Apple iPhone 4S users consume twice as much data as the iPhone 4

Apple iPhone 4S users consume twice as much data as the iPhone 4

Posted on Jan 06, 2012 by MG1

According to a study done by a company known as Arieso, users of the Apple iPhone 4S consume twice as much data as the Apple iPhone 4 which is more than likely the case thanks to the data hog known as Siri.
In addition to doubling up the data usage by the iPhone 4, the iPhone 4S is also surpassing data used by the Apple iPad. Arieso says that the spike in data usage is due to the increasing use of online based services such as the previously mentioned Siri. For the sake of comparison iPhone 4 users consumed 1.6x the amount of data as the iPhone 3G.

Apple iPhone 4S to launch in China and 21 more countries on January 13th

Posted on Jan 06, 2012 by MG1

Apple’s iPhone 4S is set to launch in China and 21 more markets on January 13th. The popular smartphone was previously rumored to be scheduled for release in the region on January 23rd, but Apple announced on Tuesday that the launch of its latest smartphone will occur 10 days sooner. “Customer response to our products in China has been off the charts,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement. “With the launch in China next week, iPhone 4S will be available in over 90 countries making this our fastest iPhone rollout ever.” China is seen as a key growth market for Apple’s mobile devices as well as its MacBook line of notebook computers. Apple announced in October that it sold more than 4 millio...

Verizon activated more iPhones than 4G LTE devices last quarter

Verizon activated more iPhones than 4G LTE devices last quarter

Posted on Jan 05, 2012 by MG1

Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo revealed that the carrier activated a record 4.2 million Apple iPhones during the holiday season. The largest carrier in the United States set another record, as the company turned on service for 2.2 million LTE devices in the fourth quarter.
Verizon barely missed its lofty goal of 11 million iPhones sold in 2011 by only a few thousand, ending the year with 10.7 million sold. This was the highest number of activations since the company first rolled out LTE in late 2010. The spike in activations would likely suggest the double data promotion Big Red ran for its LTE devices during the holidays was a major success. With the release of Motorola’s Droid Razr, the ...

Report: some iPhone 4S units may have audio issues on calls

Report: some iPhone 4S units may have audio issues on calls

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG3

The Apple Support Communities forum has begun seeing widespread reports of intermittent audio failure on calls using the iPhone 4S, an issue where recipient can hear the caller but he cannot hear them. The problem is not consistent but happens often enough to be a source of irritation with users. While some have found workarounds, there is no indication in current developer builds of iOS 5 that any fix is in the works in the near-term.

iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak may be coming soon

iPhone 4S and iPad 2 jailbreak may be coming soon

Posted on Jan 04, 2012 by MG1

It’s been a long wait for iPhone 4S owners and an even longer wait for iPad 2 owners who want to jailbreak their devices. Released right after Christmas, the latest jailbreak for iOS 5.0.1 only works for A4 devices like the original iPad and the iPhone 4. Both the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S are equipped with the A5 chip and can’t be jailbroken, yet.
pod2g has been working on the iOS 5 jailbreak for the past few months. He plowed through the 5.0.1 jailbreak and may have a breakthrough that’ll finally lead to a public, untethered jailbreak for the A5 devices within the next week. His tweet is no guarantee the jailbreak will be released, but it sounds promising.

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

App Store generates 6 times more profit than Android Market

Posted on Dec 21, 2011 by MG15

We all knew the App Store was the most profitable app catalog out there, but recent findings from Distimo show just how shockingly more cash it yields for developers. The top 200 apps in the App Store generate 6 times the profits of those in the Android Market. This makes it obvious why most programmers focus on iOS first and Android is usually only second-best.

The stats were all published by Distimo reporting about the January to November state of the application markets. Other interesting findings include the fact that Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace has outgrown the Nokia Ovi Store and the RIM BlackBerry App Worlds.

Trumstand iPhone dock uses a horn rather than electronics

Trumstand iPhone dock uses a horn rather than electronics

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

We talk about a lot of iPhone speaker docks around here, and generally, they are crammed with digital amps and other electronic whatnots. This iPhone stand is different because it is an acoustic stand with no electronics that uses a horn like some sort of demented trumpet to increase the sound from your iPhone. The device is called the Trumstand.

