Kodak housed nuclear reactor with enriched uranium

The reactor was kept securely in a bunker with two-foot concrete walls, and was decommissioned in 2006. When the uranium was removed in November 2007, it was taken away in protective containers and escorted by armed guards. While the facility was mentioned in several research papers and a few public documents on federal websites, its existence was otherwise restricted information following security concerns after 9/11.
Experts are perplexed as to how Kodak acquired the material. Miles Pomper, senior research associate at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies in Washington, told the Democrat and Chronicle: “It’s such an odd situation because private companies just don’t have this material.”...

Intel: Windows 8 on ARM Is an Uphill Fight

Intel: Windows 8 on ARM Is an Uphill Fight

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Windows 8 is stirring up a fair deal of controversy for Microsoft. Now, Intel has come out as saying that it thinks that running the new OS on ARM hardware is going to prove difficult.
During an investor meeting, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini pointed out that the heritage of x86 hardware will make support for Windows 8 far, far more straightforward than ARM-powered devices. He explained:
"I think they have a big uphill fight. We have the advantage of the incumbency, advantage of the legacy support. Not just in terms of applications but devices."

U.S. smartphone adoption is faster than any other major technology shift

U.S. smartphone adoption is faster than any other major technology shift

With smartphones already accounting for more than half of the mobile phones in the United States, we all know that the market is expanding rapidly, but how does this growth stack up with previous rates of technological adoption? That was the question asked by Michael Degusta in MIT’s quarterly Technology Review. Or rather the questions, since adoption cycles go through three distinct phases, an early adopter phase (0-10%), a maturing stage (10%-40%) and finally achieve market saturation (40%-75%).
That distinction is important, as smartphones are just entering the saturation phase, so we really can’t comment on how quickly it will eclipse that 75% mark. But looking at early adoption and mark...

Facebook proposes more changes to clarify privacy policy

Facebook proposes more changes to clarify privacy policy

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

About two months after making its last round of changes, Facebook has again proposed an update to its Data Use or privacy policy. In a blog post, Facebook says the new policy comes in response to a request from the Irish Data Protection Commissioner’s Office, which regulates Facebook's European affiliate. It's primarily aimed at clarifying existing policies, either by rewording them or adding examples. It explains, for example, the policy that lets Facebook use data to serve you ads on outside sites, how cookies are used on Facebook, and how Facebook can "retain [your] data as long as necessary to provide you services." Some changes reflect the new terminology of the site, with "timelines" i...

Foxconn Technology Group founder and chief executive Terry Gou has reportedly gone on record in stating that his company will soon begin manufacturing a television for Apple. Production has not yet begun, China Daily reports, and the electronics manufacturing giant is currently preparing its facilities for Apple’s HDTV. The site claims Gou made the comments during a press conference in Shanghai on Friday. Apple’s long rumored HDTV, or “iTV” as it is often called, will reportedly look much like the company’s current LED Cinema Display. It is said to feature an aluminum casing, iOS, voice-powered remote control features courtesy of Siri, and an iSight camera for FaceTime video chats. Earlier r...

Nokia 808 Pureview bound for US

Nokia 808 Pureview bound for US

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Nokia's powerful cameraphone, the 808 PureView, launched this month in countries around the world - but not the U.S.
In fact, Nokia previously stated that they had no plans to bring the Symbian-run 808 Pureview (or any other non-Windows Phone smartphones) stateside in the future.
So it comes as a pleasant surprise that Nokia's U.S. president, Chris Weber, said that the company is trying to "figure out a way" to bring the Pureview to North American shelves.
Weber said that the phone won't be picked up by any specific U.S. carrier, but that it will be AT&T-compatible.

This Is What Developing For Android Looks Like

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

You know how many Android developers complain about fragmentation? Yeah, this is what fragmentation looks like.
Animoca, a Hong Kong mobile app developer that has seen more than 70 million downloads, says it does quality assurance testing with about 400 Android devices. Again, that’s testing with four hundred different phones and tablets for every app they ship!
The photo above is just a sampling of Animoca’s fleet of Android test units. Yat Siu, who is CEO of Animoca’s parent company Outblaze, snapped and posted it from Outblaze’s headquarters today. In total, Siu says their studio has detected about 600 unique Android devices on their network.
“We haven’t managed to track down all of those...

