Hewlett Packard over the weekend began sending emails to customers who signed up for updates on the TouchPad tablet to let them know the company is officially out of stock. Whatever remaining units HP had were sent off to retailers, but as far as HP's online inventory, it's been "depleted," HP said. For those of you still interested in snagging one of these fire sale tablets, Best Buy is one of the few places you'll be able to pick one up without an aftermarket price hike, albeit with a one very big caveat.
You have to purchase a new HP or Compaq laptop, desktop, or all-in-one computer. Starting on November 1 (tomorrow) at BestBuy.com and November 4 in Best Buy stores, a 32GB TouchPad tablet...

The myTouch is equipped with a 3.8-inch display, a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, a 5-megapixel camera capable of recording 720p video and Android 2.3 Gingerbread. HTC releases Q3 earnings report: profit up 68 percent, shipments soar 93 percent

It's been another stellar quarter for the folks over at HTC. According to the company's Q3 earnings report, released today, net income rose to NT$18.68 billion (about $624.6 million) this quarter -- a 68 percent increase over Q3 2010 and a seven percent bump over last quarter, when HTC reported record profits. Revenue, meanwhile, rose by 79 percent on the year to NT$135.8 billion (around $4.54 billion), which the manufacturer attributed to "strong brand recognition, leading product portfolio and expanded distribution channels." On a regional level, HTC saw the strongest growth in China, where sales increased by a factor of nine over the past year. This undoubtedly helped the company boost ha...

Nvidia Preps GF110-based GeForce GTX 560 Ti‎ Upgrade

Nvidia Preps GF110-based GeForce GTX 560 Ti‎ Upgrade

Posted on Nov 01, 2011 by MG1

This new Ti will, if VR-Zone is right, be based on the GF110 chip, which makes it a close relative to the 570 and 580 models. It will also mean a drop of the current GF114.
The publication reports that the new 560 Ti will essentially be a 570 with 14 (and one disabled) streaming multiprocessor with a total of 448 cores, up from the current 384. It is more than likely that the clock speed will be below that of the 570. Expect to see the 320-bit memory interface with 56 TMUs and 40 ROPs.
The likely performance gain is pure speculation at this time, but I will make an educated guess that the card will be consuming more power than the 170 W of the current 560 Ti and move closer to the 219 W of t...

ARMv8 detailed: 64-bit architecture, AppliedMicro first in line

Thought Windows on ARM was snazzy? Have a gander at this. The outfit's forthcoming ARMv8 architecture, the first ARM architecture to include a 64-bit instruction set, has just been detailed, with a goal to expand the reach of ARM processor-based solutions "into consumer and enterprise applications where extended virtual addressing and 64-bit data processing are required." The ARMv8 architecture consists of two main execution states -- AArch64 and AArch32 -- and we're apt to see the real benefits hit high-end servers first. The ARMv8 architecture specifications are available now to partners under license, with the company planning to disclose processors based on ARMv8 during 2012, with consum...

Lenovo's ThinkCentre M77 Desktop is Built for Business

Lenovo's ThinkCentre M77 Desktop is Built for Business

Posted on Nov 01, 2011 by MG1

You won't find any swirling LEDs or one-touch overclocking buttons on Lenovo's new ThinkCentre M77 desktop. Instead, this machine is all business, "crafted for professionals" looking for a "powerful, secure, energy efficient yet easy to use computer to tackle everyday office tasks," Lenovo says. Sounds like a snoozer until you realize it's (optionally) powered by an AMD FX Series processor and up to 16GB of DDR3 memory.
"Previously, this level of processing performance has only been available in premium PCs," said Tom Shell, vice president and general manager, Commercial Desktop Business Unit, Lenovo. "The ThinkCentre M77 desktop with the new AMD FX Series processors provide mainstream users...

MSI GT780DX Laptop is Chock Full of Gaming Greatness

Posted on Nov 01, 2011 by MG1

The new GT780DX gaming laptop from MSI is being billed as "the ultimate weapon in battle," and one look at the spec sheet shows why. It's a 17-inch notebook outfitted with a second generation Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, Nvidia's near top-of-the-line (in mobile) GeForce GTX 570M discrete graphics with 1.5GB of GDDR5 memory, and supports up to 32GB of DDR3 system memory.
It also has a SteelSeries gaming keyboard baked into the chassis. MSI says the keyboard is more rugged than a standard plank, the Windows key has been moved to the right side to prevent accidentally striking it when you really just mean to duck fire, it has larger Ctrl and Alt keys, and there are five backlight schemes ...

