Westinghouse is bringing new LED HDTVs to CES, acronym lovers reportedly 'delighted'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Westinghouse
In January, Westinghouse Digital likes to drive on down to Nevada and show off its wares for the next 12 months at CES. Everything in Las Vegas is super-sized, which is great inspiration for Westy's new 70-inch LED HDTV that'll pump out 1080p episodes of "proper" CSI at 120Hz, with an 8ms response time. If your inner-city apartment doesn't have a 70-inch wall, then perhaps you'd prefer the new 46-inch ultra-slim LED HDTV that's so slender, it probably disappears if you look at it side-on, or something. The company's also gonna be showing off its first ever Bluetooth Soundbar that comes packing two 12 watt speakers, a class D amplifier and enhanced bass so you can really enjoy those opening b...

Verizon planning streaming video service, gets ready to take on Netflix
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
We can't say we're entirely shocked by the move but, according to Reuters, Verizon is getting ready to enter the streaming media market. Reports are that the company is in talks with programming partners to provide content for a Netflix-like video service that it could offer to customers not currently covered by its high-speed FiOS network. Obviously, details are scant, and there's no telling when it might actually launch, but you can bet its competitors will be watching closely... and we don't just mean Netflix. Cable and satellite TV providers are already wary of the public embracing cord-cutting -- when one of their own seems to be encouraging the behavior it sets off a lot of alarms.

AMD Shows New A-Series Notebook APUs
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUAMDA8-3550MXA8-3520MA6-3430MXA6-3420MA4-3330MXA4-3320MA4-3305M
Yesterday AMD quietly introduced seven new accelerated A-Series notebook APU's, featuring quad and dual-core designs.
Four out of the seven CPUs introduced by AMD are from the A8 and A6 series which means that they include four processing cores, while the remaining three are A4 chips with dual computing cores.
The fastest of these quad-core models is the A8-3550MX which compared to its predecessor got 100MHz higher base and Turbo Core speeds, making it the first Llano mobile processors to reach the 2GHz frequency (2.7GHz in Turbo mode).
However, the specs of the graphics core were left unaltered and the chip sports the same Radeon HD 6620G integrated GPU which operated at 444MHz.

NVIDIA sees ARM supercomputer be more efficient than x86
Like UnlikeFiled in: CPUnVIDIA
It'll be very interesting to see ARM development and implementation in the years to come.
EE Times reports NVIDIA is betting on ARM to be more efficient for supercomputers than x86: In a recent interview, Nvidia’s Sumit Gupta, director of Tesla marketing, said the only real advantage to x86 systems was that they could run operating systems like Microsoft Windows faster, but that when it came to needing maximum performance on minimum power, ARM was the future, and therefore a better option for supercomputing.

Nokia seeking buyer for Vertu, says Financial Times
Like UnlikeFiled in: NOKIA
FT is citing an unnamed source today as saying that Nokia has retained Goldman Sachs as an advisor in a bid to sell its Vertu subsidiary, the UK-based purveyor of handmade ultra-luxury phones. Though you might think that the market for $10,000 handsets running Symbian is an extraordinarily small one, various reports over the past couple years have claimed that the division — which doesn't report its own revenue figures — is highly profitable, so it stands to reason that Nokia could end up fetching a strong price for it. Current rumors have a number of private equity firms looking at striking a deal, but the speculation is that luxury brands (some of which, like Prada and Armani, have taken t...

LG G2x for T-Mobile gets a second shot at OTA Gingerbread update
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesOperating SystemsT-MobileGoogleAndroid 2.3G2x
LG's G2x launched in April to reports of random reboots, overheating, and low battery life, but a July upgrade to Android 2.3 Gingerbread aimed to resolve most of the issues. In a somewhat odd move, T-Mobile has now started another rollout of the OTA updates, seemingly to catch any stragglers left behind. Along with the aforementioned fixes and enhancements of Gingerbread itself, the upgrade also improves the performance of the front-facing camera when using the video sharing app Qik.

New CMOS technology cuts power use by more than half
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cameras
SuVolta's PowerShrink was first revealed earlier ths year, as we review later in this story. But this week, SuVolta and initial licensee Fujitsu used the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting in Washington, D.C., to announce that the technology has been successfully demonstrated -- and also to shed a little more light on how it works.
According to the companies, the power consumption of SRAM has steadily ramped downwards as chips get smaller in size. For example, power supply voltages have fallen to around 1.0V for devices produced using 130nm fabrication.

US Justice Department also investigating Apple and others for ebook price fixing
Like UnlikeFiled in: Ebook ReadersApple
We heard just yesterday that the European Commission was investigating possible ebook price fixing by Apple and five major book publishers, and now the US Department of Justice has confirmed that it's investigating the situation. (To be clear, the news is the confirmation, not the investigation — that's been rumored since last year.) Like the European investigation, the DOJ is interested in the "agency model" of selling books, whereby the publishers set the final prices and Apple takes a cut; that's in contrast to the wholesale model used by Amazon in which the publishers sell the books to the retailer and Amazon decides the final prices at will. By agreeing to the agency model, Apple gave t...

New LG Optimus Pad photos leak, LTE on board
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsLGG-Slate
New pictures have surfaced of the alleged successor to LG's pricey G-Slate that confirm it will be an LTE device. Images of the new Optimus Pad first appeared around Thanksgiving, but its 4G status was unclear at the time; one of the new photos, published by Korean site Cetizen, clearly shows off an LTE startup screen. The tablet is reported to include a 1.5GHz Snapdragon processor, an 8.9-inch, 1280 x 768 TFT screen, and 1GB of storage (a microSD slot is also included). Featuring both a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear-facing shooter, the tablet will be running Android 3.2.1 Honeycomb at launch — though an upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich should be forthcoming. Some of Verizon's 4G LTE is OUT; Big Red working to resume service
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Verizon engineers are currently hard at work, trying to get the carrier's 4G LTE network up and running after complaints from customers that those with 4G handsets are not sending or receiving data. Verizon says that 3G voice and data are not affected by the outage. Some 4G customers have had their phone shift down to 3G coverage while others have had no service at all. According to Big Red, voice calls and texts are still going through (which brings a sigh of relief to those who voted for their favorite X Factor contestant on Wednesday night, using a Verizon LTE phone to text their selection).
