LightSquared announces 'solution' for GPS issue, says LTE network will roll out on schedule

LightSquared may have steadfastly insisted otherwise, but recent tests showing that its wholesale 4G LTE network interferes with GPS have been getting tough for it to ignore, and it turns out the company has been quietly working on a backup plan. In addition to fessing up that one of the 10MHz blocks used by its network does indeed interfere with many GPS receivers, LightSquared has also now announced a two-fold "solution" to the problem. That will involve it using only a lower block of the 10MHz spectrum that it says doesn't interfere with GPS (with a few "limited" exceptions), and a new agreement with Inmarsat that LightSquared says will let it "accelerate the schedule" to begin using the ...

Skype said to be firing execs to reduce payouts

Skype said to be firing execs to reduce payouts

Posted on Jun 21, 2011 by MG1

Skype has started to fire several of its executives in an effort to reduce payouts from its Microsoft purchase, Bloomberg reported on Monday. Among the execs being let go are vice presidents Christopher Dean, David Gurle, don Albert, and Russ Shaw, as well as chief marketing officer Doug Bewsher, and the head of human resources, Anne Gillespi. Two other execs from Skype’s Qik acquisition earlier this year — Ramu Sunkara and Allyson Campa — were also fired according to the report. This could possibly mean that the executives will lose any stock options that were not yet vested. Microsoft announced on May 10th that it was acquiring Skype for $8.5 billion, and the deal is still pending FCC appr...

LG Revolution now just $99.99 at Wirefly

Posted on Jun 21, 2011 by MG1

It’s not every day we come across a brand new Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphone for under $100. In fact, the only other occasion we can recall is Amazon’s $99.99 HTC ThunderBolt sale from earlier this month. Starting immediately, however, Wirefly customers upgrading to a new Verizon smartphone or opening a new account can snag the the LG Revolution for the same great price — just $99.99. BGR reviewed the LG Revolution earlier this month and found it to be the most well-rounded LTE smartphone to date. While its display couldn’t match the DROID Charge’s Super AMOLED Plus screen and the UI couldn’t top the ThunderBolt’s Sense, the build trumps both those phones and the handset more than powerf...

According to a leaked ad in a new issue of CEPro:
One of the biggest trends to sweep through the consumer electronics industry is the adoption of software delivered through Apple’s iTunes App Store. For TiVo owners, the California-based company developed control and management apps for the iPad and (soon) the iPhone and Android OS products. Samsung vs Apple might be coming to an end

Samsung vs Apple might be coming to an end

Filed in: SamsungApple

Samsung and Apple have been going at it for quite some time now, making some pretty interesting legal claims that the other is stealing their technology, but rumor has it they might settle out of court. After Apple just settled a deal with Nokia to pay them for their technology being used in their iPhones, they might now be looking at another settlement with one of their business partners.
Samsung is one of Apple’s biggest parts suppliers, with over $5.7 billion-worth of products going to Apple, so a settlement might be best for both parties. Apple’s attorney recently suggested that executives “at the highest levels” on both sides are talking to settle this out of court. The attorney said th...

Apple could be cooking up black MacBook Air

Filed in: Apple

It has been widely reported that Apple is planning to refresh its MacBook Air family later this month or early next month, and now there’s a new rumor that may make the wait even more worthwhile. According to MacRumors, the refreshed top-end MacBook Air model may also be available with a new anodized black aluminum finish — a color option that hasn’t been seen since Apple did away with the black MacBook. The image above is from Colorwave, which offers custom paint jobs for a variety of gadgets, but it’s a good idea of what such a product could look like barring the trackpad. Apple’s refresh is also expected to deliver support for the new Thunderbolt I/O port as well as Intel’s new Sandy Brid...

Are these Verizon's New Tiered Data Plans?

Are these Verizon's New Tiered Data Plans?

Much like a great book, a roller coaster ride, or a Joss Whedon TV show, we knew that Verizon’s “unlimited” data plans were coming to an early end sooner or later. We just didn’t know when, or how much we (or, at least, those of us not on grandfathered plans) would have to cough up when the time came.
Now, things aren’t official just yet — but thanks to the ol’ rumor mill, we’ve got a pretty good idea of what to expect.

