Google confirms no Flash in ICS until Adobe updates it

It shouldn't be much of a surprise, because apps often have to be updated to support the newest version of Android before they become available, but Google has confirmed that Flash is not currently supported in ICS.
Those of you in Europe may have already noticed, and theoretically we'll find out soon enough in the States, but Adobe Flash player is not currently supported in Ice Cream Sandwich, and is not available in the Android Market. Even worse, there is no way right now to load up the old version of Flash.

Android.com gets overhauled, now friendly to the user

Android's main web hub, Android.com, has received an overhaul from its previously developer-oriented version and now gets friendlier with the casual user by offering a neat new design with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich elements and tons of visuals allowing you to easily explore the platform. The launch of the overhauled website coincides with the roll out of the first device running on the platform, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but it also comes as a celebreation of 200 million activated Androids.
The website is now divided into three sections: “Discover Android”, “Get Apps” and “Develop Apps” with the first one offering a peek at the features of Android 4.0 you might not otherwise know about....

CyanogenMod 9 for Ice Cream Sandwich in the works

With Ice Cream Sandwich righting the wrongs of Honeycomb three days ago in terms of source code availability, possibilities for mods and custom versions are blossoming again. CyanogenMod 9 is now under development, with a loose arrival date of January expected. Version 8 had been reserved for Honeycomb, but has now been skipped over due to Google holding on to its source code. Cyanogen also states on Twitter that the Gingerbread-based build (7.2) will continue to receive attention while version 9 is put together. The Samsung Galaxy S2 will be getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, the company’s UK arm has confirmed this week via Twitter.
While it should come as no surprise – even six months on, the Samsung Galaxy S2 is still just about the most powerful phone on the market, and to ignore it would be a shock – it is reassuring to see Samsung publicly committing to it.
Ice Cream Sandwich, which launches on the Galaxy Nexus today, includes many new features, including face recognition unlock, improved voice commands and dictations, an overhauled UI and better multi-taking, with screenshots of each running app.

Google Voice for Android updated with group text support

Google updated its Google Voice client for Android smartphones on Tuesday with support for group texting. In addition, the client now supports the ability to prefetch voicemails so that you can listen to them when you’re outside data coverage. Google also says the app should now offer better notifications, although we didn’t notice any immediate difference in our preliminary tests. The update is free and is available in the Android Market now.

It seemed like only two weeks ago when Google decided to grace us with the presence of the official Gmail app for iOS. Well, that’s because it WAS two weeks ago when not only was the app made available, but approximately 11.7 minutes later, it was taken down by Google as it contained a crippling bug that would crash for users upon opening. Google has then fixed the bug, which was quite a doozy as the app took two weeks to be released again on the App Store, and is now available for your downloading pleasure.

Welcome to the club T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G users! You are finally able to use Gingerbread and all of the goodies that brings. We know that Ice Cream Sandwich is the new hotness, but it's always nice to get an update.
The update will not only bring your Galaxy S 4G up to Gingerbread, Android 2.3.6 to be exact. The update also brings a mysterious "Google Security Patch", whatever that means, as well as camera enhancements and WiFi enhancements.
The bad news is that this update will not be available OTA, so you'll have to dig up your USB cable, hook up your phone to your computer and use the Samsung Kies Mini software to update your phone.

Google announces 200 million Android devices activated, 550,000 every day

These days companies can’t just hold an event to launch a new product; they also like to brag about numbers. And at tonight’s Google Music event Google had some pretty impressive numbers to reveal. According to Big G more than 200 million Android devices have been activated to date. That number includes both phones and tablets, but given the state of Android tablet sales numbers we have to assume that 195 million or so are smartphones.

Android Global: South Korea Second Only To U.S. In App Downloads

Research firm research2guidance this morning published a report that offers key findings from an analysis of mobile app trends in the Android Market. The first point is perhaps not so surprising: Although we think of Android as having significant global reach as a mobile operating system, the U.S. remains (by far) the largest market for Android apps. According to the study, with over 3.49 billion total downloads as of September 2011 and with 50 percent of Android app downloads (to date) originating at home, the U.S. is dominating the Android app market.

In addition to outlining its plans in Dutch on Facebook, Sony Ericsson has clarified its stance on bringing Ice Cream Sandwich to the Xperia-toting masses on its blog today. As if you haven’t been obsessively reading up on the update already, I’ll go ahead and mention a few new features including flexible widgets, Roboto font, the ability to take screen shots, revamped notifications and facial unlock. Google Releases 'Ice Cream Sandwich' Source Code

Google on Monday finally released the source code for Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.
But on the Google Forums, Jean-Baptiste M. "JBQ" Queru, a software engineer on the Android Open-Source Project, warned that "this is a large push," so developers should expect that "it will take some time to complete".
"If you sync before it's done, you'll get an incomplete copy that you won't be able to use, so please wait for us to give the all-clear before you sync," Queru wrote.
The source code is Android 4.0.1, which is the version that will be released on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Remember that early Gingerbread ROM for the LG Optimus 3D? Sure, it was in a state too crude to be used on a daily basis, but it was good for one thing, namely spoiling the surprise by revealing what goodies the upcoming update is about to bring.
