Verizon 4G LTE network turns one year old today

Verizon 4G LTE network turns one year old today

Though it seems like just yesterday that we were first unboxing the HTC ThunderBolt, the first smartphone to roll out on Verizon’s still-impressive 4G LTE network here in the USA, it’s been one year to the day that the network has been active. On the first day the network was officially deployed, it covered an already impressive 39 markets, this eclipsed at this one year marker by the current 190 markets the Verizon 4G LTE network sits in today. While the Verizon LTE network has been their “4G” offering since they originally started promoting the “4G” term, they mention the competition as being less prepared for the eventual oncoming of higher speed networks – sarcasm in tow, of course.

Xbox TV puts Microsoft ahead of Apple and Google

Xbox TV puts Microsoft ahead of Apple and Google

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Gaming has long been Microsoft’s wildcard: while the company struggles to find its feet with Windows Phone, and faces a difficult tablet market when its Windows 8 slates finally appear, the Xbox 360 continues to sell strongly. Now Xbox TV has arrived to not only reassure 360-owning gamers that they made the right console choice, but broaden the 360′s appeal to a whole new segment. It’s not entirely fashionable to praise Microsoft, especially when it’s over something that, buried in the company’s history books, they’ve tried and failed at before. Smart TV has suffered the usual ignominies and from the usual flaws: sluggish hardware, confusing interface, dawdling internet connections. Now, wit...

A panel has been appointed to investigate the role of the company's former senior management in the scam, and is expected to deliver its report very soon.

Europe to crack down on privacy breaches with steep fines

Europe to crack down on privacy breaches with steep fines

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

The European Commission is finalizing privacy protection rules where companies could be fined up to five percent of their global sales for mishandling the data of customers, suppliers, or employees. Because the law would apply to foreign companies with branches in Europe, it gives the EU significant power to regulate privacy worldwide. Under the proposed system, all companies with more than 250 employees would be required to have dedicated data protection staff, and businesses would have 24 hours to notify authorities of a security breach. (Sony would have failed that requirement with the recent PlayStation Network outage, an event that played into the US SEC's decision to set guidelines for...

New periodic table elements finally get names, will probably want to trade them in

New periodic table elements finally get names, will probably want to trade them in

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Flerovium and livermorium. Prime names for really ugly babies -- or, equivalently, new elements on the periodic table. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry opted for the latter last week, baptizing elements 114 and 116 just about six months after they were first ratified. Back in June, as you may recall, Russia's Joint Institute for Nuclear Research proposed flerovium and muscovium as names for the two ultraheavy elements, while deferring to the IUPAC for final say on the matter. At the time, the organization said it would likely accept any name, as long as "it's not something too weird." Flerovium (Fl), named after Soviet nuclear physicist Georgiy Flerov, apparently passed ...

Sony Ericsson to become Sony in mid-2012

Sony Ericsson to become Sony in mid-2012

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Sony Ericsson

Sony and Ericsson's decade-long partnership may have humbled Kim Kardashian, but dwindling market share and an over-reliance on feature phones signaled the end of the affair. Ericsson will have until "mid 2012" to clear its things from the spare room before the electronics giant begins a new solo venture. The revitalized enterprise will leverage its parent company's brand strength, R&D and content (since it owns a massive chunk of the entertainment industry) and in comments made to Times of India, company Vice President Kristian Tear said there would be a "fierce" advertising push to restore the company's reputation as a major player worldwide -- before taking a Pilates class to try and fit ...

Comcast president Neil Smit confirmed during a UBS investor conference on Monday that his company will begin to bundle Verizon Wireless products with its services in early 2012. Comcast, Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks announced late last week that Verizon Wireless had agreed to purchase spectrum from SpectrumCo, joint venture created by the three firms, for $3.6 billion. Verizon Wireless will use the spectrum to build out its 4G LTE wireless network and agreed to allow each company to sell its products and services through wholesale channels. Smit told Reuters that Comcast will still compete head-to-head with Verizon Wireless’s parent company, Verizon Communications, which owns ...

As we previously reported, the trio states that the a Dingleberried PlayBook is able to stream content from Hulu and a Dingleberried Playbook running the 2.0 beta can run the Android Market and install APK files without having to convert them into BAR files.
RIM has already proclaimed that they would release a patch for the PlayBook as soon as a jailbreak was released. As expected, the developers responded by saying ...

After extensive coverage of Samsung‘s war with Apple overseas, there’s a bit of a twist today: the legal battles don’t always involve Samsung and they aren’t taking place overseas. Welcome back to the legal battles between HTC and Apple. On December 14th, the smartphone manufacturer may face a giant ban against U.S. imports. If so, it would be a devastating blow to the company.
The patents currently being argued over mostly relate to software. The first is for a “system and method for performing an action on a structure in computer-generated data.” It sounds broad, but it gets a little more specific when Apple provides an example, such as the ability to find and highlight phone numbers in Sa...

Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung on Monday said that his company is ramping up its defense against Apple in 2012. Speaking to The Korea Times, Samsung’s chief executive confirmed the creation of a $200 million war chest that the South Korea-based vendor will use to fight Apple’s patent-related advances moving forward. Apple has of course launched attacks against Samsung in a number of regions across the world, alleging that Samsung tablets and smartphones copy its designs and infringe on various Apple-owned patents. Samsung recently scored a small victory in the United States when a federal judge refused to ban sales of Samsung’s Galaxy devices. ”If we win in Paris as well, that’s truly a big blow ...

Google+ updated for iOS with shiny new logo

Google+ updated for iOS with shiny new logo

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

The Google+ app has been updated for iOS users, and the new version adds a couple of nice features, but ignores some of the known issues with the app. The update brings the Google+ app on iOS to version 1.0.7.2940, which doesn't really tell you anything.
The nice additions to the app are the ability to upload full resolution pictures from your device, and also a search option. We could make quips about Google taking its sweet time in adding search to Google+, but it seems like a played out thought at this point. Either way, users on iOS can now search for topics, users and keywords on G+ right from the iOS app. One downside with the full res pictures is that you will be able to upload them,...

"Yes, Mr. Smith, the screen on the Samsung GALAXY Nexus is the world's first HD Super AMOLED display allowing you to watch YouTube videos and movies in high-def.
Plenty of space on the training material was given to Google+ and its Circles, Hangouts and Messenger applications. Of course, Verizon provided a list of the Samsung GALAXY Nexus' game changing features such as the curved display which helps prevent scratches on the ...

Verizon Galaxy Nexus arrives in stores - Still just a tease

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

While we’re pretty much in love with the GSM version of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, there’s still no official US release date and not many people are willing to throw down $750+ for it. As you may all know at this point, the Galaxy Nexus’ first stop will be a Verizon Wireless and it looks like units are beginning to arrive in the house of Big Red.
Units have began to arrive in stores today, and the picture above is just a small glimpse of the retail packaging, which varies from the GSM version. This isn’t all that surprising, as we already know Verizon has weaseled in some bloatware applications into the handset.
