Rumors: iPad 3 thicker, four-inch iPhone 5, new MacBook Pro

An as yet unconfirmed rumor has outlined minor but significant details of Apple's 2012 roadmap. The tip to iLounge had the iPad 3's dual LED backlight leading to a rare increase in an Apple's device thickness, by 0.7mm (0.03in). The thickness would still keep it thinner than the original iPad but would show a sacrifice to get the rumored 2048x1536 display, whose density would reduce the amount of outbound light without the extra LED.

As expected, it would ship in March, and might be introduced in January "depending on conditions," the source said.

The claim also described a fifth-generation iPhone unlike either the since disproven design or the iPhone 4S. It would grow to a four-inch displ...

Apple is slowing down iPad 2 production, gearing up for the iPad 3

Apple is slowing down iPad 2 production, gearing up for the iPad 3

Apple is purportedly slowing down iPad 2 production with 9.7-inch display shipment orders decreasing in the fourth quarter. Samsung, LG Display and Chimei Innolux have all received less orders from Cupertino in the last trimester, according to a DigiTimes report.
The slowdown could be due to Apple already having a surplus which it can rely on and could also be related to the upcoming production of the next-generation iPad. Samsung and sharp have reportedly already started shipping displays for what's expected to be the iPad 3 in October. Wintek and TPK Holding making touch panels for the next iPad, are expected to start shipping them in the November-December timeframe.

Apple is preparing to launch a slightly upgraded iPad 2 in March of 2012, DigiTimes reported on Thursday. The new iPad is rumored to be thinner and is said to offer better battery life than the current model. It is unclear what Apple will call the device launching in March, but the company reportedly has plans to launch a “real” iPad 3 during the third quarter of 2012. Samsung, Sharp and LG are said to be working on a new Retina Display for the next-generation iPad, which may also pack a faster A6 processor, but rumors of manufacturing issues have suggested it may take Apple longer than originally planned to introduce a model with that equipment. A report last month from Ticonderoga Securiti...

Apple says Kindle Fire is actually good for them

Apple says Kindle Fire is actually good for them

Posted on Nov 04, 2011 by MG1

When the Amazon Kindle Fire was announced a couple of weeks ago carrying a price tag of only $200, for the first time we thought that the iPad really has gotten some competition.
The Kindle Fire is smaller at 7 inches, but offers a dual-core processor and a heavily modified Android that make it desirable.
Now, you might expect Apple to be challenged, but CFO Peter Oppenheimer actually said the Fire was good for the iPad. How come? Here's what Barclays published based on an interview with Oppenheimer:
“While the pricing at $199 looks disruptive for what seems to be the iPad’s most important rising challenge, the Amazon Fire – it is important to note that it could fuel further fragmentation ...

Samsung appeals Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction in Apple case

Samsung appeals Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1 injunction in Apple case

Posted on Oct 28, 2011 by MG1

Samsung has appealed a ruling by an Australian court that prevents it from selling the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the country in an effort to get the tablet on store shelves in time for the holidays. Samsung attorney Neil Young accused Justice Annabelle Bennett of making “irrelevant considerations” and “making errors of law in her approach” to the injunction. The request for an appeal hearing will be granted by Justice Lindsay Foster, likely for the week of November 21st, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Samsung and Apple are currently locked in a number of legal battles around the globe. Apple has successfully blocked Samsung’s local retailers in Australia and The Netherlands from sell...

Anyone with a Smart Cover Can Break into Your iPad 2

Anyone with a Smart Cover Can Break into Your iPad 2

In a pretty sizable and scary (and weird!) security bug, Apple's Smart Cover can be used to unlock any iPad 2, even if there's a passcode on it. Here's how it works. And here's how to fix it.
We've confirmed the security flaw with our own Smart Covers and iPad 2s running iOS 5 and it's just like the video above—the bug easily exposes your iPad 2 to unwanted eyes. And though you have to jump through a few hoops to get there, it works like this:

• Lock a passcode enabled iPad 2
• Hold down power button until it reaches the shutoff slider screen
• Close Smart Cover
• Open Smart Cover
• Click cancel

Apple may be building 7.85-inch 'iPad mini'

Apple may be building 7.85-inch 'iPad mini'

Posted on Oct 19, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: TabletsApple

Apple may be working on a smaller “iPad mini” tablet with a 7.85-inch display, according to a new report from United Daily News in Taiwan. Reportedly, LG Display and AU Optronics will supply the parts for the device, which will have the same 1024 x 768-pixel resolution as the iPad 2. Apple may want to enter the lower-priced tablet market in an effort to steal market share away from Amazon’s Kindle Fire device, but at least one analyst has argued the device may not be smaller in size than the current iPad. Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White recently suggested that Apple might introduce an “iPad mini” priced in the “high to mid-$200 range” during the first few months of 2012, and the d...

