Want to legally unlock your iPhone? E-mail Tim Cook!

Posted on Mar 22, 2012 by MG1

Okay, maybe this tactic won't work for everyone, and likelihood has it that the more people that try, the fewer will get their wish, but at the very least, CEO Tim Cook has reached out for one iPhone owner and forced AT&T to help the man unlock his device.
The story goes like this: a man and his family are deep into Apple products, owning various iPhones, iPads, iPods, and Macs. The man gets transferred to Canada for work. His wife had an iPhone 3Gs, and luckily her contract finished as they were moving to Canada. So, the man bought his wife an iPhone 4 upon moving to Canada, and took the 3Gs for himself as a personal option to his work phone (a BlackBerry), but it was locked to AT&T, so h.....

Apple iPhone 4 allegedly catches on fire while charging overnight

Posted on Mar 22, 2012 by MG1

In an incident which has never happened before in the States, a Colorado woman who wishes to remain anonymous is claiming that her Apple iPhone 4 caught fire while she was charging the phone overnight. She comes forward in an attempt to pressure Apple into to publicizing the issue so that owners of the model can be warned that the phone can be combustible.
The incident occurred on a recent trip east and the victim said she awoke in the early morning to find her year-old white Apple iPhone 4 making "sizzling" and "popping" noises. After an "immense crackling" which she described as being "not quite an explosion," she said a putrid smell filled the air while clouds of smoke came from the phone...

Apple scores a victory over Motorola in German patent case

Apple scores a victory over Motorola in German patent case

Posted on Feb 28, 2012 by MG1

Apple on Monday won a ruling over Motorola Mobility in a German appeals court over a recent patent infringement suit, reports Bloomberg. The Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court ruled in Apple’s favor, stating that Motorola cannot further enforce its standard-essential patent injunction against the Cupertino-based company. The ruling allows Apple to continue to offer its products in its online store while it appeals a ruling that temporarily banned the company’s iPhone and iPad. “At the current state of the proceedings, it is to be assumed that Motorola Mobility would violate its duties under antitrust rules if it continues to ask Apple to stop the sales,” the court said in a statement.

Apple settles 'Antennagate' class action lawsuit: $15 or a bumper case for US iPhone 4 purchasers

Posted on Feb 20, 2012 by MG1

A settlement in an "Antennagate" class action lawsuit that was filed against Apple in July of 2010 has finally received preliminary approval. The suit sought damages for owners of the original iPhone 4 in the wake of Antennagate, contending that "the case and antenna design has led to a substantial degradation in signal quality and dropped calls when the phone is used in a normal and foreseeable fashion by users." According to CNET, the settlement will mean one of two options for all iPhone 4 owners in the US: a $15 check or a free bumper case. It's not yet known if customers who had previously taken Apple up on its original free case offer will be eligible.

Apple patent from 2010 tracks your eyes to give 3D illusion on screen

The short history of 3D on smartphones has not presented enough information to determine if there is a market for something that many consider to be a gimmick. 3D handsets in the States didn't blow everyone away and the 3D enabled LG Thrill 4G was named the phoneArena Best Budget Friendly smartphone of the year for 2011 which tells you that the price of the model continued to drop after launch. Of course, it is possible that the technology never goes any further than the filing considering that it was submitted in 2010 before the soft sales for the Nintendo 3DS, the LG Thrill 4G and the HTC EVO 3D showed that the public wasn't really interested in the third dimension on their mobile devices....

iPhone 4S A5 processor packs custom Siri “ears” chip

Apple’s refusal to put its Siri voice control system on the iPhone 4 is not a shameless play to persuade users to upgrade to the 4S, it’s suggested, but a limitation of the Apple A5 chip found inside the newest iOS smartphone. The A5, Linley Group analyst Linley Gwennap says, was always too large simply to accommodate two Cortex A9 CPUs and a GPU, CNET reports; the extra bulk is to house an on-chip noise-reduction system sourced from specialists Audience, which revealed its deal with Apple last month.

Why Siri Will Never Officially Appear on the iPhone 4

Posted on Feb 07, 2012 by MG1

Since the arrival of the iPhone 4S, users of the humble iPhone 4 have been hoping for a chance to get Siri. While they can unofficially, they never will from Apple.
The iPhone 4S uses Apple's A5 processor. Which you know is more powerful than the A4 built into the iPhone 4—but it also has some weighty audio processing hardware baked into it. Specifically, the A5 is home to Audience's "EarSmart" technology, which uses a digital signal processor to remove background noise and secondary voices so phone calls sound better.

Samsung Edges Apple to Take Top Spot in 2011 Smartphone Sales

Samsung Edges Apple to Take Top Spot in 2011 Smartphone Sales

Posted on Jan 30, 2012 by MG3

It's really a shame that the intense competition between Apple and Samsung is marred by lawsuits and counter-suits over patent portfolios, because at the end of the day, it'd be far more entertaining to see these two attack each in ad campaigns than to let their respective lawyers smack one another with legal mumbo jumbo. Even with the distractions of multiple lawsuits, it's turning out to be a pretty tight race.
