Three high level Nokia employees dealing with NFC leave the company

Three high level Nokia employees dealing with NFC leave the company

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

For all the flack we give Nokia about being noncompetitive in the smartphone space, mainly for being late to the touch screen game and because they alienated so many people with the Nokia N97 back in 2009, the Finnish handset maker is surprisingly ahead of everyone else when it comes to near field communications (NFC) support. Practically every Symbian smartphone they’ve announced over the past few months has NFC built-in, from the ultra low end Nokia 603 to the bleeding edge Nokia N9. You’d think that Nokia’s lead in NFC would be something that their employees would be proud of, but that doesn’t appear to be the case.

T-Mobile G2x gets its Gingerbread on (again), hopes it sticks

T-Mobile G2x gets its Gingerbread on (again), hopes it sticks

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

The G2x just can't seem to quit Gingerbread. After a series of upgrade starts and stops, LG is once again offering an OTA software upgrade for this pure Google experience device. The update started rolling out to handsets yesterday, but those impatient to part with FroYo can always opt for a manual install via the company's site. If you'll recall, the one-time T-Mobile flagship's woes began shortly after its launch, when complaints of random reboots, overheating and poor battery life overtook dedicated forums. Yet despite promises that Android 2.3 would hit "soon" to address these issues, frustrated owners were instead treated to an on again / off again melodrama of scheduled releases. Now, ...

Nokia Lumia 800 blowing past other Windows Phones, bringing new users to Windows Phone in France

Nokia Lumia 800 blowing past other Windows Phones, bringing new users to Windows Phone in France

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

According to data released by Arnaud Michelet, developer of the France Trafic use of the Nokia Lumia 800 shot up over a 5 week period, overtaking all of the current Windows Phone 7 handsets, both first and second generation.
There is no corresponding dip in the use of current handsets, showing the Lumia 800 is drawing new users to the platform, expanding the installed base by about 1/3 in our quick estimate.
Unless Nokia has been promoting the app, the data clearly shows Nokia’s media blitz is having a good effect. Another data point to add to the many others which show Nokia sales are pretty good after all, despite some misinformed analysts.

HTC HD7 getting update tomorrow, brings WIFI tethering

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesHTCHD7

TmoNews reports the HTC HD7 and HTC Radar 4G are both getting an update tomorrow which will bring fixes to visual voice mail (the only US carrier which actually support it) and also bring performance improvements. The update is likely the 7740 update which is slowly tricking out all around the world.
Of more interest is that the update will also bring WIFI tethering to the HTC HD7 and allow connection to hidden WIFI access points. There has been a rumour recently that AT&T is planning not to bring these new features to the Samsung Focus and other first generation devices.

Kindle Fire offers 'disappointingly poor' user experience, UI expert says

Kindle Fire offers 'disappointingly poor' user experience, UI expert says

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

User interface expert Dr. Jakob Nielsen, who describes himself as an author, researcher and consultant on user interfaces, recently studied the user experience of the Kindle Fire and dubbed it “disappointingly poor.” Nielsen said the lack of physical buttons impeded the reading experience, the device was too heavy and was “unpleasant to hold for long periods of time,” and while there was potential for a good magazine reading experience, Nielsen said the result was “miserable.” Nielsen even proposes a bit of a conspiracy theory to why the web browsing experience on the Kindle Fire might be inferior to other devices. “If I were given to conspiracy theories, I’d say that Amazon deliberately des...

Unlocked version of the Nokia Lumia 800 lands on Amazon for $649.99

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Are you still waiting around to pick up the highly regarded Nokia Lumia 800, but don’t feel like importing the Windows Phone Mango device? Well, you can now purchase one directly from Amazon – though, it’s still from a third-party seller.
In any event, the listing is for an unlocked version of the Nokia Lumia 800, which means you can pop in your SIM and start using it right away. Naturally, AT&T customers should take notice of this one seeing that the handset is compatible to work with the carrier’s HSPA network. Meanwhile, T-Mobile customers can still opt to use the handset with the carrier, but considering that it doesn’t support Tmo’s 1700MHz band, you’ll be surfing the web on EDGE speeds...

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, Android Market is a go

BlackBerry PlayBook rooted, Android Market is a go

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

After a brief lead-up period, the Dingleberry jailbreak for the BlackBerry PlayBook is now publicly available, though still in a very early beta. The exploit used to gain root access is actually pretty simple. PlayBook backup files used in the BlackBerry Desktop Software apparently aren’t signed, which means those files can be used to launch just about whatever you want on the device. So what can you do with it? Well, not too much yet, and the three guys behind Dingleberry are hoping that the developer community at large will run with this and do all sorts of neat stuff, but for now one of the devs have posted instructions on how to get the Android Market up and running on the PlayBook.

