HTC EVO 4G LTE release date is May 18, Sprint announces officially

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

Forget all rumors and speculations – the HTC EVO 4G LTE release date is now official. Sprint just announced that the smartphone will be available for purchase starting May 18, just like what most clues indicated. Of course, those of you who have invested $200 in pre-ordering a unit should expect receiving your parcels on that day or earlier.
For those who need a refresher, the HTC EVO 4G LTE is a redesigned version of the HTC One X. In terms of hardware, you get a 4.7-inch 720p display, dual-core Snapdragon S4 clocked at 1.5GHz, and a snappy 8-megapixel camera. When it comes to looks, however, the device has been given a few alterations. To start, its body is made out of aluminum and sports ...

AT&T's HTC One X gets rooted, catches up with the global gang

AT&T's HTC One X gets rooted, catches up with the global gang

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

No sooner did the international variant of the One X reveal its source code, now the AT&T version has landed itself an unofficial root. Better still, the folks over at xda-developers have already squeezed the occasionally laborious process into a one-click install. For those not in the know, this doesn't mean an unlocked bootloader, which is still wrapped up in AT&T red tape. Root meddling types can hit up the source for the necessary files. Just, be careful -- that's some pricey polycarbonate and the Galaxy S III's still some weeks away.

An in-depth look into how HP lost its way

An in-depth look into how HP lost its way

Filed in: HP

By now, the polarizing tenure of Léo Apotheker and HP's fumbled acquisition of Palm have both been well documented, but James Bandler and Doris Burke delve even deeper into the company's history in a lengthy piece for Fortune. The Compaq merger, HP's oft-dysfunctional board of directors, the rise and sudden resignation of former chief executive Mark Hurd, and Meg Whitman's current efforts to steer the industry giant back to its former glory are all examined in detail. Naturally there's also plenty surrounding that abandoned decision to spin off the PC division. Behind-the-scenes fodder only enhances further the troubling portrait of how a tech mainstay lost its way. For example, one HP offic...

Nokia not worried about LG’s Windows Phone departure

Nokia not worried about LG’s Windows Phone departure

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

Speaking to FierceWireless here, Chris Weber, Nokia’s president for the Americas, said he was not concerned with LG dropping out of the Windows Phone game to focus on Android, saying they were not a major player, and their exit will not have a significant impact.
"I see significant commitment from HTC, Samsung," Weber said. "I actually see increased momentum and commitment form a various set of OEMs on the platform."
He cited the recent announcement of the Samsung Focus 2 as an example of such commitment, saying the $50 handset would benefit the whole ecosystem.

Microsoft Patents Pressure-Sensitive Controller

Microsoft Patents Pressure-Sensitive Controller

Since Nintendo pushed the envelope, hardware manufacturers seem intent on making new controller types. Now that each of the big gaming companies have at least dabbled with motion controls, biometric feedback seems to be the next big thing. Sony is looking into biometric controllers to measure factors like sweat and heart rate. Not to be outdone, Microsoft is apparently considering a pressure-sensitive controller. The company has registered a US Patent (8,172,675) for a controller with a "pressure-sensitive exterior surface." The patent suggests that device memory could store the output signatures to identify users simply by how they grip the controller. And confirming that these plans relate...

T-Mobile releases Q1 2012 earnings report, sees surge in customers

T-Mobile USA issued its Q1 2012 earnings report today, declaring a net increase of 187,000 new customers. That's a rather notable statistic, considering that the carrier reported a net loss of 526,000 customers in Q4 2011, and losses of 99,000 customers in the first quarter of last year. The company attributed this increase to a surge in prepaid users that helped offset a loss of 510,000 contract customers.

