New iOS Hack Lets You Natively Tweet By Talking To Siri

New iOS Hack Lets You Natively Tweet By Talking To Siri

Posted on Jan 25, 2012 by MG3

There’s no shortage of novel things you can strongarm Siri into doing for you these days, but sometimes it’s the little things that get me excited.
While not as innately flashy as being able to start a car, a new (and currently nameless) tweak from developer InfectionFX does something that Siri should have been able to do from the beginning: tweet for you.

Whited00r lets you install iOS 5 look-alike on old-gen iPhones and iPod Touches

Whited00r lets you install iOS 5 look-alike on old-gen iPhones and iPod Touches

Posted on Jan 23, 2012 by MG1

If you're still rockin' an ancient iPhone or iPod Touch and are fed up with friends teasing you at every chance with their new-style multitasking and reminder features, we've got some good news for you. A new software, dubbed Whited00r, will let you install portions of iOS 5 on the first two generations of the iPod Touch, iPhone 3G and even your O.G. iPhone. Whited00r accomplishes this by simply acting as a custom firmware -- à la CyanogenMod 9 on Android handsets. There are, however, a few traits that devs haven't been able to mimic, which include core services like the App Store (though, you can install apps via iTunes on your home machine), Notification Center and iCloud. So, for those of...

Absinthe untethered A5 jailbreak tool for Apple iPhone 4S and iPad 2 made easy on both Windows and Mac

Posted on Jan 23, 2012 by MG1

Now that the Dev Team got around Apple's built-in A5 chip defenses, it released a software for untethered jailbreak of your iPhone 4S and iPad 2. The crew has made it a very simplified process, which rewards you with access to Cydia and all the goodies of jailbroken apps, that make the iPhone and iPad that much more functional.
The tool is called Absinthe (GreenPois0n, we get it), and offers one-click jailbreaking for both Mac, as well as Windows now. If you have been itching to do this, and get access to some of the cool things developers are doing with jailbroken Siri, get the respective Absinthe file for your OS from the source link, and check the instructional video below.

Whited00r brings latest iOS enhancements to the devices Apple left behind

Whited00r brings latest iOS enhancements to the devices Apple left behind

Posted on Jan 19, 2012 by MG3

Not everyone upgrades their handset on a regular basis, and if for whatever reason you've been saddled with the original iPhone or iPod touch for the last several years, you've had to watch as updated hardware revisions brought new iOS enhancements that were simply unavailable to your device. Whited00r, which cobbles together some of the standout features from iOS 4 and iOS 5 — multitasking, folders, background customization, etc. — in an unsanctioned package that seeks to inject new life into Apple's older products. Best of all, the custom firmware can be sideloaded from directly within iTunes without any sort of prior jailbreak.

Woz disses iPhone limitations, wishes it was like Android

Woz disses iPhone limitations, wishes it was like Android

Posted on Jan 18, 2012 by MG3

You’ll often hear from people that the iPhone is just better than Android because it’s more polished, beautiful and the app environment is better but the counter to that is that Android gives you more flexibility and power. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak still considers the iPhone the best but even he’ll admit that Google and its partners have surpassed Apple in many aspects.

Apple files German lawsuit against Samsung, targets Galaxy S II, nine other smartphones

Apple files German lawsuit against Samsung, targets Galaxy S II, nine other smartphones

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

With patent infringement accusations going every which way in recent months, we're certainly familiar with Apple/Samsung banter in the international arena. Now Apple has thrown yet another punch at the Korean smartphone maker, targeting its Galaxy S II, Galaxy S Plus and eight other handsets, claiming -- yes, you've got it -- patent infringement. The suit was filed in Dusseldorf Regional Court -- the same venue that the company used to target the Galaxy Tab 10.1N, which was created specifically to sidestep a September injunction, also in Germany. It's becoming rather difficult to keep track of all the IP hubbub across the pond, but we'll surely be back with more as soon as the German court h...

iPhone 4S jailbreak demonstrated on video

iPhone 4S jailbreak demonstrated on video

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Prolific iOS hacker pod2g posted a video of a jailbroken iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0.1 to his blog. The video showing a clean reboot without a USB connection to the computer — aka, "untethered" — was made by Chronic Dev Team member DHowett, an illustrious iOS developer in his own right. Pod2g says "only a few to wait now" which is a good sign that an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 is very near indeed, and about to join the untethered jailbreak released for A4 devices on December 27th.

