Siri port now talking to Apple servers, avoiding Cydia

Siri port now talking to Apple servers, avoiding Cydia

A little cajoling from a clever developer got Siri talking to the iPhone 4 and the iPad, but Apple's tight-lipped servers kept the conversation effectively one-sided. The last-gen port was still missing something, and developer Steven Troughton-Smith knew where to find it: a jailbroken iPhone 4S. In an interview with 9to5Mac, Troughton-Smith said that getting Siri to talk to Cupertino's data servers only took ten minutes after he had all of the pieces in place. Ready for your personal assistant port? Hold the phone, the process is a bit dodgy -- our hacking hero said that getting Siri on the older device is a 20-step process, and it requires files from the iPhone 4S that he says aren't his t...

It’s Time For Google To Let Google Voice Live Up To Its Promise

It’s Time For Google To Let Google Voice Live Up To Its Promise

Last week TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington wrote a post highlighting the fact that iPhone users can get a surprisingly good experience using Google Voice if they’re willing to switch to Sprint. Google Voice on the iPhone typically has some hurdles, mostly because Apple won’t let the native Google Voice app ‘take over’ the dialer the way it can on Android (not to mention the fact that the iOS GV app is notoriously buggy). But Sprint has done some unique, deep integration at the carrier level that minimizes these issues.
His post got me thinking about my experience with Google Voice since I began using it exclusively in November 2009. My conclusion: there are a lot of areas for improvement...

HTC Mozart getting firmware update with internet sharing in India, but not Hong Kong

HTC Mozart getting firmware update with internet sharing in India, but not Hong Kong

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

WeloveWP.hk reports that a firmware update to the HTC Mozart is rolling out in India which brings internet sharing to the handset. The update was reported by Aviraj Ajgekar, a Microsoft employee, and has also rolled out to others in the region.
WeloveWP.hk are however pretty miffed, as they have also had a firmware update for their handsets, including the HTC HD7 and the HTC Mozart, without any Internet Sharing enabled. It seems this is one feature which, probably due to carrier support, will not be available to everyone after all.
Have any of our readers received the post-Mango firmware update, and did it bring Internet Sharing? Let us know your your region and carrier below.

Samsung Italy: Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note and dual-core tablets getting Android 4.0 update

Samsung Italy: Galaxy S II, Galaxy Note and dual-core tablets getting Android 4.0 update

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Samsung Italy has apparently confirmed that the company’s high-end devices (i.e. those with a dual-core processor) will all get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update. In other words, the list of products that will be blessed with the latest version of Android includes:
Galaxy S II
Galaxy Note
Galaxy Tab 10.1
Galaxy Tab 8.9
Galaxy Tab 7.7
Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus
We assume the carrier specific versions of the Galaxy S II will also get the same treatment though not as fast as the unlocked device. Moreover, we would hope to see some of the phones with a fast single-core processor (1.4 GHz) on the list, like the Galaxy W or T-Mobile Exhibit II, but I guess Samsung is still evaluating that option....

UK Deal: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S now available with Orange's £20.50/month contract at Phones4U

UK Deal: Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S now available with Orange's £20.50/month contract at Phones4U

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Third-party phone retailer Phones4U has a great deal for the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S, offering the sexy smartphone for free with Orange’s 20.50 GBP per month plan. That money won’t get you too far though, but for some folks it could be a good enough solution – you get 200 voice minutes, 3,000 texts and 100MB of mobile data per month. Presuming you’re not calling a lot and rely mostly on Wi-Fi hotspots for mobile Internet, this plan could be just what you need. Otherwise — if you still want the Xperia arc S — you’ll have to pick some other plan with the phone.

O2 UK is now selling the HTC Sensation XE, which is still the best Android smartphone made by the Taiwanese company. The Telefónica-owned operator is offering the device for free to anyone willing to commit on a two-year contract with a 36 GBP per month plan. Of course, there are also some more expensive options as well as those that require some cash upfront — all of which you can see from this page at O2′s website (accessible only in the UK).
As a reminder, the Sensation XE is the handset maker’s first smartphone with Beats Audio technology that comes with Beats by Dre in-ear headphones. In addition, it also sports a 4.3-inch qHD (540×960 pixels) touchscreen, 1.5GHz dual-core processor, HS...

