Google has released an update for its Translate app for the iOS platform that brings support for the larger display of the Apple iPad. All of the features that users have come to enjoy on the iPhone and iPod touch can now be had on the iPad, including text translation between 63 languages, voice-to-text translation in 17 languages, and text-to-voice translation in 24 languages. The updated Google Translate app can be downloaded for free from the iTunes App Store now.

Man enters the US using iPad as passport

A Canadian man successfully gained entry into the United States using a scanned image of his passport on his iPad.
Matt Reisch, from Montreal, realised he'd forgotten his ID as he approached the US border while driving to deliver Christmas presents to Vermont.
However, the quick-thinking Canuck realised he had scanned the important pages and sent the image to his iPad in-case he lost the passport while travelling.

It’s been a long wait for iPhone 4S owners and an even longer wait for iPad 2 owners who want to jailbreak their devices. Released right after Christmas, the latest jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 only works for A4 devices like the original iPad and the iPhone 4. Both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S are equipped with the A5 chip and can’t be jailbroken, yet.
pod2g has been working on the iOS 5 jailbreak for the past few months. He plowed through the 5.0.1 jailbreak and may have a breakthrough that’ll finally lead to a public, untethered jailbreak for the A5 devices within the next week. His tweet is no guarantee the jailbreak will be released, but it sounds promising.

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

We all knew the App Store was the most profitable app catalog out there, but recent findings from Distimo show just how shockingly more cash it yields for developers. The top 200 apps in the App Store generate 6 times the profits of those in the Android Market. This makes it obvious why most programmers focus on iOS first and Android is usually only second-best.
The stats were all published by Distimo reporting about the January to November state of the application markets. Other interesting findings include the fact that Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace has outgrown the Nokia Ovi Store and the RIM BlackBerry App Worlds.

While fragmentation is a rare(r) problem on iOS there's still quite a few users rocking older versions on their devices. Unfortunately for them, ever since a recent update on the 16th they haven't been able to download any new apps from the App Store straight to their devices. While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. European Commission to investigate Apple, eBook publishers in antitrust probe

DisplaySearch: iPad 3 in Q1 to start tablet resolution surge

The iPad 3 display should help kick off a dramatic improvement in the quality of tablet displays early next year, DisplaySearch said. Based on its own shipment forecast data, it expected the typical pixels per inch (PPI) of a tablet to jump from 147 at the end of 2011 to 191 in early 2012. It understood that two tablet screens shipping in the fall would be instrumental to the spike, including a 1920x1200 10-inch display showing in the Iconia Tab A700 and the 9.7-inch, 2048x1536 screen that could only be destined for Apple's new tablet.

Microsoft rumored to be working on Office for iPad

The folks over at The Daily claim to have obtained information that Microsoft is planning on releasing a version of Office for the iPad. With Office being Microsoft’s second biggest seller, second only to Windows, and the iPad accounting for over 80 percent of the tablet market, it appears that an Office for iPad app would be a powerhouse release for Microsoft.
Since Apple has already established a $10 price point for its productivity iPad apps, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynote, The Daily is speculating that Microsoft will release around the same $10 mark in order to be competitive.

Last month, Apple won a preliminary injunction from an Australian court which in effect banned Samsung from selling its flagship tablet, the Samsung GALAXY Tab 10.1, in the country. Apple had alleged that the Korean based manufacturer infringed upon its patents and the court initially agreed. Hoping to somehow salvage the holiday season, Samsung quickly appealed the ruling with the company's lawyer Neil Young (who does not have a "Heart of Gold") saying that the tablet was dead if it could not be offered for the holiday season.

The device is listed alongside familiar codenames for other Apple devices such as the iPhone 4. As you may recall from earlier this week, Samsung has started selling a slightly modified version of its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet in Germany to satisfy a recent court ruling, which deemed the original model a little too Apple-like in some respects. Just how modified is the new 10.1N model? Well, you can thank NewGadgets.de for our first real look at it. As expected, the changes are all found around the edges of the device, including a more pronounced metal lip that creeps further across the bezel, some repositioned speakers, and... that's about it, really.
