quarter of 2011, according to a new IDC report. The company shipped roughly 37 million phones, giving it a 23.5 percent marketshare. Close behind was Samsung, which took a 22.8 percent share with 36 million phones. Nokia, Research in Motion, and HTC rounded out the top five, but trailing behind with shares of 12.4, 8.2, and 6.5 percent, respectively.
Apple is said to have set a shipment volume record for the entire industry, which the IDC argues is linked to a combination of pushing the iPhone 4S launch closer to the holiday season, and the introduction of new carriers, such as Sprint.
Samsung, though, narrowly edged o...

Motorola gets patent ruling against Apple's email services in Germany
Like UnlikeFiled in: AppleMotorola
The Mannheim Regional Court in Germany issued an injunction this morning against Apple, ruling that certain Apple email services infringed Motorola patent no. EP0847654. The ban is apparently focused on push email features available through Apple's iCloud and MobileMe services. However, unlike a separate ban Apple faced this morning relating to certain Apple 3G devices in Germany (which has now been temporarily suspended), the effect of this ruling will not be felt immediately. Namely, Motorola will have to expressly seek enforcement of the injunction, after posting a bond of 100 million euros. It's also very likely Apple will appeal this decision, which could further delay the administratio...

Why Siri Will Never Officially Appear on the iPhone 4
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4
Since the arrival of the iPhone 4S, users of the humble iPhone 4 have been hoping for a chance to get Siri. While they can unofficially, they never will from Apple.
The iPhone 4S uses Apple's A5 processor. Which you know is more powerful than the A4 built into the iPhone 4—but it also has some weighty audio processing hardware baked into it. Specifically, the A5 is home to Audience's "EarSmart" technology, which uses a digital signal processor to remove background noise and secondary voices so phone calls sound better.

Apple may partner with Verizon, AT&T and others for iTV content
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsAppleVerizon WirelessAT&T
Apple will launch its own HDTV called the “iTV,” analyst Peter Misek of Jefferies & Company said on Monday. We’ve written dozens of reports on Apple’s alleged upcoming HDTV, and most speculate that the device will run a version of iOS along with the company’s Siri voice engine that will remove the need for a traditional remote control. Misek also said that Apple is in talks to partner with carriers such as Verizon Wireless and AT&T for access to exclusive and non-exclusive content, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Best Buy recently leaked possible details on the iTV and the retailer’s survey suggested the device will have a 42-inch display and a $1,499 price tag. The TV could launch near the mi...

Google reportedly hires Apple exec for top secret project

Google has hired Apple’s former senior director of product integrity for a new secret project, according to a report from VentureBeat. The man in question is Simon Prakash, who worked at Apple for more than eight years. He will now reportedly be working in Google’s “X lab” on a secret project headed by Google co-founder Sergey Brin. It is speculated that the project could be hardware related, and it may tie in with the company’s pending acquisition of Motorola Mobility. Google and Apple are currently being investigated by the Department of Justice following accusations that th...

WebOS will have 'huge advantages' over iOS and Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHPAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 5webOS 3.0
Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman says the company's soon-to-be open source WebOS software will eventually be better than both the Android and iOS platforms.
HP will launch the first version of the reimagined operating system in September this year after deciding to commit the storied software to the open source community.
Whitman said the result will prove to be superior to the 'closed' Apple iOS ecosystem and the undeniably 'fragmented' Android platform.
She also confirmed that the company will re-enter the tablet market, following the HP TouchPad debacle of 2011.
An open and closed case
In an interview with CRN, she said: "There is a clear vision of what we're trying to accomplish.

Apple's iTV launch reportedly hampered by display availability
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsApple
Apple has been widely rumored to be readying a Siri-enabled television for release this year, but a new report claims component availability issues will prevent the highly anticipated “iTV” from launching in the first half. Citing unnamed sources within Apple’s supply chain, DigiTimes on Friday reports that Sharp, rumored to have been contracted to supply display panels for Apple’s debut HDTV, is not yet ready to ship the indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) panels Apple will use in its iTV. According to the site’s sources, upcoming HDTV models from Samsung and LG will occupy much of the OLED panel capacity during the first half, so Apple has chosen to instead utilize IGZO panels. Sharp is repor...

iOS apps crash more than Android apps, study shows
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleAndroidiOS 4iOS 5
Apps running on Apple’s iOS devices crash more frequently than Android apps according to a new study preformed by mobile app monitoring company Crittercism. The data, which was collected between December 1st and 15th last year, spans 23 different versions of iOS and 33 different Android versions. The latest version of iOS (5.0.1) leads all others with 28.64% of all crashes, Forbes reports. The OS build is still relatively new, however, so much of the poor performance could be attributed to apps that haven’t yet been properly updated. Even still, there are older version of iOS that have surprisingly high percentages — iOS 4.2.1 was responsible for 12.64% of crashes, iOS 4.3.3 had 10.66% and i...

Lunch hours may never feel safe again. That is, if you have a Mac running Lion / FileVault 2, like leaving your computer around, or have unscrupulous colleagues. Using live-memory analysis over firewire, the encryption key can be accessed from FileVault's partition, gifting the pilferer privy access to keychain files and login data -- and therefore pretty much everything else. If you want to try this out for yourself, conveniently, Passware will sell you the software ($995 for a single u...

The next generation of the Apple iPad could arrive in stores late March, nearly a year after the launch of the iPad 2, if we are to believe a report by Japanese blog Macotakara that says Apple will hold a media event in the beginning of March. The event is expected to bring us an official announcement of the third iPad.
Manufacturers such as Foxconn and Pegatron have allegedly started production of the new tablet. Foxconn is responsible for an overwhelming 85% of all future iPads made:
“According to Chinese source, Foxconn Technology and Pegatron Technology started next generation of iPad assembly with Foxconn bearing 85% and Pegatron taking 15% of the production load like as iPhone 4S. Acce...
