RIM's BBX OS rebranded as BlackBerry 10 following trademark suit
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
Research In Motion has changed the name of its next-generation operating system to BlackBerry 10 following a trademark dispute over the BBX name. BBX was originally introduced as RIM’s next mobile software platform that will be deployed on the company’s tablets and smartphones. RIM was forced to change it after Basis International won a court ruling in a federal court in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Tuesday that barred RIM from using the “BBX” brand name during a technology conference in Singapore. “The BlackBerry 10 name reflects the significance of the new platform and will leverage the global strength of the BlackBerry brand while also aligning perfectly with RIM’s device branding,” RIM sai...

Amazon will give you $5 if you use its Price Check app this weekend
Like UnlikeFiled in: Amazon
No joke, it really will. All you have to do is walk into a retailer this Saturday, whip out your smartphone and use Amazon's Price Check app to collect price data on in-store items. In exchange, the company will offer you a discount of five percent (or up to $5) on "select items" in electronics, toys, music, and other product divisions, though you'll only be able to use it a maximum of three times. The campaign represents Amazon's latest attempt to creep into the brick and mortar sector on the back of barcode scanning technology, and seems like a pretty clever way to bolster its mobile presence, while gathering intel on its competitors' prices, as well. It all kicks off at 9 PM (PST) on Frid...

Apple job listings hint at possible Siri API for third party apps
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
A few job postings from Apple lead to the thought that we can see a Siri API, after all, which will allow its role to expand in iOS and pave the way for third party apps to take advantage of its wit and server algorithms.
The posts says two engineers are needed to work on Siri, and one reads literally: "We are looking for an engineer to join the team that implements the UI for Siri. You will primarily be responsible for implementing the conversation view and its many different actions. This includes defining a system that enables a dialog to appear intuitive, a task that involves many subtle UI behaviors in a dynamic, complex system. You will have several clients of your code, so the ability...

Verizon CEO says shared data plans coming in 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon is gearing up to offer shared data plans sometime in 2012. That's straight from CEO Lowell McAdam, who told the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference this morning, "I think in 2012 we will see it... Getting to one bill and getting to account-level pricing is our goal." Sharing data the way they do family plan minutes is something many consumers have been clamoring for and AT&T's CEO Ralph de la Vega indicated earlier this year that his carrier was planning to offer such an option. Soon enough you might be able to buy a chunk of minutes and data then pile on the lines for a flat rate.

Verizon CEO "thinks" shared data plans will come next year
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
There has been talk of shared, or family, data plans coming to Verizon Wireless for months, but it has all been of the "sometime in the future" variety. Now, Verizon Communications CEO Lowell McAdam has offered a timeframe, albeit an extremely broad timeframe, for when we can expect to see the carrier implement shared data plans.
Speaking at a communications conference, McAdam stated "I think in 2012 we will see it," referring to the shared data plans. He continued, "We have been working on this for a couple of years. Getting to one bill and getting to account-level pricing is our goal." Unfortunately, he did not offer specifics as to how a shared data plan would work or how much it would co...

Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMotorolaGoogleAndroid 4.0
If you’ve picked up a new Motorola Droid Razr, you’re probably wondering when you’re going to get the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. Well, Motorola feels your pain and it has written a blog post outlining its Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade plans.
Motorola doesn’t hit on many new beats, as it reiterates that the Droid Razr, Droid Bionic and Xoom will definitely get the 4.0 upgrade but it does give us a deeper look at what it takes to upgrade these devices to the latest version of Android. The process goes like this: Google open sources the latest version, Motorola adapts that to its devices and adds its own touches like MotoCast, it stabilizes the upgrade, submits that to carrier certifi...

Motorola has posted a rather lengthy explanation of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade process to its corporate blog, where it details the four major steps that need to occur before a software update is made available to users. Unfortunately, the company doesn't provide any extra information as to exactly when the Android 4.0 upgrade for existing devices will be released or when it plans to launch new devices with Android 4.0 already on them. It did reiterate its previous commitment to bring the new software to the DROID RAZR, DROID BIONIC, and XOOM tablet, but it has yet to provide an exact timeframe.

TV-enabled iMac could launch before Apple's Siri HDTV, analyst says
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple may launch an iMac with integrated “TV capability” before it launches its own full-blown HDTV, Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair said Wednesday. Blair said Apple’s new iMacs, which could launch during the first half of 2012, will integrate several features that are currently found in the Apple TV set top box and create a “slimmer all-in-one PC with TV capabilities.” Blair doesn’t make any mention of the Siri voice engine, which Apple is expected to use in its HDTV to completely remove any need for a remote control. “Apple could effectively start with what they already have on the manufacturing line and slowly push their offering from 27 inches and scale up from there to 32 inches and ...

OnLive unveils its cloud gaming app for smartphones and tablets
Like UnlikeFiled in: Tablets
It's been a long wait since we first heard about OnLive's plans to turn every tablet and smartphone into a gaming console, where the heavy lifting in games graphics processing will be done by the company's servers, and you will be only streamed the pretty imagery, sending back input control commands for number crunching.
OnLive unveiled its iOS and Android apps yesterday, and there are about 25 titles now that are optimized for touchscreen controls, including L.A. Noire. Of course, the larger the touchscreen the more comfortable will the gaming experience be, so tablets are a primer candidate for some OnLive-ing than smartphones with smaller screens, for example.
The company's proprietary st...

Nokia Lumia 900 and Champagne pop up in dev records, possible Tango build makes appearance
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 900
Nokia's field testers must be avid fans of the Times of India Windows Phone app, because unannounced phones like the Lumia 900 and Champagne are beginning to show up in its stats. This tells us nothing of specs, but here's what we learned: both phones are real, and they're not the same exact device. The app also discovered a new build of Windows Phone called 7.10.8725 in its system, a hint that one of these two handsets -- likely the Champagne -- may be running on the next OS update known as Tango. Does this mean the Champagne is destined for emerging markets? We're hoping to find out in Vegas at CES, just a month from now.

Nokia Lumia 800 is starting to get its very first firmware update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 800
Following through on a promise made back towards the end of last month, the first firmware update for the Nokia Lumia 800 is starting to roll out as we speak – bringing along some much needed fixes and tweaks to improve the high status Windows Phone.
So far, the update is being pushed out in countries where the handset is made available, and carries along quite a few performance and usability enhancements. However, it’s not clearly known if it directly addresses the handset’s power efficiency, which has plagued some owners with erratic battery life. Instead, the changelog for the firmware update mentions it offering the following:

Napster to Live On in the UK and Germany
Like UnlikeBack in the beginning of October, Rhapsody announced that it was acquiring Napster. Purchased by Best Buy in September of 2008, Rhapsody said that the agreement would see it acquire Napster subscribers and certain other assets, while Best Buy would receive a minority stake in Rhapsody. The transaction closed last week and Rhapsody announced that Napster was now fully merged with its on-demand music service. However, despite what you may think, we haven't seen the last of the Napster brand.
The Register reports that, while the name Napster might soon become a distant memory in the United States, it will live on in the United Kingdom and Germany. The Reg reports that Napster UK wasn't included...