Xbox 360 users will soon be able to surf the web using Kinect gesture controls as Microsoft works on a modified version of Internet Explorer 9.
Currently the Xbox 360’s browsing credentials is restricted to media results via Bing voice search. However, Microsoft is updating its IE browser to enable web surfing direct from the console for the first time.
Kinect gesture controls are also being implemented by Microsoft, meaning users will be able to navigate the web with hand movements as well as their voice. It all sounds very Minority Report.

NVIDIA reports Q1 earnings: rakes $60.4 million profit on $924.9 million in revenue

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: nVIDIA

What's black and white and red all over? One thing it's probably not is NVIDIA's Q1 2013 earnings report. That's why we're here to dig through the muck and tell you that the company saw both profits and revenue fall from last quarter. Revenue was down three percent to $924.9 million but, more shockingly, net income dropped 47.9 percent to just $60 million. With a slew of new product launches over the last few months NVIDIA is optimistic about the future and actually managed to beat Wall Street's expectations. Though it offers little explanation for the drop off in its earnings press release, we'd expect things to get back to normal soon. For all the fine financial details, check out the PR a...

Facebook proposes more transparent privacy policy, wants to know what you think of it

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

Facebook's had some privacy foibles in the not-so-distant past, and has been working to improve its policies to better inform Facebook users how their info is exploited. Last year, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner's Office did an audit of Facebook's data usage approach, and determined that, while Facebook's doing a decent job, further details should be provided to us all. Well, the social network's recently responded by creating a Terms and Policies Hub to make its myriad policies easy to find. Additionally, it's adding new examples and explanations to its Data Use Policy about how the 'book employs cookies on its site, while also shedding some light on how our info's used for advertis...

Google concludes that search results are protected by First Amendment

Google has come to the conclusion that results obtained through search engines are within the provider’s First Amendment rights. The proclamation is in response to those that have complained that the search giant favors their own products in search results.
PCMag points out that Google has denied the practice but even if they did favor their own results, the prioritizing would be protected under Google’s First Amendment right to decide how they want to present information to the user.
Google has published a report on the matter in association with law professor Eugene Volokh. In it, Volokh says that selective search results are no different than newspapers, magazines or other media outlets t...

Russian satellite's 121-megapixel image of Earth is most detailed yet

Russian satellite's 121-megapixel image of Earth is most detailed yet

Posted on May 14, 2012 by MG1

There's been a long history of NASA-provided "Blue Marble" images of Earth, but now we're getting a different perspective thanks to photos taken by the Elektro-L No.1 Russian weather satellite. Unlike NASA's images, this satellite produces 121-megapixel images that capture the Earth in one shot instead of a collection of pictures from multiple flybys stitched together. The result is an image that's the highest-resolution image of Earth yet. The image certainly looks different than what we're used to seeing, and that's because the camera aboard the weather satellite combines data from three visible and one infrared wavelengths of light, a method that turns vegetation into the rust color that ...

ZTE Windows Phones coming to the U.S. by year's end

Posted on May 11, 2012 by MG1

ZTE wants to grow its Windows Phone business beyond Europe and Asia, and eventually bring its smartphones to the U.S. We guess they’re talking about the Tania handset, though as far as we know they may have some other products in the pipeline, as well.
At the moment, the Chinese company has a number of low-to-mid range devices on sale across U.S. carriers (some of which are Android-based) and offering a Windows Phone device could prove beneficial for their bottom line. Moreover, with ZTE entering the picture, customers get another option, the one that doesn’t necessarily pulls them into expensive monthly contracts.

A small number of HTC One X units are suffering from a message notifications bug which forces the user to open up the messaging application in order to see if there are any new messages. The bug prevents the status bar from showing that a message has been received and also does not allow a badge to show up on the messaging icon on the home screen to alert the phone's user to a message.
