Nvidia GeForce GTX 670 launches with high-end specs, $399 price

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

Been lusting after a GeForce GTX 680 at a more affordable price point? Nvidia has done the inevitable and trickled its Kepler GPU architecture down to a more wallet-friendly level with the introduction of the $399 GeForce GTX 670. The new card is based on the same DNA, in Nvidia's words, as the GTX 680, but nixes 192 CUDA cores and about a tenth off the base and boost operating speeds to arrive at 1,344 cores and 915MHz / 980MHz clocks. It retains the same generous 2GB video buffer, made up of 256-bit GDDR5 RAM, and in a standard configuration will ship with two 6-pin auxiliary power connectors. Nvidia rates the GTX 670's TDP at 170W, however if you run it in a completely stock config, the c...

Nokia 808 PureView coming to the US, but don’t ask for carrier subsidy

Nokia 808 PureView coming to the US, but don’t ask for carrier subsidy

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

The 41-megapixel Nokia 808 PureView is a device we can imagine people interested in mobile photography would be eager to get, and after Nokia disappointed us by officially stating in the product page that the phone won’t arrive to the US, now it’s backtracked a bit. The 808 PureView will come to the United States, but it won’t be subsidized by carriers. Rather, it will ship unlocked.
“We’ll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months,” Nokia US President Chris Weber said.
That’s already reassuring and nice, but we’re pretty certain that even without Nokia’s help unlocked 808 PureViews would have arrived on interested retailers.

Google reportedly making a Game Center for Android

Google reportedly making a Game Center for Android

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

If you play games on the iPhone, you are probably familiar with the Game Center, the social hub and that links players together so they can compete for high scores, show off trophies, invite people to multi-person games, and otherwise knits together the iOS game ecosystem. Windows Phone, while having a smaller gaming ecosystem, likewise has Xbox Live to provide a similar service. If you use Android…you might use Open Feint, but it’s a third party application that isn’t integrated into Android the same way as on competing platforms.
That’s going to change in the not-so-distant future, according to an anonymous source speaking to Business Insider. The source indicates that Google has become aw...

AT&T to start testing small, short-range cell sites this year to boost network coverage

Posted on May 10, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: AT&T

AT&T is going to start testing small cells "later this year and into next year" to improve its network coverage and capacity, the company reiterated at CTIA. The miniature, short-range cell sites can be deployed at a fraction of the cost of a traditional tower. AT&T announced it was planning tests this year, and Cisco announced it was working with AT&T on developing small cells, at MWC in February. However, AT&T hasn't made clear the particular type of hardware (3G, 4G, etc.) it's planning to test. Small cells can be deployed in a wide variety of settings, like the sides of lamp posts, allowing telecoms to increase network coverage by filling in holes between their bigger, "macro" cell tower...

There are actually two images now, the first of which bears the FBI anti-piracy warning badge alongside one for the Homeland Security Investigations division of the Department of Homeland Security. It also includes the familiar warning that copyright infringement "is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000." That updated screen will now also be joined by a new one from the National Intellectual Property Rights Coordination Center (IPR), which shows the department's badge and warns...

Twitter has launched an investigation after the popular micro-blogging service was breached and details of 55,000 accounts were published on the Internet by hackers. Despite this, it appears that the spoils were spammer accounts with the published usernames and passwords being of no real value.
In an announcement on their Twitter Communications account, they wrote "we're looking into the situation and have pushed out password resets to potentially affected accounts." They also noted in a separate posting that the 55,000 strong list of usernames and passwords contained over 20,000 duplicates of what they said were "suspended spam accounts and incorrect login credentials."
