Reddit founder won’t invest in Facebook thanks to CISPA
Like UnlikeAs you read this, tens of thousands of brokers and investors are scraping together every loose penny they can find to get a chunk of Facebook’s initial public offering. But one technology investor won’t be joining them: Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit.com and current NYC-based angel investor. He’s not concerned with bubbles or percentages, just with Facebook’s corporate culture: he objects to the fact that the social networking giant supports the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act, or CISPA.

In particular, the DisplayMate tests were concerned with how devices handle increases in ambient light, a regularly-occurring challenge for anyone wanting to use a phone or a tablet while actually on the move.

ACTA unlikely to happen, says European Commissioner
Like UnlikeNeelie Kroes, The European Commissioner for Digital Agenda, said in a speech on Friday that the controversial ACTA bill was unlikely to come into effect. ACTA is a trade agreement that aims to eliminate the international exchange of counterfeit goods and pirated material. It has been signed by 22 of the 27 EU states, along with the US, Canada, Japan, and others, but must be approved by the EC to become European law. The trade agreement is currently being investigated by the European Court of Justice over concerns that its invasions of privacy are against European law. Kroes said that we are "likely to be in a world without SOPA and without ACTA," and we now need to "find solutions to make th...

Google Is Found (Kind of) Guilty in Java Trial (Updated)
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
The verdict is in for the Oracle vs. Google trial on whether Java was used improperly in the development of Android. The answer? Yes, sort of.
The jury ruled that Oracle has proven that Google's admitted use of Java was infringing on Oracle's API. Specific portions of code were ruled as infringing Oracle's copyright or not, but the decision states that the overall structure and sequence of Java had been infringed. There was no decision on whether it fell under fair use. Google's already moved for a mistrial on the grounds that the verdict could not include partial answers.

Samsung, Qualcomm start up Alliance for Wireless Power to take on Qi
Like UnlikeFiled in: Samsung
Wireless power has until now been closely associated with the Wireless Power Consortium's Qi standard. There's now a second proposed common ground in the Alliance for Wireless Power, or A4WP. Samsung and Qualcomm, along with some help from Powermat, SK Telecom, Ever Win Industries, Gill Industries and Peiker Acustic, are making an alternative that allows for "spatial freedom" between your gadget and the charging source, although whether or not that's better than the 1.6-inch distance of the updated Qi spec is left to the imagination. The strategy doesn't just let your device avoid French kissing the charger: it lets you power up through a material besides a metal plate, and it reduces the co...