Nissan creates the world's first self-healing iPhone case

Nissan creates the world's first self-healing iPhone case

Posted on Jan 17, 2012 by MG15

Although the concept of “self-healing” materials might sound like something out of a sci-fi movie, an iPhone 4S case with such properties already exists. And what might surprise you even more is that it is made by Nissan (yes, that Nissan). It is known as the Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case, and what gives it its magical properties is the same high-tech paint finish that the car manufacturer uses in some of its vehicles. The case, made out of ABS plastic, is covered with polyrotaxane-based paint, which helps it repair on its own and gives it a bit of extra grip too. According to Nissan, a small scratch will disappear in a matter of hours without the need for any user intervention. The comp...

iPhone 4S China launch turns violent after sales blocked

iPhone 4S China launch turns violent after sales blocked

Posted on Jan 14, 2012 by MG1

Apple is no stranger to hype and excitement at the launch of a new iPhone, but celebrations soured in China this week as the iPhone 4S launch was frozen after violence broke out around stores. Customers – along with scalpers looking to sell off the smartphone at a markup, and the gangs of migrant workers they had employed to fill the line and bypass Apple’s limit on how many handsets each person could buy – had queued overnight outside the flagship Beijing Apple store, but grew restless after it failed to open at 7am local time. An announcement that the iPhone 4S sale would not be going ahead and that would-be buyers should go home prompted abuse toward Apple retail staff, while the store it...

iPhone turns five today: a smartphone launch worth remembering

iPhone turns five today: a smartphone launch worth remembering

Posted on Jan 10, 2012 by MG1

It's been said that Apple has managed to "steal" every CES for the past five years, and without a doubt, it all started on January 9th, 2007. In a day that'll live on in Engadget lore as being one of the zaniest, most overwhelming 24 hours in our history, we can fondly recall shipping Ryan Block a few hours northwest from the halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center to the MacWorld Expo to cover what would go down as one of Apple's most memorable keynotes. What happened after that is evident to just about anyone who has even heard of a mobile phone, with Apple's singular smartphone (yes, the iPhone) going on to but pressure on the likes of Microsoft, RIM and even Google. In fact, we're wonde...

ActiveVideo Network's CloudTV H5 links up with Siri, brings voice control to set-top boxes

ActiveVideo Network's CloudTV H5 links up with Siri, brings voice control to set-top boxes

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

So you ignored the same old design and moderately bumped specs, plunked down your plastic and picked up an iPhone 4S -- presumably on the allure of Siri. Well, that bodiless, digital lady helper's about to work her concierge magic on your cable TV. ActiveVideo Networks plans to demo an implementation of its CloudTV H5 apps platform -- including iVOD, amongst others -- to bring voice navigation to living rooms via your set-top box. After routing a user's requests over a cellular network, the company's servers do the heavy lifting and deliver the intended content and search results all supposedly in the time it would take to use a remote control. We'll be sure to get some up close and personal...

iOS 5.1 beta hints at quad-cores for next-gen iPhone and iPad

iOS 5.1 beta hints at quad-cores for next-gen iPhone and iPad

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

Thanks to a reference code found inside the beta version of iOS 5.1 it appears as though the next generation versions of both the iPhone and the iPad could be replacing their dual-core processors with quad-cores.
It is believed that the core references Apple uses begins with the number 0 and therefore the single-core processors found in previous iOS devices were referred to as /cores/core.0.

iPhone 4S owners use twice as much data as those on iPhone 4

iPhone 4S owners use twice as much data as those on iPhone 4

iPhone 4S owners go through double the amount of mobile data as people on the iPhone 4, according to network firm Arieso. The obvious place to point the finger is Siri, as Bloomberg has done, with the voice recognition software being the biggest differentiator of the newer device. It was previously reported, however, that Siri didn't eat up all that much data, so we're not so sure. Arieso's research reveals that a tiny one percent of all users are responsible for half of all downloaded data, and we'd expect those people to also be among the earliest adopters of new hardware. Whatever the cause, it seems inevitable that carriers will continue to seek ways to cut down on burgeoning ...

Samsung's attempted iPhone 4S block in Italy denied, already missed its French connection

Posted on Jan 06, 2012 by MG3

Last October, Samsung made a new attack in its ongoing patent war with Apple, filing motions to block sales of the iPhone 4S in both France and Italy, alleging infringements of patents relating to WCDMA standards for 3G-enabled devices. About a month ago the French motion was denied and now we're learning that an Judge Marina Tavassi of the Italian Tribunale di Milano has said "negato" as well. What's next? We hear Brazil is lovely this time of year...

Siri Doubles The Data Use of iPhone Owners

Siri Doubles The Data Use of iPhone Owners

Posted on Jan 06, 2012 by MG3

Maybe you love Siri. Maybe you don't. Either way, you probably want to know that, if you rock an iPhone 4S, you're probably using twice the data of someone with a humble iPhone 4.
Bloomberg reports that the voice recognition software prompts users of the newer phone to use double the data of those stuck with its predecessor.
Admittedly, Siri hasn't been around all that long, so this could be a result of the software's novelty factor. Asking it if it's pro-life, using it to find hookers. You know, the usual. Or, it could be nothing to do with Siri — but there's little else to separate the two phones, so let's roll with the theory.
