Schmidt says Google won't screw up Android with Motorola acquisition
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid
When Google acquired Motorola over the summer, the biggest concern was that the relationship balance would shift away from the other manufacturers. Google reassured us that Motorola wouldn’t automatically be first in line to work on Nexus handsets, and Google ex-CEO (now Chairman) Eric Schmidt recently reiterated the sentiment in an interview.
“The Android ecosystem is the No. 1 priority, and that we won’t do anything with Motorola, or anybody else by the way, that would screw up the dynamics of that industry. We need strong, hard competition among all the Android players. We won’t play favorites in the way people are concerned about.”
That’s nice to hear and all, but I could hardly blame ot...

Nokia to axe 3,500 jobs, shutter plant in Romania
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
Nokia has announced that it will be cutting 3,500 jobs from its payroll and closing a plant in Romania as part of the second restructuring of the company in six months.
Nokia will be closing a plant in Romania that had 2,200 employees. A further 1,300 will be cut from its Location & Commerce business unit, which includes Navteq, the mapping software company that Nokia owns. The company says that it is evaluating the future of plants in Finland, Mexico, and Hungary, and that further job cuts would come next year.
The 3,500 jobs cut are in addition to the 4,000 that Nokia announced were being dropped back in April.

T-Mobile joins Samsung in court fight against Apple
Like UnlikeFiled in: SamsungAppleT-Mobile
According to a recent court filing, T-Mobile has taken sides with Samsung in the company's court battle with Apple. T-Mobile contends that an injunction against the sale of Samsung products in the U.S. would harm the carrier and its customers.
T-Mobile's primary concern is with holiday sales, as it claims that "at this late date, T-Mobile could not find comparable replacement products for the 2011 holiday season." T-Mobile's holiday marketing campaigns prominently feature the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S II smartphone and Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet, both of which are in danger of being banned in the U.S. if Apple is awarded an injunction.
T-Mobile is the second carrier to take sides with Samsung, f...

Apple, Facebook could be good friends during iPhone 5 event
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
There is a lot of scuttlebutt going around that Apple and Facebook could make a major announcement during the Oct. 4 iPhone 5 announcement that could create much deeper ties between the two tech powerhouses.
Apple and Facebook have reportedly been at odds for a while, as Apple wanted Facebook integration with Ping but said that the social network’s terms were “onerous.” It’s unclear if Facebook could have saved the ill-fated Ping but it definitely could have helped. Additionally, Facebook and Microsoft have a very cushy relationship (Microsoft invested very early on) and there’s still no love lost between Apple and Microsoft.
Mashable is reporting that Apple and Facebook also had a bit of a ...

iPhone 4S May Be a Significant Upgrade to the Current iPhone 4
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesAppleiPhone 4s
Word is that two iPhone models are going to be announced during Apple’s event tomorrow: a brand new iPhone 5, and an iPhone 4S, which was suspected to be a slightly upgraded version of the current iPhone 4. However, it might be receiving a bigger dose of treatment than just minor bumps in specs.
BGR seems to believe that the coming iPhone 4S “ is going to be a pretty substantial bump as opposed to just an incremental update, as many are speculating.” While BGR doesn’t get into specifics, or tell us things we didn’t already know, it sounds like we’re in for more than what we’ve been expecting:

Kodak rolls out Playfull Waterproof rugged pocket video cam
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamcordersKODAKPLAYFULL Waterproof
Kodak picked Friday to show a different take on its pocket camcorders. The Playfull Waterproof is a cousin to the original Playfull that trades some performance for hardening against conditions. Although it drops from 1080p down to 720p, it can survive underwater depths of up to 10 feet for two hours, or enough to fill much of the sometimes bundled 4GB SDHC card.

Samsung Galaxy S II now available at AT&T
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II AT&T
Now available online and in AT&T's stores (in the morning, that is), is the carrier's version of the Samsung Galaxy S II. Unlike the Sprint and T-Mobile versions, both of which are equipped with a 4.52 Super AMOLED display, the AT&T variant has a smaller 4.3 inch screen. Under the hood of this unit is the dual-core 1.2GHz Exynos processor also found in the Sprint model. When we put this handset through its paces, it scored a mind-numbing 3,733 on the Quadrant Benchmark test. The phone is available for a price of $199.99 after a signed 2-year contract.

T-Mobile reps have a ton of work ahead of them this month and next. A leaked calendar shows all of the things that employees of the nation's fourth largest carrier have to do in October. The first thing, not even mentioned in any of the leaked documents, is to answer calls from angry customers calling to find out why the carrier is the only one of the top four mobile operators in the U.S. not to offer the Apple iPhone. Earlier Saturday, we showed you Radio Shack's inventory system which displayed versions of the iPhone 5 for Verizon, AT&T and Sprint.

Sony Ericsson lends hand to FreeXperia devs, shows love for CyanogenMod 7.1
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSony Ericsson
Turns out, Sony Ericsson is really coming around to the understanding that Android phones are not a one-size-fits-all proposition. After taking notice of the FreeXperia team's tireless efforts to bring CyanogenMod 7.1 to certain SE devices, the company is now "pulling a Samsung" by lending its support to the cause. The firm has provided the group with approximately 20 phones, along with debugged and rebuilt camera library binaries to ensure a proper user experience. Not stopping there, Sony Ericsson hopes to make these bits available to all developers under a special EULA in the near future. Of course, the company continues to remind its users that it doesn't specifically condone unlocking t...

Walmart undercuts Amazon, charges $148.88 for the AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungGalaxy S II AT&T
In the old days, there used to be competition among brick and mortar stores like Macy's, Gimbels, Sears and E.J. Korvette's. Now, there is extremely fierce battles between discount stores like Walmart and online retailers like Amazon. Of course, back in the days of Korvette's, a smartphone would have been considered magic. A device that fits in the palm of your hand that could make phone calls would have seemed hard enough to believe, but throw in all the media content and data that today's smartphones bring to you, and the speeds at which this information becomes available in the palm of your hand, and it all would seem like science fiction.
