4G now counted among 'ideal phone features' by 75% of consumers, survey finds
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
It worked. 4G has been marketed so well by wireless carriers and vendors that people want it even if they don’t quite know why. A recent survey conducted by market research and intelligence firm In-Stat found that 75% of respondents listed 4G as one of the features their ideal phone would include. When asked which carrier offered the fastest 4G speeds, most respondents were left stymied. “Although 4G is an important feature for handset buyers, there is a lot of confusion surrounding 4G,” In-Stat analyst Greg Potter said in a statement. Read on for more.
Potter continued, “When survey respondents were asked which carrier offered the fastest 4G speeds, the majority of the respondents either di...

Nokia's strategy for America: Target people new to smartphones

Last week Nokia held their annual Nokia World event in London where they announced 6 new handsets. The last 2 to be unveiled, the Nokia Lumia 710 and the Nokia Lumia 800, were the ones that the entire mobile industry have been eager to see ever since the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer decreed back in February of this year that they’re going to dump Symbian and switch to Windows Phone. To no one’s surprise, Western European countries are going to be the first to get these two devices, while the United States will have to wait until 2012, though no specific details were given. The folks at This is my next spotted a few Verizon Wireless employees at the event, which makes it rather obvious t...

Acer's first venture into Windows Phone arrives in France as the Allegro
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftAcerWindows Phone 7
Remember the Acer W4? After seeing it at IFA 2011, it seems that it's finally ready to make some first impressions, and its blind date is with France. Known officially as the Allegro, Acer's inaugural Windows Phone isn't going over the top in the spec department: it has a 3.6-inch WVGA (800 x 480) display, 1GHz single-core Qualcomm MSM8255 CPU, 8GB internal storage, 5MP rear camera with LED flash and a 1,300mAh battery. However, a unique addition to this €299 ($425) device is a feature called Fast Charge, which allows the Allegro to get juiced up to 2.5 times faster than the rest of the company's lineup. Expect the device to land in France in mid-November with two color options -- white and ...

Android Winning In China, But The Market Is Going Through A Chaotic Phase
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
t the Android Fever panel here at Disrupt Beijing, Wang Hua of Innovation Works, John Lagerling, Director of Android Global Partnerships at Google, and David Chao of DCM. These folks are bullish on Android, noting that there are currently 40 million android phones in country and that China is number three in terms of development kit downloads.
“The Android market in China is going through a chaotic phase,” said David Chao. He, like Hua and Lagerling, is betting that Android is going to win the day in China, especially in the lower end of the market.
“Nokia is dying much faster than we expected,” said Hua. In the lower-price space, Android is quickly replacing feature phones in the entry-leve...

First Nvidia Tegra 3 Device May Launch November 9
Like UnlikeFiled in: nVIDIA
While we already know that Nvidia's Tegra 3 quad-core SoC (aka Kal-El) will arrive in the 10-inch Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2 (Prime) tablet, Asus CEO Jonney Shih said that both the tablet and the highly-anticipated superpowered-chip will arrive on November 9.
Nvidia's Tegra 3 was previously reported to arrive by the end of summer or early September, but the company delayed its release due to a need for an increased validation timeframe. "It took a little more time than we thought to get the software optimized for the hardware,” a Nvidia spokesperson told EE Times. "We are on schedule."

Apple has released a new firmware update for the Sandy Bridge iMacs that enables Lion Internet Recovery, allowing customers to connect to Apple's servers in the event that they need to do a clean install of OS X Lion. It additionally fixes issues with the Apple Thunderbolt Display and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode.
Lion Recovery, designed to replace recovery discs in the post-Lion era, was originally introduced in the new MacBook Air and Mac Mini models earlier this year, and was extended to the Sandy Bridge MacBook Pros last month.
The update, which requires OS X 10.6.8 or any version of 10.7, can be downloaded using Software Update, or directly from Apple's support site.

Gigabyte Intros A75N-USB 3.0 Mini-ITX Motherboard for AMD A-Series APUs
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotherboardsGIGABYTEGA-A75N-USB3
Gigabyte released its newest premium HTPC motherboard in the mini-ITX form-factor, the A75N-USB3. As the name might suggest, this is a socket FM1 motherboard based on the AMD A75 chipset, and features USB 3.0 connectivity. Despite its compact dimensions, the board crams in everything a HTPC can benefit from. First, the FM1 socket seats AMD A-Series accelerated processing units (APUs), which pack up to four x86-64 cores with up to 4 MB cache, dual-channel DDR3-1866 integrated memory controller, and more importantly, a very powerful integrated graphics processor in the Radeon HD 6500 class. The FM1 socket on this board is powered by a 3+1 phase VRM that makes use of driver-MOSFETs. Power is dr...