Is HTC’s 20% Revenue Dip Last Month A Sign Of Things To Come?

Is HTC’s 20% Revenue Dip Last Month A Sign Of Things To Come?

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: HTC

Even though HTC has just come off of a record-breaking third quarter, it seems like some of the company’s mobile momentum is evaporating. The Taiwanese company recently cut their Q4 sales forecasts by more than 20%, and thanks to HTC’s unaudited November financials, it’s clear that the move was a wise one.
The financial report reveals a considerable drop in revenue when compared to HTC’s performance this time in 2010. Last month HTC had revenues of NT$30.9 billion (or $1.02 billion), while last year they managed to pull in nearly NT$38.5 billion ($1.27 billion). That’s almost a 20% dip in revenues year-over-year, which could put an end to HTC’s continuous growth streak.

Verizon to benefit most from iPhone 4S: expected to add 1.2 million subscribers

Verizon to benefit most from iPhone 4S: expected to add 1.2 million subscribers

Posted on Dec 07, 2011 by MG1

Verizon is expected to be the carrier that reaps the most benefits out of the iPhone 4S stateside. A leaked memo by JP Morgan hints that Verizon Wireless will increase its subscriber count by 1.2 million in the fourth quarter, largely due to the iPhone 4S being available on the carrier since day 1 of its launch. AT&T, the carrier the iPhone originally launched on, is projected to only add 450,000 new subscribers, while Sprint is expected to boost its subscriber base by 250,000 in Q4 2011.
T-Mobile, in contrast, is the only one of the four major US carriers that doesn’t have the iPhone and the forecast is for its subscribers to decrease by 400,000.

The most powerful model out of the trio is the LW25H, which features 2500 ANSI lumens, a 3000:1 contrast ratio, and a WXGA (1280 x 800) resolution. The other two both share the same 2500:1 contrast ratio and XGA (1024 x 768) resolution. The only real difference between the LX30H and LX26H is that they come with 3000 ANSI lumens and 2600 ANSI lumens, respectively. Xbox 360 dashboard update arrives tomorrow, new content partners confirmed

Xbox 360 dashboard update arrives tomorrow, new content partners confirmed

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Microsoft is set to roll out a new dashboard update for its Xbox 360 console tomorrow that places a greater emphasis on its media center capabilities rather than just gaming. It's based on the same Metro design paradigm as Windows Phone 7 and the upcoming Windows 8, using flat squares and live tiles. It'll be a mandatary update, but according to early reviews, that's a good thing. The Xbox has never looked better.
One of the biggest aspects of the update is that it'll bring new Metro-inspired 'apps' from different content partners, advancing Microsoft's effort to conquer your living room and beat out alternatives from Apple and Google. The initial lineup is not too different from what's av...

Question mark over Firefox and Google search deal

Question mark over Firefox and Google search deal

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Google

Mozilla could be about to lose its largest revenue stream, with reports that Firefox has lost its lucrative search contract with Google which saw the browser pull in cash for each search made through the Firefox Google homepage.
The Mozilla Foundation is a non-profit organisation but revenue, alongside donations, is needed for the browser to survive and ZDnet is reporting that Google has not renewed its contract with Mozilla, which brought in a whopping 84 per cent of the company's royalty revenue last year.
Although Mozilla has not confirmed the situation, it is thought that after three years a new deal is off the table and even Mozilla's own financial statement makes no reference to Google...

24% of people now using mobile phone to pay in shops

Posted on Dec 06, 2011 by MG1

Filed in: Cell Phones

Nearly a quarter of people around the world are now forgoing cash and cards in shops and opting instead to pay using a mobile phone, according to the latest research.
KPMG surveyed 9,600 people who own a laptop, tablet, smartphone or mobile phone from 31 countries to come up with that figure, in the tax accountancy firm's fifth annual Consumer and Convergence Report.
When you look at the UK alone, however, that 24 per cent figure drops to 10 per cent, which suggests that the UK isn't quite there with the mobile payments thing quite yet.

Fact of the day: Hewlett Packard and Box.net's corporate headquarters are only one block away in Palo Alto, so Meg Whitman could have sealed this deal in a street corner branch of Starbucks. The two companies are teaming up to offer cloud-based collaboration and storage tools to select buyers (but only if they grab the gear via the Smart Buy program). Purchase a HP Compaq 6200 or 6005 Pro Series PC and you'll find 10GB free space waiting for you, plus discounted upgrades. Customers who go for the 8200 Elite Series PC instead, will find a year's free unlimited storage and sync on offer. If that all sounds so exciting that your palms are getting sweaty, head on past the break to find out more.
