Call it a meeting of minds or call it an unholy matrimony — in either event, the recent rash of high-profile breaches is about to get an adrenaline shot. Hacktivist group Anonymous and a crew of emerging merry hackers known as are joining forces to target the dissemination of government secrets and the defacement of other websites such as those belonging to banks. “As we’re aware, the government and whitehat security terrorists across the world continue to dominate and control our Internet ocean,” LulzSec said in a statement on Monday. “Sitting pretty on cargo bays full of corrupt booty, they think it’s acceptable to condition and enslave all vessels in sight. Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

If you want to see how your website will look in Microsoft’s new Internet Explorer 9 mobile browser, then you can now do so with a new Mobile Test Drive site. Microsoft has just launched the tool so that developers can make sure their sites mesh with the new browser that’s set to launch with the upcoming Windows Phone 7.1 Mango update.
The Mobile Test Drive site will work similar to the Internet Explorer 9 desktop version test drive site where various development samples will be published to highlight features and capabilities. Both the desktop and mobile versions of Internet Explorer 9 use the same core rendering engines and adhere to the concept of “same markup,” but the Microsoft team fel...

Microsoft gets FTC approval to buy Skype

Microsoft gets FTC approval to buy Skype

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

The FTC on Friday said it had given approval to Microsoft's buyout of Skype. The clearance determined that the deal wouldn't create any significant anti-competitive issues. The filing didn't say whether other agencies had to close the deal, which Microsoft had only said would be approved by the end of 2011.
Many have raised alarms over the deal given that Microsoft would take ownership of the dominant Internet calling company. It could theoretically use the deal to cut off support for other platforms, particularly Android and the iPhone, or else give favorable treatment for Windows Phone and other core platforms. Microsoft has insisted it would support other platforms but has had a poor trac...

Kobo eReader Touch Edition goes on sale in the US and Canada

Kobo eReader Touch Edition goes on sale in the US and Canada

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

At the moment, there are two very similar-looking e-readers with black-and-white Pearl E Ink touchscreens on the market, and now, the smaller and less expensive of the pair is up for grabs. The Kobo eReader Touch Edition went on sale today in the US and Canada for $129.99 (or $139.99 Canadian) at Best Buy, Borders, Walmart, and the Canadian bookseller Indigo. If you'll recall, the 6-inch Kobo is thinner, lighter, and more compact than the Nook Touch, even though its screen is the same size. It also undercuts it by $10 but it lacks the convenience of any physical buttons. Could these trade-offs be worth the trimmer design? We'll leave that to you and your wallet (and the guy who may or may no...

ChevronWP7 Labs will jailbreak your Windows Phone with Microsoft's approval

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft just earned itself a boatload of geek-cred and made Apple and Sony look pretty bad in the process. We knew the Windows Phone team was playing nice with the jailbreakers from ChevronWP7, but we didn't realize just how cozy the two were going to get. Today the devs announced that ChevronWP7 Labs would open up soon, with the approval of Redmond, allowing users to load homebrew apps on their handsets. Unlike tools from the iPhone Dev Team, this service won't be free. Instead, customers will have to cough up a small fee via PayPal -- but we're sure many of you are more than willing to pay a reasonable price to avoid the sort of cat and mouse game Apple has been playing with hackers sinc...
