The post, titled “Introducing the team,” was published on Microsoft’s recently inaugurated Building Windows 8 blog and revealed that the next-gen platform will indeed have an app store as well as possible Kinect integrations.

Microsoft starts Windows 8 blog, vows not to repeat Vista

Posted on Aug 16, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft geared up for the launch of Windows 8 with the start of an official blog on Monday to help developers. The first post by Windows president Steven Sinofsky recapped the shift to a more mobile focus for the OS but also addressed complaints about the lack of information beyond the first look. More info would come at the Build expo in September, he said, but Microsoft was also taking a cautious approach that only spoke about technology the company was ready to ship.
"We've certainly learned lessons over the years about the perils of talking about features before we have a solid understanding of our ability to execute," Sinofsky wrote. "Our intent with this pre-release blog is to make s...

Windows Phone 7.5 to freeze updates for WP7.0 apps

Windows Phone 7.5 to freeze updates for WP7.0 apps

Posted on Aug 16, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has admitted that the upcoming Windows Phone 7.5 update may cause a hiccup for many developers. As developers are beginning to submit applications for the major release, the company cautions that apps released for Windows Phone 7.0 devices will not be able to receive any further updates once a developer posts a v7.5 build.
"We realize that some of you may worry about this limitation, and so we’re actively working on ways to mitigate it," Microsoft's Todd Brix wrote in a blog post. "To improve the experience for users, it’s our preference not to have “duplicate versions” of your apps in the marketplace."
Although the issue may go unnoticed by the first wave of users to take advanta....

With launch of Mango Marketplace NoDo apps will be frozen

With launch of Mango Marketplace NoDo apps will be frozen

Posted on Aug 16, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has posted a blog post detailing what effect the roll-out of new Mango apps, which have features which are not compatible with Windows phone 7 NoDo, will have on Marketplace.
It appears once a developer updates an app for Mango, the NoDo version of their app will be held in frozen, available for users who are still on NoDo, but with the developer no longer being able to provide updates for that version of the app.
Only one entry will exist in Marketplace, which will need to be shared by both the NoDo and Mango version. Microsoft expects developers to provide detailed descriptions and screen shots specifying which features are Mango only. Even screen shots will have to be shared, w...

Low end Windows Phones should not mean low spec

Low end Windows Phones should not mean low spec

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 by MG3

There has been a lot of talk lately about the next wave of Windows Phone handsets taking aim at the mid and low end of the market to combat the proliferation of Android devices in that space. It is my hope that Microsoft will not be tempted to let OEMS build cheap lower spec phones just for that purpose. Instead, I think they should follow the Apple model and make the current generation phones be their low end and the next generation be their high end.

Report: Compal to start shipping Nokia’s first WP7 smartphones, 2 million in total

Report: Compal to start shipping Nokia’s first WP7 smartphones, 2 million in total

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 by MG3

According to Dan Nystedt, ex IDG news, Compal is to start shipments of their first batch of Windows Phone 7 smartphones for Nokia, expected to include the Nokia Sea Ray.
The shipments would be in time for the announcement and simultaneous release of the handset at Nokia World in London on October 26th, and will apparently total 2 million handsets in Q4 2011.
If Nokia does manage to sell all of those handsets it would mean a substantial bump in the number of Windows Phone 7 handsets sold in 2011, currently likely sitting around 5 million.
Nokia has said in 2012 volume shipments will start which will flood the market with a variety of handsets at a variety of price points.

Official Windows Phone Mango update leaks out

Official Windows Phone Mango update leaks out

Posted on Aug 15, 2011 by MG3

Let's face it, waiting for official releases is awful. We're constantly getting news, images and teasers on everything that's on the horizon, but the actual release date for this stuff is always farther away than we would like. We've been seeing info coming out for Windows Phone Mango for quite a while now, and just when we thought we might see the update pushed out early, it turns out September 1st is just a rumor, so we still don't know when the official update will roll out. Luckily for everyone, the dev community over at XDA loves to get their hands on things early and send it our way.

Windows Phone Mango to beat them all to the punch with a September 1st availability

Posted on Aug 12, 2011 by MG3

The Mango update to WP7, with its 500+ new features, is now supposed to land on September 1st, which means that we'll probably see the new handsets that will be rocking it in greater detail then. Apple's iOS 5 update will most likely be available in September too, and Google's Android Ice Cream Sandwich is allegedly pulled to October, in order to fight the competition sooner than planned.

Images and video of new Nokia Windows Phone handsets surface: leaked or faked?

Are those the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone handsets? Hard to tell, but the video and images below sent to MyNokiaBlog from a tipster claiming to be a Microsoft insider (even though using an OVI email account) look very polished and professionally done. Sure, the video below mashes together seemingly new content with old marketing stuff, including some old Microsoft Office Labs footage. But while those could be manipulated images (likely taken from the video below), hands down to the artist, who could well defend a thesis on faking pictures in Photoshop.

Posted on Aug 11, 2011 by MG3

Skype’s forthcoming Windows Phone app will integrate deeper than the Skype app for both the iPhone and Android devices. After its $8.5 billion acquisition by Microsoft is approved by European regulators (expected by the end of the year), the future Skype division of Microsoft has plans to make Skype functionality an integral component of the Windows Phone experience. Skype’s VP of products and marketing, Neil Stevens, says that Skype plans on creating a different kind of app, something that feels part of the phone

Windows Phone 7 to make iOS and Android look outdated says Nokia's president

Posted on Aug 11, 2011 by MG3

Nokia president and head of North American operations, Chris Weber (no, not the former NBA star) has laid down the gauntlet. In an interview yesterday, the Nokia executive said that Windows Phone 7 makes iOS and Android look outdated. Weber says the big difference between the platforms is that while iOS and Android are built around apps, Windows Phone 7 is built around a user's contacts making things easier and quicker with some functions requiring fewer steps.

Microsoft adding speech recognition tech to Windows 8, next generation products

Microsoft adding speech recognition tech to Windows 8, next generation products

Posted on Aug 11, 2011 by MG3

Microsoft’s internal Tellme team is working on implementing speech recognition software into the Redmond-based firm’s portfolio of software and hardware products. Microsoft will build the feature into its new Windows 8 operating system, its Bing search engine, Windows Phone, Kinect and Xbox, Azure and other products, ZDNET has learned. We already know Microsoft’s upcoming Windows Phone Mango release will offer voice-to-text and text-to-voice functionality, but Tellme senior director of sales and marketing Ilya Bukshteyn told ZDNET‘s Mary Jo Foley that the HTML 5 speech tag will allow Microsoft to develop Windows 8 applications that are “speech capable.”
