Motorola Droid 4 gains DLNA certification as it slides into Verizon

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

It should come as no surprise that Motorola's upcoming Droid 4 smartphone would carry a DLNA certification -- just like its predecessor, the Droid 3 -- but if there were ever any doubt in your mind, then wonder no more. This handsome slider destined for Verizon Wireless has just earned its media chops from the Digital Living Network Alliance, which further solidifies indications of its near-term arrival. Sure, we're definitely looking forward to Moto's latest, although perhaps we're not quite so anxious as Best Buy.

Pantech Element poster spied at AT&T store, launch coming next week for $300?

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

We've had a pretty good inkling that the Pantech Element LTE tablet would make an appearance at CES in the coming days, and our confidence level just rose another notch. It appears that one corporate-owned AT&T store got the official marketing material for the new tablet a few days prior to the device's launch and was a little too eager to put it on display ahead of time. The tipster also spilled the beans on a few specs, lending credence to earlier rumors: it's a waterproof 8-inch tablet with a 1.5GHz CPU, 16GB of internal storage and LTE, and will go for $300 on a two-year commitment ($450 without).

Which Cell Phone Carrier Can You Depend On at CES?

Each year, thousands of techies descend upon Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show, tweeting, texting, calling, and surfing. So which carrier should CES attendees choose to deliver data when they need it?
According to a November report by RootMetrics and PCMag's own tests, it's Verizon—by a long shot. But T-Mobile also fared surprisingly well, followed closely by AT&T and Sprint.
Carriers polled by PCMag also revealed that they're making aggressive strides to add mobile capacity for CES. AT&T, for example, has temporarily deployed its latest LTE technology within the Las Vegas Convention Center, where most of the convention's booths will be housed, an AT&T spokeswoman said. It also wil...

At a presentation in Taiwan, Asus confirmed that it will be producing a Windows 8 powered ARM tablet that it plans on launching before the end of this year, although there are already rumors surrounding a September release. But Asus is certainly not giving up on Android. Eee Systems chief Samson Hu said that only weeks after the release of the quad-core powered Asus Transformer Prime, the manufacturer wants to get out ahead of the Apple iPad 3 with a new Android tablet. Hu said this device would have a 10 inch screen with "a high screen resolution". It is unknown whether this will be a totally new model or an upgrade of the Transformer Prime. The latest speculation on the third-gen Apple tab...

Sony Pictures exec says 'the pricing for online ownership is too high'

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Sony

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's executive vice president of global digital and commercial innovation John Calkins said in an interview with PC Magazine that "the pricing for online ownership is too high." He believes that companies should focus on lowering the cost of movies, since it's so easy to rent and stream for far less. Calkins thinks that a combination of extras (which aren't available when you digitally rent a film) and lower prices can help convince people to spend a bit more and opt for digital ownership. He added, however, that companies shouldn't over value extras — people may be willing to pay more for them on an extremely popular film like Avatar, but for your average film ...

BitTorrent launches free personal file-swapping service

BitTorrent launches free personal file-swapping service

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

BitTorrent just released a new cloud storage and file-sharing service that's set to rival YouSendIt, MegaUpload and the like. Simply called "Share", the new service combines BitTorrent peer-to-peer technology with Amazon's EC2 and S3 to store any type of file in the cloud and share it with a private group of people -- as opposed to creating a .torrent file for the public in general -- without size restrictions or fees.
For now the service is still an early Alpha phase, but the company has already released a stand-alone Share client for Windows and integrated it into the non-stable build of uTorrent for the Mac. To share files users are required to fill out "to" and "from" email addresses, an...

Toshiba Excite X10 tablet gets release and price info

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

The tag line for the Toshiba Excite X10 tablet has been that it will be the "thinnest and lightest" 10" tablet, but even before its official announcement it saw some competition on those claims from the Lenovo IdeaTab S2. The S2 has been announced as a 10" tablet at .3" thick and 1.1 pounds, while the Excite X10 is said to be .3" thick and 1.2 pounds. More exact millimeter measurements may show which is really the thinnest, but we're not sure how the weight war could change.
