Hackers reverse engineer Trojan used by German Police
Like UnlikeEuropean hacking group Chaos Computer Club claims to have successfully reverse engineered samples of German Police's lawful intercept malware, known as Quellen-TKÜ, finding that besides eavesdropping on Skype conversations it is also capturing screenshots and logging keystrokes.
The trojan was first disclosed in court documents from 2007 and was designed with the primary task of assisting German Police overcome Skype encryption where an intercept warrant had been granted by a judge. The German government endorsed the usage of Quellen-TKÜ to legally wiretap internet communications only, but the hacker group's analysis of several samples received shows the malware goes well beyond its intende...

Anonymous Takes Down NYSE Site for Two Sad, Short Minutes
Like UnlikeEveryone's favorite hacktivists, Anonymous took down the New York Stock Exchange's site today for two terrifyingly boring minutes.
The group used a DDoS attack to briefly knock the site offline as a show of solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protestors. Trading wasn't affected while the site was down. The group posted a YouTube video in early October warning that the attack would take place. This warning probably gave the NYSE time to bolster their site's defenses against the Anonymous threat.
The attack wasn't popular amongst the majority of Anonymous members. Many thought that the attack would create bad press for the Occupy Wall Street movement. They also might have realized that the ...

ISPs to block access to porn websites
Like UnlikeThe UK government is set to announce a plan by which the UK's four major internet service providers will block consumers' access to porn in order to protect children from stumbling across sexual imagery online.
BT, Virgin Media, Sky and Talk Talk, have all agreed to offer a service whereby users can opt to have stringent parental controls in place.
Some may require customers to 'opt in' to view explicit websites, leading to a potentially awkward phone conversation for consumers when changing providers. ("Hello, BT? Please turn my porn back on.")
It's not clear who will decide which sites will be blocked nor how they will decide this.
Update: Virgin Media explains that the move is to make par...

How Microsoft Reduces Memory Use in Windows 8
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
For the second time in Windows history, a new release of Windows will not increase its memory system requirements, but rather it will remain the same or even go down. Windows 7 required a minimum of 1 GB, the same as Windows Vista, which also asked for 1 GB. Windows 8 is likely to stay at that level or even drop slightly as the OS apparently is much more considerate when acquiring available memory resources.

Roku announces $50 LT model, will add HBO Go streaming to all of its boxes this month
Like UnlikeFiled in: Roku
That cheaper, purpler, Roku LT we spied passing through the FCC and beta testing is official, and will hit retail shelves for just $50 next month. It's only $10 less than the also-720p-limited Roku 2 HD, but that model isn't sold everywhere and if you're just snagging a box to watch some Netflix you probably won't notice the missing Bluetooth and SD card reader. No matter which model is selected, starting next month viewers will be able to watch HBO Go streaming content on the Roku family of hardware. Cord cutters that have dropped pay TV entirely still don't have access, but Roku CEO Anthony Wood reports around 80 percent of Roku owners still have cable or satellite, so after adding Epix an...

The U.S. Government Demands that Google Hand Over Email Data from a Wikileaks Volunteer
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
According to NBC Bay Area, the Federal Government issued a secret court order to Google and ISP provider Sonic.net to handover account data from Jacob Applebaum, a Wikileaks volunteer who they believe was involved in the leaking of classified docs.
No party involved with the matter is saying much, but it brings back an issue which has lingered around Google for the better part of five years. With all the data they hang onto, there's always the threat that some governing body will demand to see it, despite Google's loose promise to keep data somewhat private. Whether or not Google can fend off, or even attempt to fend off, these court orders will be worth paying attention to, as it will give ...

Virus reportedly slamming US Predator drones
Like UnlikeThe US military is trying to deal with a keystroke logger virus that has infected the virtual cockpits of its Predator and Reaper drones. The virus is logging the pilots’ keystrokes on missions being flown over Afghanistan and other tactical areas. The virus, which was first detected around two weeks ago by the military’s Host-based Security System in Creech Nevada, has not affected missions but has resisted attempts at removal.
“We keep wiping it off, and it keeps coming back,” a source familiar with the network infection says. “We think it’s benign. But we just don’t know.”
At this point, no one is certain how the virus infected the drone networks. Accidental installation remains a possibi...

Google+ loses 60 per cent of traffic
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google+ has seen a 60 per cent loss in web traffic since it opened its gates to the general public on 20 September. The big G's attempt at social networking has, despite initial spikes of interest, seen a gradual decline in traffic.
Google+ remained, until 20 September, an invite only affair, the idea being that it would help drum up anticipation and interest in the site. Once the website did open its doors to the public it saw a 1200 per cent traffic spike in just a single day, but since then it has dropped 60 per cent.
To put that in perspective, say for example you had 100 people using your website initially and you saw a 1200 per cent increase, then you would have 1300 people make use o...

Microsoft employees claim to be working on next Xbox
Like UnlikeFiled in: Game ConsolesMicrosoftXBOX One
I think we all knew when the Nintendo Wii U was unveiled back at E3 that other next gen consoles would be coming too. It’s also safe to say that shortly after one version of a game console launches, the next is being worked on. When some workers at Microsoft hint they are working on the next Xbox, take it with a grain of salt. They probably could have said they were working in it years ago.
Over the last several months were have heard a few rumors that Microsoft was at work on the Xbox 720. This is the first “confirmation” from someone claiming to work on the project that another console is coming. The tip comes from the resume pages of some Microsoft workers on LinkedIn. I guess someone did...

Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAcer
And the Ultrabooks have arrived! We just got word that the Acer Aspire S3 will go on sale in the US and Canada this week for $899 -- making it the first pinch-thin, MacBook Air competitor to hit the market, landing ahead of competing models from Toshiba, Lenovo and ASUS. To recap, this 2.98-pound aluminum beaut has a 13.3-inch (1366 x 768) panel, is rated for six hours (or 50 standby days!) of battery life and promises to wake from sleep in a mere two seconds. For the money, you'll get an ultra low voltage Core i5 CPU, 4GB of RAM and 20GB of solid-state storage combined with a 320GB HDD. No word yet on how many additional configs will be available, though Acer did confirm that this $899 vers...

Netflix backtracks on Qwikster, will keep DVDs and streaming under the same URL
Like UnlikeThe Netflix Contrition Tour 2011 continues today, as the company announced today that it won't be spinning off DVD-by-mail rentals into a new company called Qwikster. While the plan for DVD operations to be separated internally appears to still be under way (no word yet on the promised videogame rental option), for customers things will stay the same, with one login and one website. While the retreat will probably prompt even more speculation about the company's true plans, CEO Reed Hastings has issued yet another apology to customers, admitting Netflix may have moved too fast this time.
Another sticky issue that's not so easily dealt with is the recent pricing change that took effect last m...
