UK student faces extradition to US over file-sharing site

UK student faces extradition to US over file-sharing site

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

A British computer science undergraduate is facing extradition to the United States after being accused of criminal copyright infringement.
23-year-old Richard O'Dwyer, of Sheffield Hallam University, ran the TVShack website, which offered links to illegal downloads of popular TV shows and movies, until November last year.
However, the site did not host any files and under UK law he could be protected. A case against the TV-Links website in 2010 was dismissed after a judge found that simply providing links was not an offence.
However US authorities want to try him on home soil, where he would be subject to stricter copyright laws, and a controversial US-UK accord offers the student little pr...

The new version is the first of a now Chrome-like fast schedule and focuses mostly on minor improvements over Firefox 4. It now recognizes CSS transitions, has better support for HTML5 and its Canvas mode, and is tackling privacy with a more prominent Do Not Track option.
Many fixes are also underneath, such as better performance for background tabs and integration with Linux. WebGL, spelling checks, and overall network and memory use have been given boosts as well.

HP TouchPad rumored to lack document editing at launch

HP TouchPad rumored to lack document editing at launch

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

The WebOS nuts at PreCentral have received an anonymous tip-off that HP's imminent slate won't be able to edit Office docs out of the box. As much as we'd like to dismiss this as a retaliatory rumor put out by BlackBerry, it emits an unfortunate whiff of truth. While HP has previously made a big deal of the TouchPad's inclusion of the Quickoffice app, it has only said it's "working with Quickoffice" to include document editing, and it has never demoed editing in action. The company has recently been trying to boost its app count, but perhaps it should have put more effort into securing core functionality instead. A glimmer of hope, though: the same tip-off also suggested that at least some e...

Device Analyzer Android study wants to track your every move, if you'll let it

Device Analyzer Android study wants to track your every move, if you'll let it

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

And here we thought folks were concerned about protecting their personal data. As it turns out, however, a surprising chunk of Android users have volunteered to give a group of University of Cambridge researchers a look at exactly how they use their cellphones. By downloading the Device Analyzer app from the Android market, more than 1,000 participants have allowed the data collection program to harvest statistics in the background while they use their phones. Those statistics -- varying from when the power is switched on, to which apps are in use -- are then made available to users via the Device Analyzer website. Of course, this is Cambridge, a rather well respected institution of higher l...

Windows 8 Nears Beta, Build 7989 Screenshot Leaks

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft’s Windows 8 may be nearing beta with new screenshots leaked today from a Milestone 3 copy. The interface was first demoed at the D9 conference by Microsoft Windows chief Steven Sinofsky and even shown running on prototype tablet hardware at Computex 2011. For developers anxious to get a hold of the beta build of Windows 8, rumors suggest the full leak could be coming soon.
The new screenshots published today from MDL via BetaArchive shows a new background and boot screen along with the return of the Microsoft betta fish. The betta fish was used back in Windows 7 beta as a wallpaper and soon turned into a mascot for Microsoft’s beta stages of Windows 7. Its return to build 7989 of W...

Sega Pass hacked, LulzSec vows innocence and defense

Sega Pass hacked, LulzSec vows innocence and defense

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Sega on Friday in a warning to gamers said that its Sega Pass online service had been hacked. It took down the service after discovering that the database had been compromised. Those at PlayStation Lifestyle and elsewhere had been told that e-mail addresses and encrypted passwords had been compromised.
Passwords at Sega Pass had been reset, but anyone who used similar passwords was urged to change passwords elsewhere.
No one has stepped forward to claim responsibility, but Lulz Security in an unusual step denied involvement. The collective instead suggested Sega could even contact them to get revenge "We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you," LulzSec said. "We love the Dre....

