Samsung and Apple file to drop claims to get trial started on time

Last week both Apple and Samsung were told by Judge Lucy Koh that if each wanted to get their trial started on time, the number of claims from each side had to be reduced. At first, courtroom analysts figured Apple would be more interested in slowing things down, but with the introduction of the Samsung Galaxy S III, it seems Apple would really like to get a verdict in the case. To get things started on July 30th, both manufacturers decided to offer to drop about half their claims with Apple letting go of all of its trademark claims. While it does sound like a sacrifice for both sides, Apple wants the dismissal to be without prejudice meaning that it assert these dismissed claims at another ...

CTIA: AT&T home automation demonstration

CTIA: AT&T home automation demonstration

One of the things that really makes it seem like we’re living in the future is being able to control all of your appliances from a smartphone or tablet and during CTIA 2012, AT&T gave us a glimpse of that future with its home automation demo. It’s pretty cool.
The home automation demonstration was done with an iPad that could control lamps, alarms and the thermostat via a combination of WiFi and 3G. You have to hook up appliances to a connected adapter which then connects to a 3G enabled “brain” in the house that can be controlled over WiFi with your tablet.

The Pirate Bay issues warning against copycat pirates

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

The Pirate Bay's days of facilitating file-sharing in the UK may be numbered, but the Swedish torrent site seems more concerned with protecting its site from copycats.
The site, which will be blocked by five of the UK's top ISPs following last-week's high court order, says rivals are setting up proxy sites and using its name and index, while also charging users.
The site welcomes some of these proxies, as they will offer access to the site once the blockades are in place, but others are seeking to profit from TPB's vast archive of music, movies and TV shows.

Google Play Store surpasses 15 billion downloads

Filed in: Google

After reports surfaced claiming the Google Play Store was about to reach 15 billion app downloads, Google confirmed to TechCrunch that it reached the milestone “a few weeks ago.” Apple reached the same number of downloads in July 2011 and recently surpassed 25 billion downloads in March. The gap between the two marketplaces seems to be widening slightly, with Google seeing about 1 billion app downloads per month while Apple is serving about 1.25 billion app downloads per month. The Google Play Store currently has more than 500,000 apps, while Apple’s App Store has some 600,000. There have been reports, however, that claim iOS developers are making more money than their Android counterparts. ...

Carrier IQ hires former Verizon privacy counsel Magnolia Mobley as Chief Privacy Officer

It's been several months since Carrier IQ explained its data collection practices and responded to FCC and Senatorial inquiry about its privacy policies. Despite the fact that it's no longer in the headlines, Carrier IQ's still intent on improving how it handles consumer info. That's why the firm has hired Magnolia Mobley away from Verizon (who eschewed Carrier IQ's services in favor of its own Remote Diagnostics tool), where she was Big Red's Chief Privacy Counsel. Ms. Mobely will be Carrier IQ's General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer and she's expected to help the company focus on preserving consumer privacy. You can read up on her credentials further in the PR after the break.

Now Sprint also likes Windows Phone 8

Now Sprint also likes Windows Phone 8

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

Sprint has not been the best of Windows Phone fans, famously suggesting HTC Arrive buyers should recycle their 6 month old phones for a new iPhone. The HTC Arrive is still their only Windows Phone.
Now Sprint’s director of consumer acquisition, David Owens, has expressed more positive sentiments towards the successor of Windows Phone 7, saying he was "still bullish on Apollo" at the CTIA trade show today.
Back in March there was a rumour of a LTE Windows Phone 8 handset coming to Sprint after the fall, and I guess Sprint will be dipping their toe into the Windows Phone pond once again.

BlackBerry Curve 9320 now official: BB OS 7.1, 2.44-inch display, BBM button

BlackBerry Curve 9320 now official: BB OS 7.1, 2.44-inch display, BBM button

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

The 9320 has visited more countries during its short gestation than some phones get to see in their whole lives, but it's finally arrived. The specs are pretty much what we guessed, with the socially-focused BB OS 7.1 onboard, a 3.2-megapixel camera and typical Curve features like a 2.44-inch 320 x 240 non-touch LCD display, 'super charged' 1450mAh battery, FM radio and a small, lightweight 103 gram QWERTY form factor. Same specs, different day, but then there's also microSD expandability beyond the 512MB of eMMC, which can't be taken for granted, plus a new feature in the form of a dedicated BBM key on the side. As for the 9320's cheaper sibling, the 9220 shown above, we've already been han...

Google and Oracle Enter Round Two of Heavyweight Legal Fight

Google and Oracle Enter Round Two of Heavyweight Legal Fight

After the jury returned a partial verdict in the copyright phase of the Google-Oracle trial - unable to decide whether Google's recreation of the Java platform constituted "fair use" of Oracle's copyright - the trial has now entered the patent phase, where the same jury will seek to decide whether Google infringed on Oracle's patents.
No doubt, the arguments will be just as heated - and just as complicated. But with his opening salvo, Oracle counsel Mike Jacobs told the jury there's a least one thing it no longer has to worry about. "I think you'll be pleased to know that ‘fair use' isn't a part of the patent phase," he said.

Myspace may have lost out in the social networking wars to Facebook, but the company is still alive and kicking. It found itself in a spot of trouble with the FTC not too long ago regarding user privacy, with the company handing identifiable information over to advertisers. Yesterday Myspace settled the matter by agreeing to submit to privacy audits to be independently conducted over the next 20 years.

Twitter says accounts hackers posted were mostly banned spammers

Twitter says accounts hackers posted were mostly banned spammers

Posted on May 09, 2012 by MG1

This week hackers claiming to be affiliated with Anonymous posted details from about 55,000 twitter accounts. The hackers claim to have broken into twitter servers to steal the data. Twitter is now claiming that most of those 55,000 accounts are bogus. In fact, twitter says that most of those accounts that were published were for accounts that are banned for spamming.
The details published by the hackers on Pastebin included five pages of twitter usernames and passwords. Reports originally claimed that some celebrity accounts were among those that were hacked, but that hasn’t been confirmed. Twitter has been debunking claims of a large and successful hack. However, the website does note that...

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox 720 may already be in production

Posted on May 08, 2012 by MG1

A Texas electronics company has allegedly begun production on Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox gaming console, according to a report from IGN. Production of the Xbox 720 is reportedly underway at the Austin, Texas branch of Flextronics, the same electronics company responsible for manufacturing the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox. Despite these reports, however, Microsoft firmly stated that the next-generation Xbox will not debut at this year’s E3 gaming convention. The hardware currently being manufactured may instead be development kits for top-tier game developers that will get early access to Microsoft’s next-generation hardware in order to prepare new titles. The “Xbox 720″ is rumored to...

Facebook investor roadshow sees Zuckerberg keep it casual

Posted on May 08, 2012 by MG1

Mark Zuckerberg is starting to come to terms with the fact that as the head of a humongous public company he’ll have to have a little more stage presence. In an effort to promote Facebook’s vaulting into its initial public offering, the young billionaire is going on a roadshow across the country, though by his appearance you wouldn’t believe he’s there to talk about a $10 billion entry into the stock market. His presence can be described with one word: casual.