Man dies from electrocution while using and charging his cell phone simultaneously

Even though we don’t think about it that much, while others might take it for granted, recognized cell phone manufacturers around the world rigorously test their products to ensure that they’re safe to use. On the other hand, knock off phones might not be placed through the same testing standards we see in place with some of the big names in the industry,
Unfortunately for 25-year-old Dhanji Damor of Gujarat, India, he was electrocuted while charging and using his Chinese supplied phone. Commonly known as shanzai phones, which are basically cheap knock-offs of some popular smartphones, Damor was taken to the hospital after the whole incident occurred. Sadly, doctors declared him dead due to ...

Orange UK shows t-shirt that powers phones with sound waves

Orange UK shows t-shirt that powers phones with sound waves

Posted on Jun 21, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Orange

Orange has devised a new product for charging a mobile phone by harnessing the sound waves and vibrations produced around you. Called Sound Charge, the technology is built into a t-shirt that will be available to concertgoers at the Glastonbury Festival this summer, where there will be plenty of sound waves to test the technology out with.
The Sound Charge t-shirt has a Piezoelectric film embedded in the front of it that can absorb sound waves. The absorbed sound waves are then turned into an electrical current that is stored in batteries woven into the shirt. A user can plug their mobile phone into the shirt to charge a phone's battery using the energy stored in the shirt's batteries.

Nokia loses patent ruling for discontinued phones

Nokia loses patent ruling for discontinued phones

Posted on Jun 21, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: NOKIA

Nokia has lost a patent ruling in the UK to a company called IPCom. The patent covers certain 3G technologies, though Nokia isn't too worried about the ruling, since it doesn't currently produce anything that infringes upon IPCom's patent.
The court found two discontinued Nokia devices that did in fact violate IPCom's patent, but nothing in the company's current line-up does."We are pleased that the U.K. High Court declared that Nokia's current products do not infringe the patent," said Nokia. "This means that we can continue selling those products, now with legal certainty."
Unsurprisingly, IPCom was not too happy with how Nokia spun the court's decision. "Nokia is clearly misleading the pu...

HTC EVO 4G gets software update to fix Netflix compatibility

Posted on Jun 21, 2011 by MG1

Owners of the HTC EVO 4G were undoubtedly thrilled when the update for Android 2.3 Gingerbread was released, but there were a few nagging issues with the update. Notably, the new version of Android broke compatibility with the Netflix for Android app that was also recently released. Well, it looks like Sprint and HTC have addressed the issue and are now pushing out a maintenance update to correct it. Also packed in with the update is a voicemail notification fix and hearing aid compatibility. Users will get a notification on their phones when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

HP TouchPad now available for pre-order

Right on schedule, Hewlett-Packard’s first webOS-powered tablet is now available for pre-order. The HP TouchPad becomes available on July 1st but those who want to ensure they get their supersized webOS fix as soon as possible can pre-order the device through a number of different retailers. Best Buy and Amazon, among others, have the TouchPad available for pre-order at $499 for the 16GB model and $599 for the 32GB model, as expected. BGR took a hands-on look at the TouchPad when it was first unveiled back in February, and we were impressed. WebOS translates very well to a large form device, and the interoperability with HP’s upcoming Pre 3 smartphone is fantastic, though we still have no wo...

Skype lets top execs go before Microsoft deal closes

Posted on Jun 21, 2011 by Immortal

Skype has let eight of its top executives go just in time for the Microsoft buyout of the VoIP company to close.
Bloomberg claims that Skype's decision to let the executives go before Microsoft purchases the company is a tactic that will reduce the value of their stock options, which are likely to go up once the Microsoft buyout closes. The executives let go include some from Qik that joined the company when Skype purchased Qik earlier this year.
The FTC recently approved Microsoft's $8.5 billion purchase of Skype, which is likely to be completed shortly.