HP may completely shutdown WebOS after all

HP may completely shutdown WebOS after all

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

According to the Guardian, internal HP sources have revealed that the company will be shutting down WebOS. HP had just confirmed yesterday that it will be keeping its PC business, reversing plans to spin-off the PSG division, and although it had insisted back in August that it would continue to support the WebOS software, a complete shutdown of the division looks to be imminent.
There are currently about 500 employees working in the WebOS unit, but several top-level staff have recently left, which is a telling sign. It’s believed that some WebOS staff will be moved to a different division within HP, while others will be laid off. “There’s a 95% chance we all get laid off between now and Nove...

YouTube Pays $100 Million to Channel Hollywood Star Power

YouTube Pays $100 Million to Channel Hollywood Star Power

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

In its bid to compete with traditional cable offerings on even footing, YouTube has reached agreements with more than 100 producers to provide exclusive video content to the site. YouTube is aiming to create dedicated, broadcast-quality channels from these providers—including Reuters, the WSJ, Slate, The Onion, Ashton Kutcher, and Shaquille O'Neal.
According to reports, Google laid out $100 million in advances to the providers and will likely make that money back through—surprise, surprise—ad sales. The Channels will begin coming online next month and will continue to do so throughout 2012. Though, that's assuming Shaq's comedy channel isn't the catalyst that begins the end of the world.

Don't think Roku is sitting back on its laurels after rolling out a slew of new hardware including the Roku 2 family and the new, low end Roku LT. As promised, it has issued a firmware update enabling new gaming options including Pac Man:CE, Galaga, and Angry Birds Seasons. Even if you're committed to Roku's hockey pucks as purely video streamers, there's a new firmware update to correct, among other things, issues that caused a darker than normal image on some displays, WiFi performance, boot performance, readiness for HBO Go, and subtitles on Netflix. Check out Roku's blog for the full list of fixes or just hit the software update section in your settings menu to make sure you have the lat...

Verizon runs HTC Rezound ads early, confirms Beats audio

Verizon runs HTC Rezound ads early, confirms Beats audio

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Verizon on Sunday spoiled HTC's November 3 event by posting ads for the Rezound. While they don't show more than a product shot, they do confirm the Beats Audio connection, including the signature red-corded headphones and red light-up navigation keys. The ads hint the phone might be ready to go soon after the event.
The Rezound, sometimes known as the Vigor, is expected to be HTC's most advanced US phone. It will be a slight spin on the Raider, already available in Canada, and revolve around a very sharp 4.5-inch, 720x1280 screen. A dual-core 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor and LTE-based 4G will also put it at the high end, although Verizon's model will logically use CDMA for voice instead of t...

Panasonic Lumix GX1 Micro Four Thirds camera surfaces in leaked photos

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: CamerasPanasonic

Panasonic just launched a whole new series of Micro Four Thirds lenses a couple of months ago, and it looks like it might soon also have a new Micro Four Thirds camera to take advantage of them. That photo you see above recently turned up on the Mobile01 forums with a bundle of others, showing a hereto unannounced Panasonic Lumix GX1 MFT camera, which looks like it could be a true successor to the GF1 (as opposed to the GF2 and GF3 that moved in a less pro-minded direction). Rumored specs remain a bit light, but the camera apparently has a touchscreen display 'round back, which will likely see a fair bit of use unless you opt for an external EVF. It's also suggested that the camera will be l...

MacBook Air-Like Update to MacBook Pro Line Expected (Again)

MacBook Air-Like Update to MacBook Pro Line Expected (Again)

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

It doesn't seem fair that the MacBook Air line has several features over the MacBook Pro (sleek profile; USB ports on both sides; higher-res screen...). A major design refresh to the Pro line, the first in three years, has been bandied about for months now, but according to Japanese site Macotakara, Apple's definitely working on a skinnier Pro.
Inside sources (presumably at a factory) have been cited, claiming the LCD screens used in the new Pros have finished being developed, though there's no word on what sizes they are. Whether we'll be seeing beefier Pro laptops in the same 11 and 13-inch sizes as the Air, or just in the 15 and 17-inch sizes of the Pro, remains to be seen.
