Anti-jailbreak BlackBerry PlayBook patch cracked in one day

Anti-jailbreak BlackBerry PlayBook patch cracked in one day

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

RIM's attempt to stomp out jailbreaking proved ineffective early Wednesday. Less than a day after posting a 1.0.8.6067 update to cover the security exploit used to open up the OS, a version 2.1 beta update for the DingleBerry root has come to get around the patch. Users have to install the crack before they apply the patch, but they just need to run a single command-line task to get root-level access.
The quick turnaround shows that RIM has some time to go before it claim to have mostly locked down security for the PlayBook. Although jailbreaks on iOS often come quickly, Apple's experience with patching the holes used by jailbreakers has meant that they usually take longer to find, especiall...

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

iPhone for Verizon Wireless - how it compares to other versions

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Another day, another question to answer. This time one of our readers asked me whether the iPhone 4S sold by Verizon Wireless is any better than what two other big carriers (AT&T and Sprint) are offering.
The short answer is – NO! You’ll get the best experience with AT&T’s iPhone 4S because it’s the only one that supports simultaneous voice and data. While iPhone 4S sold by Sprint and Verizon Wireless rely on a CDMA network, AT&T’s version connects to a GSM one, which allows this capability [data and voice at the same time]. In real-life this means that you’ll still be getting push notifications from the web even when you’re in the middle of a call.

The European Commission announced Tuesday that it has opened formal proceedings to investigate whether or not major eBook publishers, possibly “with the help of Apple,” are “engaged in anti-competitive practices affecting the sale of eBooks.” The publishing companies named in the investigation include Hachette Livre, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin and Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holzbrinck. “The Commission will in particular investigate whether these publishing groups and Apple have engaged in illegal agreements or practices that would have the object or the effect of restricting competition in the EU or in the EEA,” the European Commission said in a statement. It is unclear how long ...

RIM fires its two drunk executives that caused Air Canada flight u-turn at the North Pole

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: RIM BlackBerry

The two RIM execs - George Campbell and Paul A. Wilson - who got drunk on an Air Canada flight to Beijing have been discharged from the company.
They caused such a stir during flight, that the crew was forced to make a U-turn at the North Pole and bring the plane back to Vancouver where the guys were arrested after being handcuffed by the crew and passengers to their seats. The judge ordered them to pay 35, 878 Canadian dollars each to the airline, and placed them on probation.
Needless to say, RIM was not happy with the developments and issued an official statement condemning the behavior, and saying that it does not comply with the company's integrity, so the execs were fired.

Dell's last U.S. Android tablet vanishes, company insists it is still interested in Android

Dell's last U.S. Android tablet vanishes, company insists it is still interested in Android

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Dell has discontinued offering the Streak 7 Android tablet in the U.S. The Streak 7 was Dell's sole remaining Android tablet to be available in the U.S., but the company insists that it is still very much interested in Android - for the global market, at least.
In the U.S., the Streak 7 was available from T-Mobile with HSPA+ 3G connectivity options. To say that it was a slow seller would be an understatement, but neither company has actually released specific sales figures for it. Before the Streak 7, Dell offered the Streak 5, a smaller 5-inch tablet that was fraught with software issues and a high price tag. The Streak 7 was the last Android tablet to be sold by Dell in the U.S.
Despite it...

StumbleUpon updates design and broadens scope with channels

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

StumbleUpon's got a fresh look and new features in its second round as a startup — the site's rolling out a new logo, a new color scheme and layout, an integrated search engine, and "channels" for high-profile partners. The channels are basically curated areas which show content recommendations from a variety of websites, brands, and people, including Tom Hanks, Jim Carrey, ESPN, Adult Swim, Harvard University, and more than 200 others. Channels and search have not changed the basic formula, though — for those who don't know, StumbleUpon's eponymous functionality allows users to bounce between unexpected web content within areas of their interest.
StumbleUpon had an interesting ride last de...

A historic tube station in Aldwych, which is a popular tourist destination, has banned the use of digital SLR cameras by visitors.
Now out of use, the station, which charges £20 for entry, has been used in a number of films and television programmes. A sign appeared outside the station reading "Due to their combination of high-quality sensor and high resolution, digital SLR cameras are unfortunately not permitted inside the station."
While many tourist destinations have a number of differing restrictions on photography, including not using flash or not taking photographs altogether, digital SLR cameras are not usually specifically banned from such places. Other areas, such as music venues ha...

Struggling photography brand Kodak has hired law firm Sullivan & Cromwell's, in a bid to restructure its finances in order to avoid bankruptcy, according to reports.
Earlier in the year, Kodak employed Jones Day, sparking worldwide speculation that it was about to file for bankruptcy, as Jones Day is well known for working on such cases.
The reasons behind the switch in law firms remains unclear, however Kodak is remaining resolute regarding filing, seemingly keen to avoid it all costs.
Kodak has been facing increasing financial problems, with warnings last month that it could run out of cash if couldn't sell assets or raise new funds quickly. By the end of September, Kodak had $862m, down f...

Rumor: Amazon Kindle Fire launching in the UK next month?

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Amazon’s 7 inch Android tablet that isn’t an Android tablet, the Kindle Fire, has been out in the United States for a few weeks now. Sadly, for everyone else on the planet it isn’t. According to the folks at Know Your Mobile, that’s soon going to change, at least for the UK. They say that the Kindle Fire will launch as early as next month in Jolly Ol’ England. No other details, such as the all important price tag, were revealed. Now to be completely honest, we don’t buy this rumor. History has a way of repeating itself, so let’s look at what happened with the first Kindle. It came out in November 2007, was out of stock until April 2008, and it never left America. The second Kindle came out i...

White Motorola Droid RAZR for Verizon Wireless now official

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

The Motorola Droid RAZR for Verizon Wireless is arguably one of the prettiest smartphones on the market right now. If it weren’t for the terrible AMOLED screen and the questionable battery life, then this writer would have a hard time resisting the urge to pick one up this holiday shopping season. So last month when rumors started floating around the internet that Verizon would be introducing a white variant of the Droid RAZR, you can understand that many Android fans started foaming from the mouth with anticipation. Well now it’s official, and … meh, it’s actually not what we were expecting. In fact, it shouldn’t even be called white. It’s basically the same black Droid RAZR we’ve already r...