Production of Apple’s third-generation iPad is about to get underway according to Susquehanna Financial Group analyst Jeffrey Fidacaro. According to Fidacaro, Apple’s manufacturing partners have orders to build as many as 1 million iPad 3 tablets in the fourth quarter of this year, in line with an earlier note from the analyst’s colleague at Susquehanna, Christopher Caso. “Our checks indicate that iPad 3 has now shown up on AAPL’s production forecast for a late-4Q production start,” Caso wrote in a recent research note. “We believe 0.6 mln-1 mln units are forecasted for 4Q production.” Last week, Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White said that Apple will unveil a new entry-level “iPad m...

US judge denies Apple some bans, says Samsung is copying

US judge denies Apple some bans, says Samsung is copying

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Federal court Judge Lucy Koh on Thursday tentatively denied some of Apple's calls for a preliminary US ban on Samsung devices. She believed there wasn't enough of an urgent case to ban the hardware based on a "utility" patent but hadn't issued a definitive verdict on three design-related patents. Apple might have trouble proving the patents were violated, she said.

Koh also wasn't convinced Apple couldn't just recoup any lost damages at the trial itself.

In spite of the apparent relief, Koh made it clear she was likely to side with Apple in the long term. She believed Galaxy Tab models "do infringe" on patents relating to the iPad, even if Apple couldn't prove validity at this stage. In co...

Apple wins temporary ban of Samsung tablets in Australia

Apple wins temporary ban of Samsung tablets in Australia

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Apple has secured a temporary ban on the sale of Samsung tablets in Australia after launching legal action against the Korean company for allegedly copying the iPad too closely. In the federal court of New South Wales, Justice Annabelle Bennett granted the injunction, which prohibits the sale of Samsung's tablets until the lengthy patent battle between the two technology giants has been resolved.

"I am satisfied that it is appropriate to grant an interim injunction," Justice Bennett said, confirming that Apple had valid cause for legal action for the breach of its touchscreen technology patents. The dispute will now head towards a full hearing, although it is unlikely to take place until at...

Grand Theft Auto III headed to iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and Android

Grand Theft Auto III headed to iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and Android

Posted on Oct 14, 2011 by MG15

Grand Theft Auto III is a game us Pocket-linters remember with great affection. We have so many fantastic memories of tearing through one of the first ever truly open world games, wrecking every car in our path and generally smashing people to pieces.

Since then, the GTA series has continued to innovate. Chinatown Wars is one of the best gaming apps currently available on iOS, its top down open world adventuring being quite unlike anything else on smartphones or tablets. It never, however, quite achieved the levels of greatness that were possible in GTA III, leaving our iPhones and iPads free from the joys of decimating liberty city.

How You Can Get a Fresh iPad for $100

How You Can Get a Fresh iPad for $100

Posted on Oct 13, 2011 by MG1

I love my iPad. It's the original model, bought on April 3, 2010. It's been working perfectly since then but the battery life was really bad, lasting only a couple of hours lately. It was exhausted. I had to replace it.
In the process, I got a fresh iPad 64GB at the Apple Store for just $100. The good news, you can get one too.
After so many charging cycles, my original iPad's battery was exhausted. It took forever to recharge and only a few hours to completely run out. I remember the days when I first got it. I could use it normally for a couple of days, watching at least two Netflix movies on it or browsing the web, running some apps and reading comic books.
I went to the Apple Store to as...

97.2% of US tablet traffic is from the iPad

With an onslaught of Android tablets, a webOS tablet and the BlackBerry PlayBook, you might have thought the iPad is in danger. Wait until you see the share all these tablets got in August 2011 - 2.8% of all tablet traffic in the States. No typo here.
“In August 2011, iPads delivered 97.2 percent of all tablet traffic in the U.S. iPads have also begun to account for a higher share of Internet traffic than iPhones (46.8 percent vs. 42.6 percent of all iOS device traffic),” comScore’s latest report states.
It’s interesting to see which were the rest of the tablets accounting for a meagre 2.8% of all US tablet traffic, but in either case the facts are hard to ignore here.

Facebook Project Spartan and iPad Apps come next Week

Posted on Sep 29, 2011 by MG15

Facebook is supposed to launch a HTML5 platform for mobile devices dubbed Project Spartan. Many assumed Facebook would unveil it at the Facebook F8 conference last week, but that did not happen. Now TechCrunch reports, after some Spartan screens leaked, that Facebook is launching Project Spartan and iPad apps early next week.

According to reports Facebook and Apple are still discussing if Facebook is unveiling their iPad app on Tuesday in the Apple event or on Monday on their own. TechCrunch calls Apple and Facebook "Frenemies.", which hits it on the head. Apple has already let Twitter into their world. They need to actually do the same with Facebook unless Apple is doing their own social n...