HP Windows 8 tablets arriving next year, CEO says; webOS future up in the air

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

During the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Thursday, HP CEO Meg Whitman confirmed that her company will launch tablets powered by Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system next year. “One of my observations is that HP tries to do a lot of things,” Whitman explained. “And I am a big believer in doing a small number of things really, really well — set them up, knock them down, set them up, knock them down.” Whitman’s comments are in-line with recent rumors that suggested that Dell and HP would both launch Windows 8 tablets during the third quarter next year. As for webOS, the mobile operating system HP’s former CEO Léo Apotheker basically killed off: “I think from a webOS perspective tha...

Apple may be crowd-sourcing ideas for iPhone 4S battery problems

Apple may be crowd-sourcing ideas for iPhone 4S battery problems

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Unfortunately, it seems like short battery life is no longer just a worry for Android users, because Apple has battling its own troubles with the iPhone 4S. There have been widespread complaints that battery life in the iPhone 4S is unnecessarily short, even after users turn off persistent battery draining services like iCloud, Siri, location awareness, and Ping. In our informal poll from last week, we found that a significant number of users were noticing a problem.
Now, there are reports that Apple may be contacting users directly to find a solution to the problem. One user has claimed that Apple had contacted him and asked that he install a diagnostic tool on his iPhone 4S. That user tol...

Following parent company Coinstar’s third-quarter earnings report, Redbox announced that daily DVD rental fees have increased to $1.20 from $1. “The price change is based on an increase in operating costs, including higher debit card fees that went into effect October 1,” Redbox said in a statement on its website. “This is the first time in eight years Redbox has raised our daily DVD rental price.” Redbox will continue to charge $1 for the first day of each DVD rental during a promotional period from October 31st through November 30th, though additional days will be charged at the new rate of $1.20 per night. GameStop testing sales of Android tablets in 200 stores

GameStop testing sales of Android tablets in 200 stores

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that during this holiday season, retailer GameStop will put specialized Android tablets in 200 stores to see how well they sell. The tablets, made by Asus, Acer and Samsung, will each come with seven free games including EA's "Dead Space", and will be offered at the same price you would see at other stores. Although the tablets will support GameStop's new controller out of the box, it must be purchased separately at the store.
Last month, we reported that GameStop was planning on offering its own Android tablets to sell in its stores. Besides offering pre-installed games, console quality content would be streamed from the cloud using the controller. The i...

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 reportedly launching on November 7th

Barnes & Noble Nook Color 2 reportedly launching on November 7th

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Barnes & Noble may release the successor to its Nook Color Android tablet on November 7th, according to The Digital Reader. Reportedly, the bookseller is preparing an entire new “Nook” department of its brick and mortar stores, which will include LED TVs and point-of-sale systems for shoppers interested in buying the eReader on the spot. It is unclear what sort of specs the Nook Color 2 will feature, although we suspect the device will run Android and its screen will be similar to the 7-inch screen on the original Nook Color. Additionally, we wouldn’t be surprised if Barnes & Noble lowered the price of the $249 Nook Color 2 down to $199 so that it will compete better with Amazon’s $199 Kindl...

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich not coming to LG Optimus 2X?

Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich not coming to LG Optimus 2X?

Posted on Oct 31, 2011 by MG1

Well, this doesn’t bode well for LG. Recently the handset-maker confirmed on Facebookthat the Optimus 2X will not receive the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update, even though it was only released in January of this year. This likely means that the T-Mobile G2X won’t be getting the update, either.
Back when we reviewed the Optimus 2X and T-Mobile G2X, we had very few negative things to say about the dual-core toting handsets. With the Optimus 2X being the first dual-core phone and managing to get itself into the Guinness Book of World Records, the future looked bright for the handset.
After a rather glowing review of the T-Mobile G2X, the problems began. Random reboots, or just shutting off...
