Samsung breakthrough could turn your window pane into a big ol' LED

Samsung breakthrough could turn your window pane into a big ol' LED

Samsung's quest for transparency won't end with laptops, apparently. Today, the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology announced that its engineers have successfully created "single crystalline Gallium Nitride on amorphous glass substrates" -- an achievement that would allow the manufacturer to produce jumbo-sized LEDs from normal glass, including window panes. Samsung says this scaled-up approach will allow them to lower production costs relative to most LED manufacturers, which rely on sapphire, rather than glass substrates. And, whereas most Gallium Nitride (GaN) LEDs on the market measure just two inches in size, Sammy's technique could result in displays about 400 times larger. "In te...

Sony A77 and A65 'delayed by flood'

Sony A77 and A65 'delayed by flood'

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Sources at Sony suggest that the reason for the shipping delay of the A77 and A65 cameras is a flood emergency in Thailand, where the cameras are manufactured.
Tokyo-based Sony spokesman Yasuhiro Okada said that the company's digital camera and lens factory in Thailand hasn't suffered major damage from the floods, but the transport system is out, and most of the workers can't reach the factory.
SonyStore.com has removed the pre-order option for the cameras from its website, Sony UK says the cameras are temporary unavailable and Sony Germany and Sony France say that shipment will start in mid-November.

It looks like Intel has concrete plans with its SSD lineup moving into 2012. A roadmap slide sourced by VR-Zone reveals that its main SSD lines feature major additions or replacements that will take shape by the third quarter of 2012. To begin with the enterprise-grade 700 Series, Intel will have launched SSD 720 "Ramsdale" family of PCI-Express SSDs with SLC NAND flash memory, and SSD 520 "Cherryville", a successor of SSD 510; by the end of 2011. These products will lead the lineup through, with no changes in the first quarter of 2012.
In 2012, Intel will launch "Ramsdale MLC" PCI-Express SSD, a variant of Ramsdale that uses MLC-HET NAND flash memory, that increases capacities, while offer...

Next to AMD Intel has recently confirmed its plans to sell special kits of the high-performance Sandy Bridge-E processors that in addition of the CPU will also include an Intel branded closed loop liquid cooler.
This is the first time that the chip maker will bundle any of its processors with a water cooling solution.
In addition to selling the liquid cooler as part of a kit, Intel also plans to release this solution separately (also a premier for the company), in order to address other platform as well.

Kindle Fire Already Drawing Patent Lawsuits

Kindle Fire Already Drawing Patent Lawsuits

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG3

The Kindle Fire isn’t even due to ship to consumers for another month, but already it has attracted its first patent suit. Smartphone Technologies LLC, which as far as we can tell doesn’t actually make anything, has sued Amazon for infringing on four of its patents. These patents seem to describe operating a touchscreen device by tapping on icons; apparently that’s a real patent.

Motorola, Verizon holding special event Oct. 18 - Droid Razr?

Motorola, Verizon holding special event Oct. 18 - Droid Razr?

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Verizon and Motorola have a strong relationship, as Moto was the first handset to kick off the uber-popular Droid lineup and the two companies are teaming up again for a special event Oct. 18. The invitation doesn’t give away much but we’re expecting some nice hardware.
The invitation simply says, “Faster. Thinner. Smarter. Stronger.” on it and if I were betting dollars to doughnuts, I’d say we’re going to see the Droid Razr. Most of you out there should remember how cool the original Motorola Razr was (at least the design) but the rumors on the new one suggest we’re in for a treat.
While we probably won’t get the clamshell design, we should be getting a Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread), a qHD sc...

Nokia Tries To Play It Cool With New Dubstep Ringtone

OK, Nokia, we get it: you want to be cool. The Nokia/Monster headphones spotted a few days back was a start, but what better way to attract a hip young crowd than to jazz up your iconic jingle with some dubstep?
In fairness, Nokia didn’t actually design the thing themselves. Instead, they launched a contest last September where they asked people to submit fresh takes on Grande Valse, the Spanish guitar tune that’s been burned into every Nokia user’s brain since 1994.
The Finnish company received over 6,000 entries (some of which weren’t even ringtones, apparently), and a panel of 7 judges sifted through all of them to find a winner.
Valerio Alessandro Sizzi’s dubstep remix took top honors, a...

Motorola Droid X2 support page talks about the Android 2.3.4 Update

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Well what do you know, Verizon and Motorola are preparing to launch an update for the Droid X2. We’ve no idea when that will exactly happen — as far as I know you may be getting it while reading this — but since the update already got a dedicated page at Verizon’s website (PDF file is here), I assume this will happen sooner rather than later.

Danish firm unveils a mobile phone that lasts forever

Danish firm unveils a mobile phone that lasts forever

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

You’ve probably heard about some projects that aim to make eco-friendly disposable mobile phones. Here’s something completely different – a mobile phone that never will need to be replaced. Danish company Æsir is behind this product, which we could also call somewhat eco-friendly presuming such a device won’t be replaced as often as “regular” phones.
Unfortunately we don’t know the price, but I doubt we’re talking about a cheap device, considering the quality of its parts. Similarly, we don’t have the specs sheet, but yet again I will presume this is a basic feature phone.

A third party app called iGotYa did exactly what it was designed to do, resulting in the capture and arrest of 23 year old Brian Chatoo, accused of stealing an Apple iPhone 4 out of the pocket of a woman in Queens, 31 year old Erum Malik. Earlier in the week, Malik had downloaded the iGotYa app on to her phone. The software is designed to use the front-facing camera to take a picture of anyone trying to unlock the device with a incorrect password. and then email the picture to the owner of the phone. The app is available online from Cydia and costs $5.99. It is not available through iTunes.

The iPhone 4S, iOS 5 were made with gamers in mind

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Later this week, iOS gamers will have a lot to take in as both the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 will launch. The iPhone 4S will have Apple’s A5 dual-core chip running its innards which promise a 7x graphical improvement over the iPhone 4 and many of the benefits of iOS 5 are things gamers will gladly embrace, such as the new notifications center, the use of iCloud for games, and some much needed improvements to Apple’s Game Center service.
So without further ado, let’s get to the reasons why if you’re an iOS gamer, you should be excited about both the iPhone 4S and iOS 5.

Samsung Galaxy S III image allegedly appears on leaked slide

Now that it's almost the middle of October and the Apple iPhone 4S is setting records before getting released, the Samsung Galaxy S II is a couple of days away from getting launched on its third and last major U.S. carrier, and the Google Nexus Prime is soon to be announced, you would think that we would have a little time for a breather. But instead, Phandroid was sent a picture of a leaked photograph of a slide that allegedly shows off an image and the specs of the Samsung Galaxy S III.
According to the slide, the phone will have under its hood the recently announced Samsung Exynos 4212 which will run at 1.8GHz with 2GB of RAM. The back camera will be a 12MP shooter with a backlit CMOS sen...

BlackBerry Internet Outage Hits Europe, Middle East, Africa

BlackBerry Internet Outage Hits Europe, Middle East, Africa

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

RIM seems to be learning very quickly that when it rains, it pours. Word of a BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) outage quickly began making the rounds this morning, leaving (once) loyal customers in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East without email and web access.
This is the second outage RIM has dealt with in as many months: their popular BBM service went down this past September, shortly after the company released their disappointing quarterly financials.
For what it’s worth, it’s business as usual for corporate users as BlackBerry Enterprise services don’t seem to have suffered the same fate.
In usual RIM fashion, they’ve acknowledged the issue through their official Twitter account, but...
