HTC undecided about Ice Cream Sandwich update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
TechRadar has spoken to HTC about the new Android 4.0 release to see when the firm will be updating its phones to the next level of Google's OS.
We expected the Taiwanese firm to be talking up all the new functionality Ice Cream Sandwich will offer, but it's remained strangely non-committal about the new software:
"We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our upgrade plans," said a spokesperson.
"Our goal for Android updates is to give every customer an improved user experience, which means balancing each phone's unique hardware, HTC Sense experience and the Android kernel."

HTC responds to Android 4.0, may pass on upgrades
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsHTCGoogleAndroid 4.0
HTC has issued an official response (embedded below) to the launch of Google’s Android 4.0 operating system. Although the launch centered on rival Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus hardware, which will also be first to market, HTC has acknowledged that its existing customers will be keen to get their hands on the new features announced by Google. However, the company has not offered any timeframe for when the operating system upgrades, which have traditionally taken months to arrive after Google has posted the source code for the OS.
HTC’s statement reads:
"We are excited about the latest update for Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, and are currently reviewing its features and functionality to determine our...

Ballmer blasts Android over usability
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftGoogleAndroid
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is known for his sweaty on stage antics and for his comments about competitors’ products. Ballmer is back at it again and is blasting Android on usability and saying that consumers need to be a computer scientists to figure out how to use an Android phone. The off the wall comments by Ballmer came from the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco when the Microsoft CEO was asked to compare the appeal of a Windows Phone to an Android phone.

Free Software Foundation: Windows 8 secure boot requirement could lock out Linux
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
The Free Software Foundation (FSF) has launched a campaign claiming that Windows 8-certified PCs might prevent users from booting into Linux. The mandatory "secure boot" facility in the systems' Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) might better be called "restricted boot," the organization claims.
Microsoft cheered Windows users in September when it demonstrated the upcoming Windows 8 operating system booting in eight seconds. Part of the technology behind the fast boots, however, could enable Microsoft and its PC vendor partners to block users from loading Linux on a Windows 8 PC, Matthew Garrett, a mobile Linux developer at Red Hat, wrote in a Sept. 20 blog post.

Adobe Reader finally arrives to iOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleiOS 5
Looking for a PDF reader on iOS? There’s plenty of options in the App Store, but for some reason up until now Adobe didn’t have an official application for reading PDF files. Now, that changes as Adobe Reader app makes its debut on the App Store with the unbeatable price tag of free.
The neat thing about Adobe Reader is that allows you to open documents from any app supporting that like mobile Safari or the Mail application, which is pretty convenient. It will also open password-protected documents as well as display annotations and drawing markups.
Except for that the interface is stripped down to a bare minimum, allowing you to concentrate on the reading experience, which is the focus of A...

HTC has decided on a theme with the HTC Titan, and that is big. Monwindowsphone reports the HTC Titan is being advertised in Paris with a huge billboard covering the side of a building, comparing the HTC Titan with the Eiffel Tower and sporting the slogan – “See everything big.”
They are also advertising the HTC Radar in France on YouTube with the tagline “Keeping track of your conversations” referring to the Windows Phone 7.5 threads feature.

Windows Phone 7 Facebook app finally crosses 1 million monthly active users
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7
It has been a hard slog, and now, on the eve of the one year anniversary of the launch of Windows Phone 7, the Windows Phone 7 built-in Facebook app has finally crossed the 1 million active user mark.
Based on earlier estimates this translates into about 6 million Windows Phone 7 users in total, a number I am sure far below what Microsoft expected to sell over the last 12 months, but still a reasonable constituent.
By comparison the Facebook for iPhone app has around 90 million users, while the Facebook for Android app has has 67 million.
Hopefully with a new generation of devices and more committed partners in the next 12 months Windows Phone will also cross these milestones at a significan...

Half of Symbian users would consider a Windows Phone from Nokia
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftNOKIAWindows Phone 7
According to a poll taken by allaboutsymbian.com, a little less than half of the users of a Nokia Symbian device would consider purchasing a Windows Phone from the Finland based manufacturer.
Nokia’s global dominance has been on a steady decline over the last few years thanks to the substantial growth and popularity of their rivals. Realizing that Symbian might not be able to survive today’s market, Nokia has adopted Microsoft’s mobile platform in an attempt to compete.
Just a few weeks ago a leaked image surfaced of what is possible the Nokia Sea Ray, which many expect to me the manufacturer’s first Windows Phone powered handset. A combination of the young yet polished Windows Phone opera...

Google Voice pulled from App Store following iOS 5 crash
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsAppleGoogleiOS 5
What once was there now is gone. Earlier today, Google Voice was just two clicks away in the iOS App Store. Now, all that remains is a page cache (at the source link below) and versions of the app that were already installed on iPhones and iPod touches. Vincent Paquet, Senior Product Manager for Google Voice confirmed that the app had been pulled, explaining "our last update of this week had a bug that caused the app to crash at sign in. We removed it so it did not affect additional users until the fix gets published." We've been using the most recent version -- 1.3.0.1771 -- on an iPhone 4 running iOS 5 without issue, but recent reviews cite the reported crashing, so it's definitely affecti...

Google Translate for Android adds speech-to-speech translations in 14 languages
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google released an update today to its Google Translate app for Android that further knocks down language barriers. The Conversation Mode that was launched earlier this year allowed users to speak to the app and then have the app repeat what was said in the target language. However, this feature was only available for English and Spanish conversations. With this latest update, Google is expanding the speech-to-speech translation to 14 languages.

Samsung confirms Ice Cream Sandwich event on October 19
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSamsungGoogleAndroid 4.0
Just like we'd heard, we'll be getting our first taste of Ice Cream Sandwich next week, on October 19th to be precise. Of course we've already had a whiff of what it looks like in a video, and sampling the new Music and Google+ apps gave us another good look. But now we're set to see it for real, and if all goes well we might just get some new hardware out of the deal, too. Will this be the day the Nexus Prime makes us think that flat smartphones are... well... square? We'll be there live to let you know as it happens.

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLinuxUbuntu 11.10
Ubuntu 11.10 ("Oneiric Ocelot") was released, featuring makeovers for its Unity desktop and Ubuntu Software Center, plus a switch to the Thunderbird email client and a new backup tool called Deja Dup. On the server side, Ubuntu 11.10 adds ARM support, as well as a new "Juju" cloud management framework, and the integration of OpenStack within Ubuntu Cloud Infrastructure.
Most of the desktop and UI changes to the Ubuntu 11.10 ("Oneiric Ocelot") Linux distribution were revealed in the alpha and beta releases, the latter coming in September. However, a few new wrinkles have popped up, and there's also plenty of server news, including new cloud features and the first support for ARM-based server...

Siri features lacking for UK users: Disappointment due tomorrow
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsAppleiPhone 4siOS 5
Picking up your iPhone 4S tomorrow? We’ve got some Siri related sorrow to go with the mirth from earlier: we’ve learned that not only are navigation look-ups US-only, but local directory searches won’t work in the UK either.
One of the much-hyped features of the Siri voice assistant for iPhone 4S has been its ability to look up stuff around you. As iOS boss Scott Forstall demoed at Apple’s press conference earlier this month, you can ask it to find nearby restaurants, or even show you the way home.
That’s great, except new owners of the iPhone 4S are in for a shock. They will find that they can’t. As Stephen Fry touched on in his review for the Guardian, maps and direction Siri requests ar...