You slip your iPhone into the dock holder, and that s-curve tube picks up the music from the speaker on the bottom of your smartphone and shoots it through the bends until it comes out of the horn opening like an old crank record player. There are two versions of the Trumstand with one offering gold plating and the other in sterling silver.

iPhones, iPod Touches still on iOS 3.1.3 can't download new apps directly from the App Store

iPhones, iPod Touches still on iOS 3.1.3 can't download new apps directly from the App Store

Posted on Dec 20, 2011 by MG15

While fragmentation is a rare(r) problem on iOS there's still quite a few users rocking older versions on their devices. Unfortunately for them, ever since a recent update on the 16th they haven't been able to download any new apps from the App Store straight to their devices. While users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. We were able to confirm the issue on one of our own devices, while there's a pretty lengthy thread in Apple's support forum about the issue, but no official respo...

iPhone 4S jailbreak: Incredible Siri hack lets you shout settings

iPhone 4S jailbreak: Incredible Siri hack lets you shout settings

Posted on Dec 16, 2011 by MG1

We’ve seen some impressive Siri hacks already, but this one is the ultimate reason you’ll be wanting an iPhone 4S jailbreak in your life: you can now tell Siri to toggle settings, and even read out the battery life.
While iOS has a thriving app community, there’s no denying that the inability to quickly turn off settings from the homescreen is a fundamental flaw – by contrast many Android phones have these settings in the ever-present pull down notification tray.

iPhone 4S gets Chinese network permit as Android widens lead

iPhone 4S gets Chinese network permit as Android widens lead

Posted on Dec 12, 2011 by MG1

Chinese iPhone 4S buyers received good news Saturday after it was confirmed that Apple's device had received a Network Access Permit from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology earlier in the week. The clearance will give the HSPA version of the phone approval to run on China Unicom's network. Its version is identical to that available elsewhere save for its support of the China-specific WAPI standard in place of the usual Wi-Fi.
In a conversation with Sohu, China Unicom added that it hoped to have the iPhone 4S on sale before the end of 2011, even with just under three weeks left in the year. It anticipates a 16GB version costing 4,999 yuan off-contract, or a steep $789.

Samsung loses bid to block iPhone 4S sales in France

Samsung loses bid to block iPhone 4S sales in France

Posted on Dec 09, 2011 by MG1

A French court on Thursday decided against issuing an injunction that would have barred Apple from selling the iPhone 4S in France, Bloomberg reports. The decision was part of a patent infringement complaint recently filed against Apple by Samsung, but Judge Marie-Christine Courboulay denied Samsung’s request. “The disproportionate character of the ban sought by Samsung against Apple is clear,” Judge Courboulay said in today’s decision, ruling that Samsung must pay Apple €100,000 for legal fees. The claim will move forward to be tried as a standard patent suit. Samsung filed a suit in October seeking to block sales of Apple’s iPhones in France and Italy, alleging that Apple’s smartphones inf...

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Another day, another question to answer. This time one of our readers asked me whether the iPhone 4S sold by Verizon Wireless is any better than what two other big carriers (AT&T and Sprint) are offering.
The short answer is – NO! You’ll get the best experience with AT&T’s iPhone 4S because it’s the only one that supports simultaneous voice and data. While iPhone 4S sold by Sprint and Verizon Wireless rely on a CDMA network, AT&T’s version connects to a GSM one, which allows this capability [data and voice at the same time]. In real-life this means that you’ll still be getting push notifications from the web even when you’re in the middle of a call.

Verizon to benefit most from iPhone 4S: expected to add 1.2 million subscribers

Verizon to benefit most from iPhone 4S: expected to add 1.2 million subscribers

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Verizon is expected to be the carrier that reaps the most benefits out of the iPhone 4S stateside. A leaked memo by JP Morgan hints that Verizon Wireless will increase its subscriber count by 1.2 million in the fourth quarter, largely due to the iPhone 4S being available on the carrier since day 1 of its launch. AT&T, the carrier the iPhone originally launched on, is projected to only add 450,000 new subscribers, while Sprint is expected to boost its subscriber base by 250,000 in Q4 2011.
T-Mobile, in contrast, is the only one of the four major US carriers that doesn’t have the iPhone and the forecast is for its subscribers to decrease by 400,000.

Apple's request to block Samsung Galaxy tablet, phone sales in the US is denied

Apple's request to block Samsung Galaxy tablet, phone sales in the US is denied

Posted on Dec 05, 2011 by MG1

As the legal drama between Apple and Samsung drags on around the world, US District Court Judge has rejected Apple's request to block the sales of Galaxy devices. Reuters reports the ruling came out late Friday, with the judge deciding "It is not clear that an injunction on Samsung's accused devices would prevent Apple from being irreparably harmed,". This isn't the first rejection for the folks from Cupertino either, after a request to speed up the trial was also denied back in July. The case itself will of course go on, but this means you'll still be able to get your hands on those Galaxy Tabs, Galaxy S IIs, and the like in the meantime.
Update: While Apple has yet to comment on the ruling...

Apple: We Don’t Use Carrier IQ… In Most Of Our Products… Anymore

Apple: We Don’t Use Carrier IQ… In Most Of Our Products… Anymore

The tech world is up in arms this week about Carrier IQ, the mobile data logging software that comes pre-installed (and rather well hidden) on an increasingly huge number of handsets. It’s still entirely unclear as to what’s being logged and, more importantly, what (if anything) is being sent off the handset — but one thing’s for sure: people don’t like it.
As the controversy swells, companies are rushing to distance themselves from the matter. The latest ones looking to get on the right side of the air gap? Apple.
