Apple iPhone 4S gets stacked with an iPhone 4, Samsung could sue on the antenna design

Apple iPhone 4S gets stacked with an iPhone 4, Samsung could sue on the antenna design

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

A Vietnamese newspaper has gotten a hold on the iPhone 4S, and has snapped a few photos of it stacked up with an iPhone 4 to illustrate the design differences. They are subtle, but changes in the outer chassis do exist, and will most likely lead to new cases needed for the iPhone 4S, since the dimensions of the new iPhone are slightly different than those of the fourth generation.
The biggest change besides the slightly taller chassis of the iPhone 4S (4.54" vs 4.5") are the notches in the steel band surrounding the iPhone 4S. Apple's engineers have redesigned the reception area after the "you're holding it wrong" drama last year, and have moved the notch from near the headphone jack on top ...

Verizon introduces platform-neutral Private Applications Store for Business

Verizon introduces platform-neutral Private Applications Store for Business

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Verizon Wireless

CTIA 2011 has already kicked off with an impressive start bringing us five new smartphones from AT&T, and now Verizon has introduced a new Private Applications Store for Business (PASB) - a platform-neutral app store combining choice and corporate control on apps. The aim is to help businesses build their mobile office while keeping security and control at high levels. The carrier will demonstrate the app store today.
The PASB allows businesses to manage both in-house and third party apps on corporate or employee smartphones and tablets, which are either behind or not a company’s firewall.
“Our Private Applications Store for Business is a win-win for employers and employees as it provides en...

Samsung Galaxy Note hitting Australia in early 2012

Samsung Galaxy Note hitting Australia in early 2012

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

U.S. won’t be the only developed country that won’t get Samsung Galaxy Note this year, with Samsung Australia saying that their smartphone-tablet will be launched “by early 2012.” The information comes from PC World, which quoted the company’s spokesperson saying: “Essentially, we do want to bring it to Australia but it won’t be until next year.”
Of course, if you want it badly this year, you could import it from Europe where Sammy’s device is expected to start selling at some point in November. Actually that’s the launch date for the United Kingdom, but it’s safe to bet other EU countries will get “their Notes” in the same period.

BlueStacks Releases App Player And Cloud Connect Service To Let You Run Android Apps On Your PC

BlueStacks Releases App Player And Cloud Connect Service To Let You Run Android Apps On Your PC

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Back in May, BlueStacks raised $7.5 million in series A financing from Andreessen Horowitz, Ignition Ventures, Radar Partners, Redpoint Ventures, and more. This was all pre-launch. Why that kind of money for a startup that hasn’t launched a product yet? Because approximately 630 million new Windows PCs will be shipped by the end of this year, and because BlueStacks has designed downloadable software that will enable Android apps to run on (hopefully) all of them.
And today, to put that money where its mouth is, BlueStacks is announcing the release of the first products that will be a part of its ongoing quest to do just that. For starters, the company is making available the alpha version of...

Apple iPhone 4S Safari browser benchmarked, a photo gets taken with the new 8MP camera

Apple iPhone 4S Safari browser benchmarked, a photo gets taken with the new 8MP camera

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

In out Apple iPhone 4 browser benchmarks we were getting around 45-49 000 scores on BrowserMark, which was only slightly below the browsers on dual-core handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S II, although loading times of pages with Safari were slower in comparison with the multicores despite lack of plugins like Adobe Flash.
Now someone with an early access to the iPhone 4S has posted BrowserMark results of 89567, which is almost double the achievements of Safari on the iPhone 4. So, yes, surfing the Internets will be much quicker on the new dual-core iPhone 4S than before. SunSpider, which measures Java performance, returned results that are 3x better than on the iPhone 4. Of course, these res...

CTIA Fall 2011: What to expect

CTIA Fall 2011: What to expect

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

CTIA 2011 is the bi-annual expo that brought us the HTC EVO 3D this spring, but another, fall edition, is coming up soon. What should you expect? Maybe it would be better to start with what you shouldn’t expect and that’s a Samsung Nexus Prime announcement. This CTIA, which kicks off tomorrow officially and goes until the 13th, was all centered around the Nexus Prime (at least from our viewpoint), so by cancelling their joint event, Samsung and Google pretty much ruined the show.
Officially, both companies said the cancellation is made to pay tribute to Steve Jobs, but coincidentally, Samsung has reportedly scheduled a new date - October 27th in London, falling on the same day and place whe...