RIM quietly loses cloud service exec Jim Tobin
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
BlackBerry maker RIM has parted ways with yet another executive, this time with senior executive Jim Tobin, the company quietly confirmed Thursday. The departure was never officially announced, and the senior VP for software and business services left the company months ago, RIM told Reuters. He was charged with developing cloud-based services and reported directly to co-CEO Jim Balsillie.
Tobin's LinkedIn profile still shows him being a RIM employee, and RIM hasn't revealed the reasons behind Tobin's departure.
Tobin's work involved allowing enterprise customers to use servers hosted by RIM rather than on-site computers to handle e-mail and other corporate data. He also worked on a team tha...

Motorola shipped only 100,000 XOOM tablets in Q3
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsMotorolaXOOM
Motorola Mobility reported its Q3 earnings report today and revealed a gloomy future for its Motorola XOOM tablet. The company had shipped only 100,000 units of the tablet in this last quarter, which is far less than the 440,000 units shipped in the quarter before as well as the 250,000 units shipped in the quarter of the tablet’s launch. It must also be noted that this is the number shipped and not necessarily the number actually sold.
In contrast, Apple’s iPad shipped 11.1 million units during the same period, far ahead of all Android tablet competitors. Despite this, Motorola is expected to announce a successor to the XOOM sometime soon and has recently begun 4G LTE upgrades for the curre...

HP will keep PC division, hope alive
Like UnlikeFiled in: HP
There's been plenty of speculation about what the future holds for HP and its Personal Systems Group -- a group that CEO Leo Apotheker seemed intent to shed -- but the crew now led by CEO Meg Whitman has just confirmed that division is staying home, where it belongs. Meg says the company "objectively evaluated" the idea of spinning PSG off but decided that keeping it in-house is "right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees." Or, maybe her reserve wasn't met. Either way, the press release after the break goes on to confirm that the board believes PSG will continue to "drive profitable growth" in these challenging times. Maybe good 'ol Leo was right when h...

ARMv8 detailed: first 64-bit chip, backwards compatible
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPU
ARM on Thursday outlined some of the details of its first 64-bit chip architecture, ARMv8. The design is an extension of the current 32-bit ARMv7 and either keeps or expands on features like its Neon instructions, security, and virtual machine support. Most of the benefit comes from the move to 64-bit by itself, which lets it handle much larger data sets and support more virtual memory, sometimes leading to faster performance.
Its 32-bit component keeps all the same features and is backwards compatible. An OS could theoretically build in support for legacy apps, although ARM hasn't said if the v8 platform supports running 32- and 64-bit code at the same time.

Motorola Pro+ 4G rides into Canada November 7th, will kick off shoes and stay a while
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaPRO+
We knew it was planning to grace Europe and Asia with its presence this month, but now we're hearing the Motorola Pro+ 4G is ready to make its North American debut at Bell Canada. We're not seeing any large differences here compared to the overseas model, though the addition of "4G" to the title is an obvious exception. The device offers a 1GHz CPU, 512MB of RAM, Android 2.3, a 5MP camera, 3.1-inch VGA (640 x 480) display with Gorilla Glass, HSPA 14.4 (hence the "4G" name) and a lot of Enterprise-friendly security features. We know it'll be hitting shelves on November 7th, but no price has been announced so far. To find out the full shebang, head south for the press release.

Samsung’s white Galaxy Note revealed

Samsung kicks off its Galaxy Note European tour in London, UK, today, showing off the 5.3-inch Android smartphone-tablet-hybrid on the eve of its European release. The company has also whipped out a surprise, in the shape of a white Samsung Galaxy Note, rather than the black version that debuted at IFA 2011 last month.
Aside from the new color option, the white Galaxy Note is functionally identical to its black sibling. That means the same dual-core processor, and the same 5.3-inch Super AMOLED HD screen running at 1280 x 800 paired with a digital S Pen for handwriting, annotations and sketching.
