Google employees getting a bite of Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nexus S
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleNexus SAndroid 4.0
A few Google employees took to various social media outlets to brag about receiving an internal OTA update that puts Ice Cream Sandwich on the Nexus S. Apparently they must have taken their joy to the web a bit too early, because over the course of the day, most of the postings have been deleted.
It seems that Google is definitely dogfooding this update, which is when a company tests a product prior to releasing it to the public in order to correct glitches and bugs. Since it seems that official info is tight on this one, we’re left to speculate on how soon we could see Ice Cream Sandwich available to everyone on the Nexus S.

AT&T's LG Nitro HD goes up for sale, LTE-enabled Gingerbread pep for $250
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsLGAT&TGoogleAndroid 2.3Nitro HD
In case you forget that AT&T's latest LTE-equipped smartphone hit shelves today, consider this a friendly reminder from your mobile obsessed friends here at Engadget. We're talking about the LG's Nitro HD, the 4.5-inch device we lovingly handled last week -- loaded with a skinned version of Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread, running atop its peppy 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8060 dual-core processor. If you'll recall, it's notably packing a 1280 x 720p screen resolution with an ultra-crisp looking 329ppi, an 8 megapixel rear camera (1.3 MP up front) and a healthy 4GB of internal storage supplemented by an included 16GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB). Thankfully, bloatware on the Nitro is at an all time lo...

Some Android phones fail to enforce permissions, exposed to unauthorized app access
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Eight Android phones, including the Motorola Droid X and Samsung Epic 4G, were found to house major permission flaws according to a research team at North Carolina State University. Their study revealed untrusted applications could send SMS messages, record conversations and execute other potentially malicious actions without user consent. Eleven of the thirteen areas analyzed (includes geo-location and access to address books) showed privileges were exposed by pre-loaded applications. Interestingly, Nexus devices were less vulnerable, suggesting that the other phone manufacturers may have failed to properly implement Android's security permissions model. Google and Motorola confirm the pres...

Verizon's Galaxy Nexus updated to Android 4.1.0, finally ready to dance?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsSamsungVerizon WirelessGoogleGALAXY NexusAndroid 4.0
A lucky human known as "Bradgog" posted the above screenshot to a thread on My Droid World last night, ostensibly heralding the arrival of Android 4.1 on Verizon's Samsung Galaxy Nexus. As you can see in the image (purportedly taken on Verizon's 3G network), the firmware update appears to bring a new baseband radio to the handset, which, in turn, may explain the delay in bringing the device to Big Red's stable. It's hard to say for sure, though we should have a clearer idea any day now.

Android app can detect Carrier IQ on your phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Carrier IQ is the new hotness when it comes to creepy tactics to get a hold of user data, but there is a new app for Android phones which will let you know whether or not the software is running on your device.
The app is courtesy of François Simond, a.k.a Supercurio, who put it together in just four hours. Unfortunately, the app will currently only detect whether or not Carrier IQ is on your device, but can't do anything about it. Of course, being the good samaritan that he is, Simond has put the code for the app on Github, so other developers will surely expand on his work. Simond also warns that anti-Carrier IQ fixes are not detected and can lead to false positives, but these issues sho...

Gingerbread now on more than half of Android devices
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 2.3
Android Froyo was dethroned as the most popular Android version recently and Gingerbread-running handsets became more and more popular. They now account for more than a half of all Androids out there. Gingerbread versions from 2.3.3 and higher are the most common ones and this is good news for those fearing fragmentation on Android.
Froyo now accounts for just above a third of all Android devices, and the third most popular version is Android 2.1 Eclair with 9.6% but on the way out.
Donut and Cupcakce by now are almost extinct with shares of 1.3% and 0.8%, but as rare as they are, they are still comparable to the tiny share of Honeycomb tablets which stood at a mere 2.4% of all devices runn...

Ice Cream Sandwich has a hidden "Rocket Launcher"
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
In case you've ever dreamed of flying through the cosmos with app icons zipping past you, you're in luck because for some reason or another Google has another Easter Egg hidden within Ice Cream Sandwich for you. This is of course in addition to the uber-weird homage to the nyan cat meme that Google also built into ICS, but at least this one is somewhat useful.
This Easter Egg, which is called "Rocket Launcher", is a little bit trickier to find than NyanDroid. For this one, you'll need to install LauncherPro (one of the better launcher replacements anyway), which will let you access Activity Shortcuts. When placing the Activity Shortcut, just choose the Rocket Launcher option from the menu, ...