Google raises concerns over browser restrictions in Windows 8

Google raises concerns over browser restrictions in Windows 8

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

Google has agreed with Mozilla's stance that Microsoft is blocking browser choice in the next-generation Windows platforms. The search giant says that it shares "the concerns Mozilla has raised regarding the Windows 8 environment restricting user choice and innovation." Mozilla's complaint was specifically targeted at the ARM-based Windows RT, and its not clear if Google's mention of "Windows 8" is simply poorly worded or if it has broader issues with the Metro environment. Google's full statement reads:

The Pirate Bay must be blocked, says Dutch court

The Pirate Bay must be blocked, says Dutch court

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

After becoming the first European country to pass net neutrality into law yesterday, a court in The Hague has today ruled that Dutch internet providers UPC, KPN, Tele2, T-Mobile and Telfort must block access to The Pirate Bay. While the law prevents access providers from throttling traffic or charging a premium for services like Skype, it still allows individual websites to be blocked with a court order.
The ruling against The Pirate Bay, according to popular Dutch site Tweakers.net, goes into effect within 10 business days of all affected parties being officially informed, meaning access to the notorious torrent site could be blocked by the end of May. A fine of €10,000 per day will be issu...

As part of its announcement of the new version of Google+ for the Apple iPhone, Google dropped a hint that an equally sexy new G+ client for the Android platform would be available in a few weeks. Google also noted that the Android version would have a few extra surprises in it. Considering how good the iPhone version looks, and the fact that the Android mobile client already has support for rich web snippets when sharing, we expect the new app to be very cool indeed.

New version of Google Maps heralds major emphasis on location-based offers

New version of Google Maps heralds major emphasis on location-based offers

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Another day, another update to Google Maps for Android, right? Today’s update doesn’t have a long list of updates, but don’t be fooled into thinking that they are mere novelties; they are very important to Google’s digital ecosystem. Unlike Apple, who would wait until all the pieces were "perfect" and then release the service along with a major product launch or iOS update, Google is instead laying out bits and pieces, using feedback to polish each level as they go. But by looking at how the pieces are starting to fit together, it's easy to see that Google is building up a powerful mobile-driven offers and marketing service that will be more useful (and profitable) than the ads you currently...

At the 2012 CTIA Wireless show in New Orleans, a T-Mobile executive has hinted that T-Mobile might start to offer new video services that would be paid for by sponsors and would not count against a user's data plan.
The Wall Street Journal is reporting that T-Mobile USA Senior Vice President Brad Duea made the comments in an interview. The publication also notes that Verizon Wireless Vice President Brian Higgins said that Verizon also has interest in creating similar "toll-free" offerings for its customers, but that such plans were in the early stages of development.

Samsung looks past Android to find an alternative OS

Samsung looks past Android to find an alternative OS

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

Android has been good to Samsung. Very, very good. Samsung recently reported its second consecutive quarter of record earnings, thanks in no small part to its wildly popular line of Android-powered Galaxy smartphones. The South Korea-based vendor also just took the wraps off its next-generation flagship Android smartphone, the Galaxy S III. While the device may have opened the door for rivals to make some moves if they can act quickly enough, Samsung is currently the No.1 smartphone vendor in the world by volume and the Galaxy S III should help it retain that title. As good as Android has been for Samsung, however, the vendor continues to make it clear that it does not want to put all its eg...

We’ve been talking about mobile payments for years now and even though some think it may be about four to six years away from the tipping point, a Visa executive said we could see some interesting developments within two years.
During an interview at CTIA 2012, Brad Greene, senior business leader mobile, said that Visa has been paving the way for this transition for years and we’re seeing the fruits of that labor with things like V.Me. While it wants to be your destination for digital money, it will also partner with other companies that enable mobile money.

Samsung Galaxy Note for AT&T spotted munching on Ice Cream Sandwich at CTIA

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

The Android Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Samsung GALAXY Note was moved to this quarter, which almost half gone, so it shouldn't be too much of a wait for those impatient Note owners who want the latest and greatest Android 4.0 on their device.
In fact, that AT&T version of the Note has been recorded on video at CTIA running Ice Cream Sandwich with a whiff of TouchWiz applied over it. Even if you didn't see the firmware version, some other telling signs, like the presence of a quick access to Settings in the drop-down notifiction window suggest Android ICS is onboard.