AT&T starts CTIA off right by introducing five new smartphones to its Android lineup

AT&T starts CTIA off right by introducing five new smartphones to its Android lineup

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by MG1

At CTIA last March, AT&T stole the show by announcing its intent to purchase T-Mobile US. This time around the news is a bit more modest, but the company is still hoping to give us a bit of a shock by introducing a litany of new handsets right on time for the holiday season. The carrier promised the release of 12 Android devices throughout the course of the year, and this week's announcement pushes the 2011 running count to 19. Not too shabby. Naturally, we're looking for quality more than quantity, so we couldn't wait to dig into the devices that are coming out. Check out all five after the break, along with a quick video teaser.

Square ditches $1,000 per week limits, has 800,000 merchants processing $2 billion per year

Square ditches $1,000 per week limits, has 800,000 merchants processing $2 billion per year

Posted on Oct 11, 2011 by Immortal

Until now, when a merchant using Square racked up over $1,000 in payments in the course of a week, everything above that limit was held for a period of time, ranging from just a few hours up to a whole month. As of today, roughly a year and a half after the company's founding, that restriction has been lifted. Now all payments will be processed immediately and merchants will have access to the funds the next day. Square also announced that, in the year or so since it started offering its wares to the public, it has signed up 800,000 merchants who have processed over $2 billion in transactions. After ditching the $0.15 per-transaction charge and with the $1,000 per-week restriction limit lift...

Toshiba AT200 tablet squeezes through 7.7mm gap at the FCC

Toshiba AT200 tablet squeezes through 7.7mm gap at the FCC

Posted on Oct 10, 2011 by MG1

News about Toshiba's ultra-thin AT200 tablet has been patience-testingly slow since we went hands-on at IFA a month ago. We did recently hear that a Japanese variant of the Regza-branded ten-incher -- confusingly called the AT700 -- is on schedule for release there in December and we're hoping that the US version will arrive in time for Christmas too. Encouraging, then, to see that it's passed unscathed through the FCC's electromagnetic rendition of Wipeout with WiFi and Bluetooth in tow. The submitted paperwork also reveals a little extra detail: the tablet is at least partly manufactured by Quanta, the same OEM guys behind the Kindle Fire and the BlackBerry PlayBook. With the tablet wars l...

Microsoft Skype buy approved by EU

Microsoft Skype buy approved by EU

Posted on Oct 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Microsoft

It appears that last May’s Microsoft acquisition of Skype has finally been approved by the EU. This Friday Microsoft can officially say that, at least in Europe, it’ll be able to purchase Skype for $8.5 billion. The European Commission noted that it found both firms activities “overlapped for video communications, where Microsoft is active through its Windows Live Messenger.” This of course is noted in regards to competition and whether or not there are “competition concerns” in the deal.

Cooler Master launches Silent Pro Hybrid Fanless Series of power supplies

Posted on Oct 10, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cooler Master

Desktop PC power supplies are tough to get excited about, no matter how many features they cram in. But Cooler Master's Silent Pro Hybrid Fanless series is actually pretty alluring. The supply isn't actually "fanless" but it does have a fanless mode that can be used to minimize machine noise, at least until the load crosses the 200W threshold. Add to that a 90-percent efficiency, fully modular cables and a control panel that lets you manually adjust the speed of your system fans and you're looking at quite the compelling product for the DIY desktop enthusiast. As you could have guessed though, all these fancy features don't come cheap. Cooler Master is offering three different models: 850W, ...

Android 4 leak shows Google Music 4.0, Google+ 2.0

Android 4 leak shows Google Music 4.0, Google+ 2.0

Posted on Oct 10, 2011 by MG1

A leak of an Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) build has unearthed two important remade apps. Google Music 4.0 has a much cleaner, streamlined interface more in line with the "holographic" look, Android Police saw. It would have more control over playback with thumbs-up and thumbs-down options along with much larger album art.
The build obtained so far doesn't have the offline caching option, however, leading to worries that Google might have lost rights to storing music offline. It's possible the feature was temporarily disabled for a given build or is waiting for certain other conditions before it comes online.
A further sighting also uncovered the as yet unofficial Google+ 2.0. Interface c...

US Department of Homeland Security developing system to predict criminal intent

US Department of Homeland Security developing system to predict criminal intent

Posted on Oct 10, 2011 by MG1

We're not exactly lacking in opportunities for Minority Report references these days, but sometimes they're just unavoidable. According to a new report from CNET based on documents obtained by the Electronic Privacy Information Center, the US Department of Homeland security is now working on a system dubbed FAST (or Future Attribute Screening Technology) that's designed to identify individuals who are most likely to commit a crime. That's not done with something as simple as facial recognition and background checks, however, but rather algorithms and an array of sensors and cameras that can detect both physiological and behavioral cues that are said to be "indicative of mal-intent." What's m...
