ASRock Shows Off First LGA2011 Micro-ATX Motherboard

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

ASRock showed off pictures of the first socket LGA2011 motherboard in the compact micro-ATX form-factor, the ASRock X79 Extreme4-M Within its small board footprint of 240 x 240 mm, the X79 Extreme4-M offers almost every feature the platform has to offer. To begin with, the LGA2011 socket is powered by an 8-phase VRM that makes use of high-grade solid-state chokes, and driver-MOSFETs. It is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots, two on either sides of the socket. All four expansion slot bays available to the mATX form-factor are made use of, with three PCI-Express 3.0 x16 and one legacy PCI.
The electrical configuration of the three PCI-Express slots appears to be x16, x8, x16 (permanent). The chips...

ASRock X79 Motherboard Headed by Feature-Rich Extreme9 Model

ASRock X79 Motherboard Headed by Feature-Rich Extreme9 Model

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

ASRock's socket LGA2011 motherboard lineup doesn't end with X79 Extreme7 as thought before, the company thinks there's scope for an even more loaded model that's literally bursting with connectivity and expansion features. Enter the X79 Extreme9. This board uses high-grade digital PWM circuitry to power the CPU. It draws power for the CPU VRM from two 8-pin EPS connectors. Unlike the X79 Extreme7, this board features eight DDR3 DIMM slots, two per memory channel. Expansion slots include five PCI-Express 3.0 x16, and a PCIe x1.
Since it completely ran out of room on the main PCB, ASRock put two important connectivity features on a separate (included) addon card, called the ASRock "Game Blast...

Anonymous On a Warpath With Zetas Drug Cartel After Kidnapping Of Group Member

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

After successfully taking out a child porn ring, Anonymous is threatening war on November 5th with Mexico's Zetas drug cartel, after the kidnapping of an Anonymous member from Veracruz.
The video states that if the Mexican drug cartel doesn't free the kidnapped Anonymous member unharmed, the hacking group will release the names, addresses and photos of taxi drivers, journalists and police officers on the payroll of the criminal gang. The video ends with an ultimatum that simply states that they "will always remember this coming November 5th".
Taking out a child porn ring was one very good thing, but challenging serious and violent organised crime is another entirely. Whatever happens Novembe...

One Dude Beats AMD's Overclocking World Record (8.46 GHz!)

One Dude Beats AMD's Overclocking World Record (8.46 GHz!)

Just last month, AMD staged an event to squeeze an amazing 8429.38 MHz out of its FX-8150 processor. The highest-clocked CPU in the world—it was a big production. And now they've been beat by a team of one.
Andre Yang eked out a 32 MHz advantage over AMD's team—but he did it without the sponsorship, camera crew, and most importantly, the teamwork. All it took, TechPowerUp reports, is 2 GB of RAM, an ASUS Crosshair V Formula motherboard, and a scalding hot 2 volts of electricity pumped into the chip. Like AMD's official record, Yang's overclocked masterpiece was running with almost all of its cores disabled to prevent it from melting through his table and down to the center of the earth.

RIM Facility Helps India Monitor Messages, Email

Research in Motion has set up a small facility in India to help the government lawfully monitor some of the encrypted data that travels over its servers.
Citing “people familiar with the matter,” a Wall Street Journal report said the facility has satisfied an ongoing disagreement between RIM and the Indian government for the time being, but officials still want more access to BlackBerry email and instant messages.
Last year, the government threatened to shut down RIM’s services completely in the country if RIM did not offer a solution to let it intercept messages on BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Internet Service email. The government gave RIM several deadlines to come up with a s...

Samsung: Australian Tab ban should be lifted

Samsung: Australian Tab ban should be lifted

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Samsung

Samsung has appealed for the Australian ban on its Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablets to be overturned.
Citing errors of law, Samsung's legal team has insisted that the ban over alleged patent infringement is wrongful, despite a judge agreeing that Apple's intellectual property had been infringed.
The injunction was a preliminary one, but Samsung's lawyer Neil Young insisted that it was based on "irrelevant considerations".
Fight
The ban was handed down on 13 October, to the dismay of Samsung, who immediately indicated that they would fight against it.
Apple believes that Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 infringes on three of its patents, and has already rejected a deal offered by Samsung over the Aus...

