The countdown to Oneiric Ocelot begins, Ubuntu 11.10 arrives October 13th

The countdown to Oneiric Ocelot begins, Ubuntu 11.10 arrives October 13th

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

A whole new world? A whole new computer? Those are some pretty epic promises coming from the folks at Canonical, especially since we've seen the most recent beta and Ubuntu 11.10 and, while its packed with welcome improvements over Natty, it's not exactly revolutionary. Still, we're excited that on October 13th the final release of Oneiric Ocelot will be hitting the web with an improved Dash that integrates search Lenses, new default apps, a spiffed-up app switcher and application syncing across multiple devices. There are plenty of other little tweaks and improvements that add polish to the popular Linux distribution -- more than we could possibly cover without inspiring a string of TLDR co...

JVC brings GC-PX10 hybrid 1080p60 video, still camera to US

JVC chose Monday to bring one of its most unique cameras to the US. The GC-PX10 is meant to stand as the best of both moving and still imagery. Through its use of the Falconbrid chip from the TD1, it can record 1080p video at a full 60 frames per second but can still snap 8.3-megapixel shots in mid-video with the relatively large 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor.
Special modes have their own unique advantages over either camcorders or conventional still cameras. The camera can shoot full 12-megapixel, ISO 6,400 stills at 30 frames per second for two seconds but can shoot 8.3-megapixel stills at an even faster 60 frames per second. Slow motion video is an option at 640x360 at 300 frames per second for ...

64GB iPhone 4S and 8GB iPhone 4 Show Up on Vodafone Germany's Site

64GB iPhone 4S and 8GB iPhone 4 Show Up on Vodafone Germany's Site

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Well the cat's just about out of the clear plastic shrink-wrap bag on the iPhone 4S. Giz Brazil had exclusive photos of Apple's new iPhone 4S over the weekend, and now Vodafone Germany's listed the iPhone 4S and a new 8GB iPhone 4 on its official site.
The Vodafone site lists 16, 32, and 64GB models of the iPhone 4S, and 8, 16 and 32GB models of the iPhone 4 on multiple accessory pages. We've heard about the 8GB iPhone 4 previously, and of course the 64GB iPhone has been rumored for years. With iPhone Day coming tomorrow, this seems like it's probably a little more than gum flapping and guesstimating by Vodafone, but it could just as easily be a dummy listing installed ahead of tomorrow to r...

Nokia Ace: The third Nokia Windows Phone surfaces

Nokia Ace: The third Nokia Windows Phone surfaces

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

We’ve already heard that Nokia might be launching not one but two Windows Phone 7 smartphones at the end of October; however, we're now hearing rumours that Nokia could be planning a third handset as well.
Over the weekend spec details leaked out for the Nokia Ace thanks to MyNokiaBlog.com.
Sent in by an anonymous tipster, so the information has to be taken with a pinch of salt, the new phone will supposedly come with better specs than the already rumoured Sea Ray (yes it’s all a bit wishy washy isn’t it).

Among a host of other things, Google is also a mighty successful browser vendor, what with both its desktop and mobile browsers occupying the third spot in their respective markets and constantly conquering fresh ground. However, a lot of people are wondering why Google continues to have two separate browsers for the desktop and mobile markets. But soon enough these people will have better things to do, for an effort to port Chrome over to Android now seems to be underway.
According to the Chromium codebase website, Android has been set up as a build target. It will be interesting to see what all features make the transition from the desktop to Android. As you’d expect, not much is known abo...

Intel dives deeper into software. The company confirmed that it has acquired Israel-based Telmap, a developer of navigation software.
Intel did not disclose further details, but it appears as if the company is intending to use Telmap to expand its "mobile software services capabilities".
"Telmap will allow us to provide AppUp developers with great, differentiated location capabilities in the form of a standard set of location-based APIs and software that developers can easily integrate into their AppUp apps," wrote Intel's Peter Biddle in a blog post.

Zune HD is dead confirms Microsoft

Zune HD is dead confirms Microsoft

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft has officially confirmed that its Zune PMPs – including the Zune HD - have been axed, despite having denied yesterday that such a decision about the media players had been made. “We recently announced that, going forward, Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy,” Microsoft’s Zune Player support page claims, “and that we will no longer be producing Zune players”
As we observed yesterday, the Zune HD has gone two years without a refresh; we initially reviewed it back in September 2009. A refresh was tipped for late 2010, but then Microsoft swung its focus to Windows Phone and how it could include both smartphone and media player functionality in one pac...

Xbox 360 fall dashboard video leaked

Xbox 360 fall dashboard video leaked

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

A video has been posted online which shows off the upcoming Xbox 360 dashboard update. The footage is courtesy of a recently leaked software development kit for the 360 that includes the new dashboard, says TG Daily.
It is suspected that an Xbox employee in France somehow obtained a copy of the software. Content in the video is in French and was originally posted by Logic-Sunrise. The soundless clip gives the general public their first look at the dashboard in full motion. Microsoft released some slides of the planned update earlier this year but video certainly provides a richer experience.
The scheduled update will allow users to browse content faster and use the Kinect motion-sensing devi...

Facebook Will Warn You If A Link Contains Malware

Facebook Will Warn You If A Link Contains Malware

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Better late than never, Facebook. The social network has finally added a security layer that scans links posted by your friends, and warns you if the link contains undesirables like viruses, trojans, phishing attempts, even illegal porn.
It's a long overdue layer of protection for a Web service that boasts more than 750 million users; in recent months we've seen a number of viruses that were spread through links embedded onto people's Facebook profiles: the "death" of Lady Gaga, the fake "See Who Has Viewed Your Profile" application, and fake announcements sent from the Facebook Team .
But on Monday, Facebook announced that it has subscribed to Websense's ThreatSeeker Cloud, which scans bill...

The Crazy 64-Core Processor That Wants to Be in Your Smartphone

The Crazy 64-Core Processor That Wants to Be in Your Smartphone

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesCPU

Chip company Adapteva has a crazy notion: Let's turn our smartphones into veritable supercomputers. And the way to do it? Up the ante in processing power. Not with just dual-core or quad-core processors. No, their Epiphany IV chip has a monstrous 64 cores.
The Epiphany IV isn't a system-on-a-chip like, say, the Apple A5 or even the new NVIDIA Kal-El chips. Rather, it's a co-processor that'll work alongside the chips that already power our phones to provide up to now unheard of power. The idea is to accelerate and enhance processes like gesture recognition and facial recognition, and perhaps create a few new experiences in the process.
Some perspective. The iPad's A5 provides roughly 1.5 giga...

Samsung Galaxy S II is the king of Android sales in the UK

Samsung Galaxy S II is the king of Android sales in the UK

Posted on Oct 04, 2011 by MG1

This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise when you consider the fact that Samsung has moved more than 10 million Galaxy S II units worldwide, but the Galaxy S II is the top selling Android smartphone in the UK.
The Galaxy S II is the best-selling smartphone ever produced by Samsung. With its 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display, dual-core 1.2GHz Exynos processor and an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p HD video recording capabilities what’s not to love?
There was one point in September, the third week of the month, where the Galaxy S II was purchased with a contract more than any other Android manufacturer in the entire country. That is domination when you consider the competition that Samsung is con...
