Over 700,000 Android devices are being activated every day

Andy Rubin (pictured above, left), the father of Google’s mobile operating system, just posted this status update on his Google+ account: “There are now over 700,000 Android devices activated every day.” At first glance it comes off as a hugely impressive number, that’s almost 5 million devices per week, but according to our estimates Android growth is slowing down. Back in May Google was saying they were activating over 400,000 devices per day. In June that number was raised to over 500,000 per day, but more importantly Andy Rubin, via Twitter, said that the activation rate was increasing at a rate of 4.4% week over week. Okay, Windows Phone handsets may not be perfect when it comes to malware and exploits, but they are definitely safer than their Android counterparts, don't you think? Well, we now know of at least one person in the world who would disagree with that statement, and the disturbing part is that their job expects them to be much more knowledgeable on the matter.
What you see below is an excerpt from a conversation between an Orange service representative and a subscriber. In a nutshell, the unsuspecting user is being misled into believing that Windows Phone devices are prone to getting viruses, while Android smartphones are more or less immune to such problems.

ITC bans U.S. import of multiple HTC devices in Apple patent ruling

A judge with the United States International Trade Commission (ITC) ruled Monday that HTC is guilty of infringing Apple’s patents in several devices. The ITC also ordered a ban on the import of several of HTC’s smartphones although it is unclear which models are affected. Motorola Xoom receives early Android 4.0.3 build as Google adds source code to AOSP

Since Android 4.0.3 is the "base version" for Ice Cream Sandwich, Google has added the source code for it to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The build supports two devices — we've already seen the update roll out for the Nexus S, but the other is a device that was also launched in direct partnership with Google: the Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi). True to form, the enterprising hackers at XDA-Developers have already compiled it into a bootable ROM for the Motorola Xoom.
The build is certainly not for the faint of heart: the camera doesn't work and there are likely plenty of other bugs, and as an AOSP-build it also doesn't include Google Apps. All that might be the bad news, but the good news ...

Back in May, the Samsung Galaxy Tab was updated to Gingerbread over in Italy. In the States, regional carrier U.S. Cellular is now updating the Samsung Galaxy Tab to Android 2.3.5. The 7 inch tablet launched with Froyo so users of the Galaxy Tab on the U.S. Cellular pipeline are going to feel as if they have a brand new device in their hand.
According to the changelog, the update brings VPN support, improved volume control when playing a video or watching a movie while using a headset. HTC Wildfire S gets Android 2.3.5 update along with Sense 2.1

Well what do you know – HTC released the Android 2.3.5 update for its low-end Wildfire S smartphone. Along with the latest version of Gingerbread, there’s also the new Sense software (version 2.1), which mimics some of the aspects of the Sense UI on the HTC Sensation. However, you shouldn’t expect all of the features since there’s not enough horse power under the Wildfire S’ hood. There is the new interactive lock screen as well as few other graphic changes and that’s about it.

Adobe Flash updated for Android 4.0

That certainly didn't take too long. The same day that the Galaxy Nexus (and therefore Ice Cream Sandwich) made its official debut in the US, Adobe updted the Flash player for compatibility with the new Android OS.
There had been some slight worry that Adobe wouldn't update Flash all that quickly and would leave Galaxy Nexus owners out of the loop, but those fears have been addressed. Today, Adobe released an update bringing Flash to version 11.1.112.60. The update really doesn't do anything except add ICS support, although Adobe does list a few known issues to be aware of, including:

This is one of the coolest stories we've come across in a while. Sony Ericsson is really taking the update to Android 4.0 seriously by releasing alpha builds for certain phones and even asking for community help in the process.
Sony Ericsson has released alpha builds of Android 4.0 for the Xperia Ray, Xperia Arc S, and Xperia Neo V handsets. This is well ahead of the scheduled release of the updates, but SE has a really cool plan here. While these ROMs are not intended for casual users or daily use, SE is pushing for users to use the xda forums to talk about the builds and help SE to build the ROMs better, and more quickly. Google's reportedly pulled 22 malicious apps after two security firms tipped them off that the malware was tricking users into sending SMS messages to premium-rate phone lines. Android.RuFraud poses as popular games like Angry Birds, Assassins Creed or Tetris and can affect users across Europe and Russia. Fortunately the apps are easily spotted and deleted, but were downloaded 14,000 times before being pulled -- so if you see anyone experiencing similar issues, you can let 'em know how to solve it.

Ice Cream Sandwich gets its HTML5 scorecard

Sencha has put together an HTML 5 scorecard for Ice Cream Sandwich using the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and has found that ICS is a huge step forward for Android, but still lags behind iOS just a bit in features. In testing ICS, Sencha used a variety of tests including: Acid3, SunSpider, Modernizr, Animator and Touch Kitchen Sink.
In most of the tests, ICS did extremely well, and represents a huge step forward compared to previous versions of Android.