Google TV 2.0 adds Android Market access

Google TV 2.0 adds Android Market access

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Google has announced version 2.0 of its Google TV software, bringing a Honeycomb flavoured Android experience to the table.
The key new addition to the Google TV setup is the Android Market, although not all apps are supported for obvious reasons. There is, of course, no GPS or telephony based apps on offer and because your TV isn't a ruddy great touchscreen (if it is, you're lucky) then the majority of touch based apps won't work either. So that's most of them.
But the Big G has promised that "50 developers have seeded the Market with cool and useful apps for the TV" and that it is "excited to see the number of apps grow".
The new version has been given a more simple UI with customisable ho...

Will RIM's Buy Two, Get One Free Offer Boost PlayBook Sales?

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Research in Motion seems to be trying everything to entice people to buy its BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. In hopes of driving sales, BlackBerry business customers who buy two PlayBooks from an authorized reseller will get one free from now until December 31, BGR first reported.
RIM will also give customers who purchase two PlayBooks one free accessory for each device. They can choose from a black leather sleeve, a charging pad, or an six-foot HDMI cable if they join in the promotion.
The company has struggled to sell the PlayBook, and the floundering tablet took another hit this week when RIM announced that it will delay the launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 until February 2012. Until...

Frequent patent attacker Mosaid bought, stops Wi-LAN buyout

Frequent patent attacker Mosaid bought, stops Wi-LAN buyout

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

A common source of mass patent violation lawsuits, Mosaid, was bought out on Friday by private equity group Sterling Partners. The deal, worth about $590 million Canadian ($594 million US), will see Sterling take on the task of managing 2,000 Nokia patents as well as the others that Mosaid owns. Both Nokia and its new mobile OS partner need to approve the deal, which should close if approved in December of January.
The acquisition of the Ottawa, Canada company was likely made under the threat of a hostile takeover from Mosaid's local neighbor, Wi-LAN. The rival has tried twice to make offers. Wi-LAN had still left an offer on the table, but Mosaid's board was unanimously urging share owners ...

How To Activate Google+ in Google Apps

How To Activate Google+ in Google Apps

When Google opened Google+, the search giant's social network, to the public, it was the exclusive plaything of Google personal account holders. That changed with yesterday's announcement that Google Apps, the company's Web-based application suite for businesses and organizations, is now compatible with Google+.
Google Apps users now have access to the same feature set as other Google+ social networkers "and more," according to Google. With Google+, you can share information and engage in conversations with "Circles." In addition, you can video chat, screen share, and edit Google Docs with multiple friends and colleagues via "Hangouts with extras."
Naturally, if you've already built a signif...

Motorola has shipped 100,000 Xoom tablets in Q3

Motorola has shipped 100,000 Xoom tablets in Q3

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Motorola shipped only 100,000 Xoom tablets in the third quarter of the year. The sad number comes from Motorola Mobility’s third quarter results and is revealing about the fate of Android tablets. It should also be noted that the company hasn’t sold 100,000 in the last trimester, the number is for shipments only.
And when compared with Apple’s iPad? The number is almost discouraging - the iPad recorded sales of 11 million in the third quarter of the year.
On the positive note, though, we recently heard that the 10.1-inch Honeycomb tablet by Motorola is expected to get updated to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, but there’s no set timeline. The tablet started receiving LTE under an upgrade pro...

Now that you've had a few months to tinker with your latest and greatest, we're interested to hear how you'd tweak things if given the keys to Waterloo. Would you make it look a bit more like this? Change up the screen? Toss that chrome ring around the edge? Chunk it to another carrier? Go on and get creative in comments below, but keep it civil, cool?

Walmart makes boo boo by showing HTC Hero instead of HTC EVO Design 4G in flyer

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

You might recall the HTC Hero that was released by Sprint back in October 2009, just a few days before the Motorola DROID started Androidmania. The Hero was evolving from the T-Mobile G1 and certainly looks nothing like HTC's current lineup of Android handsets. That is why it seems strange that whomever was checking the copy for Walmart's latest circular let a picture of the 2 year old phone sneak in above copy for the brand new HTC EVO Design 4G.
The HTC Hero variant that landed on Sprint in October 2009 introduced Sense UI to the U.S. and had a elongated look with a trackball on the bottom of the phone. Of course, the HTC EVO Design 4G does not have the trackball and is currently available...