Motorola Milestone 2 Gingerbread update starts rolling out today across Europe
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsMotorolaGoogleMILESTONE 2Android 2.3
Motorola has started rolling out Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its Milestone 2 smartphone in Europe. That, however, doesn’t mean you can get it right away; the new software will be released in stages so even if you can’t download it right now, check back again within few days.
The American handset maker turned to Facebook to spread the good news and we really applaud them for supporting their existing customers. Sure enough, they’re kinda late – but better late than never.

Android 4.0 source code for x86 processors opening up to developers
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid 4.0
For all of the Android developers out there, Google’s Android development team has opened up Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0.1) for x86 processors for both Intel and AMD systems. Take note that the release isn’t yet completely stable, there being some compatibility issues with Intel processors for sound, hardware acceleration, camera, and ethernet. On the flip side, Ice Cream Sandwich compatibility seems to be working just fine with AMD processors, Wi-Fi, sound, and hardware acceleration for AMD chipsets all good to go.

TomTom Places comes to Android
Like UnlikeFiled in: GPSOperating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Good news for Android users in Europe — TomTom has released its Places app to the Market, allowing users to search for restaurants, hotels, tourist attractions, shops and more, and then get directions to these destinations within the same software. The iOS version of Places is available in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Norway, Portugal and Sweden, and the Market release brings TomTom’s "10 million place" POI database to Android owners in the same countries, with Spain to come in September. Places relies on local business listing services such as Truvo, Gelbe Seiten and Páginas Amarelas, hopefully delivering better search results than services like Google Places or Yelp...

Time Warner's Android app manages your DVR, but doesn't stream live TV
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Time Warner Cable has made good on its promise to Android users — an app optimized for Honeycomb tablets is now available in the Android Market. While this app does offer a program guide and on-the-go DVR management, it is missing a major feature: there's no live TV streaming, unlike Time Warner's iPad app. Time Warner admitted this would be missing when it announced the app a few weeks ago, but it's still a letdown considering iPad owners have been able to stream live TV since March. As for when Android users might get this feature, Time Warner only says it will come sometime after Ice Cream Sandwich lands on tablets, which Time Warner seems to think will happen in the first few months of 2...

Box gives LG Android users 50 GB of free storage
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsLGGoogleAndroid
If you have an LG Android smartphone, I suggest you download the Box app and sign up for a free account because LG and Box have teamed up to give users 50 GB of free cloud storage for life.
If you’re not familiar with Box, it provides a cloud storage solution that will let you share documents, music, media and files across multiple devices. It’s similar to Dropbox but Box is more focused on the enterprise side of things and it offers more robust business capabilities though.
It has done a similar free 50 GB move with webOS and iOS and I wondered why it would be running these promotions which wind up hitting consumers.

3D Mark is coming to Android phones near you in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Futuremark, father of 3DMark and PCMark, has begun work on an Android edition of its benchmarking software. Wittily titled 3DMark for Android, it'll bring the industry-standard testing tools to all the phones in Google's yard. When finished, users will be able to measure performance by pushing the phone's CPU, rendering, openGL and physics engines to the limits. Results will be comparable against the company's newest software, including the forthcoming Windows 8 build. It's inviting handset makers to join a benchmark development program, an exclusive club that already has AMD, NVIDIA, Intel, Imagination Technologies, Dell and HP on the guest list, you can see the full PR after the break -- j...

Vulnerabilities in pre-installed Android apps can leak your info
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
We’ve never really liked preinstalled apps on Android phones but now that North Carolina State University researchers have revealed a major flaw in some on-board Android apps, we hate it even more.
The researchers said these vulnerabilities can allow for the sharing of your potentially sensitive information without your permission. Malicious apps could tap into the functionality of pre-installed apps to send text messages or even completely erase all the contents of the handset. Either way, anything being done on your phone without permission should be an issue of serious concern.