Apple, Intel locked in as bidders for Nortel patents

Apple, Intel locked in as bidders for Nortel patents

Both Apple and Intel have been cleared to bid in Nortel's vital wireless patent auction, contacts slipped out on Friday. After investigations, both have been allowed to go ahead. Ericsson had also been greenlit, according to the Wall Street Journal, and was being accompanied by RPX, a proxy company that buys patents to avoid them being used against its clients.
Google had already been approved and is considered the baseline at $900 million. It serves as a "stalking horse" meant to deter patent trolls as well as low bids from companies that might buy in solely to sue Android developers, such as Microsoft.

Symantec Spots Trojan Targeting Bitcoin Digital Wallets

Symantec Spots Trojan Targeting Bitcoin Digital Wallets

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Symantec has uncovered a Trojan that appears to be targeting users of Bitcoin, a decentralized P2P-based online currency. Bitcoin consultants, however, downplayed the threat.
"The Trojan is Infostealer.Coinbit and it has one motive: to locate your Bitcoin wallet.dat file and email it to the attacker," Symantec said in a Friday blog post.
Bitcoin describes itself as "the first decentralized digital currency" (more info in the video below). Bitcoins are generated by users running a free app, which requires them to solve a cryptographic proof-of-work problem, or block. This process is known as Bitcoin mining and successful mining can earn someone up to 50 Bitcoins per block, which are stored in...

Nintendo To Introduce New Wii U Prototype

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Developers are about to get their hands on a new version of Nintendo's impending Wii U console.
Within the next month, the company plans to have a brand new prototype of the device ready for developers, many of whom seem to be excited about the console even though the rest of us don't have many details.
Gary Dunn of Sega Europe told Eurogamer in an interview that the Wii U specs are far from being concrete, and even Nintendo's closest partners don't know everything the final version will entail. "It's still a little early. There's another generation of prototype hardware coming out in June or July that's going to give us more information," he said.

NOOK Beats Kindle For The Very First Time On Consumer Reports

NOOK Beats Kindle For The Very First Time On Consumer Reports

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

The e-reader competition between the Barnes & Noble Nook and the Amazon Kindle has always left the former with a bruised ego. But with the latest “All-New Nook” (also known as the Simple Touch) unveiled earlier this month, things have taken a turn. For the very first time, Consumer Reports has nudged the Nook ahead of the Kindle in its e-reader rankings.
We had our hands-on and unboxing of the All-New Nook and definitely liked the more simplified form factor. Gone are the dual screens and distracting features of the first edition Nook for an All-New Nook that provides a more purist reading experience.

AT&T has yet to announce a timeframe for bringing the OS update to the Captivate. The build dates are only separated by two weeks, suggesting the official release may be imminent.

Apple Accepts WebGL Graphics For iAd, Ready For 3D Ads?

Apple Accepts WebGL Graphics For iAd, Ready For 3D Ads?

Posted on Jun 20, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Apple

It was revealed today that Apple will be supporting WebGL in iOS 5, but limiting its use for only iAd developers. WebGL is a new rendering standard that lets developers create 3D animations and graphics in websites without the need for a plugin. Being used for iAds could mean lots of really annoying in-your-face ads to come with iOS 5 apps. But, Apple’s restriction of the technology to only iAds has other implications as well.
WebGL is still very new and its acceptance isn’t solid yet. Recently, Microsoft announced that it will not be supporting WebGL in Internet Explorer and called the technology “harmful.” WebGL allows websites to take advantage of your system’s hardware for processing and...

Apple could buy lion's share of mobile rivals in cash estimate analysts

Apple could feasibly buy the bulk of its competitors using its cash reserves alone, it’s been suggested, with only Samsung proving beyond its reach should Steve Jobs decide to go on a bizarre cellular spending spree. Asymco crunched the stats and figured that, with Apple likely to announce $70bn in cash and other immediate assets in its Q2 2011 financial results, it could readily snap up Nokia, RIM, LG, Motorola Mobility, Sony Ericsson and LG.
HTC’s enterprise value, it’s estimated, is $25.4bn, while Nokia comes in at $22.6bn and RIM at $13.8bn. Motorola Mobility is just $4.2bn. As for Sony Ericsson and LG, they’re trickier to calculate being subsidiaries of larger firms, but Asymco reckons ...
