Google Maps brings indoor mapping to CES
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
For those that might remember Google recently announced and released a new feature for Google Maps called indoor maps. Mapping indoors for big city shops and mainly malls, Home Depot, and other large traffic areas at first — we can happily say it works amazing in Vegas, and even more so for CES.

Lenovo's Y-Series Laptops Can Handle All Your Multimedia Demands, and Then Some
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksLenovo
Lenovo's Y-series laptops aren't flashy by any means, but the Intel Core i7 Processor, NVIDIA GeForce discrete graphics, JBL premium sound and Blu-ray drive make up for the workman-like exterior.
The Y580, specifically comes in 14 and 16-inch sizes, supports up to 8 gigabytes of RAM, and has a 1 terabyte hard drive. There's also the option to add a TV tuner and Intel's wireless display feature to the laptop. The Y580, along with the 14-inch Y480, will both be available in April starting at $900.

Panasonic Viera touch remote appears at CES
Like UnlikeFiled in: Panasonic
It looks like Panasonic is trying a new riff on an old idea for smart TV remotes — we've just gotten images of what looks like a new touchpad remote for Viera TVs. It's a pretty simple affair, with a circular touchpad up top and channel and volume buttons down below, but it's certainly better than using a standard remote D-pad to move a cursor around. Panasonic's been down this road before — it introduced a dual-touchpad TV remote at CES 2008 that never went anywhere — but it seems like these sorts of remotes are going to be all the rage this year. We'll try and dig up some more info on this thing soon, so stay tuned.

AcerCloud unveiled, bringing free cloud connectivity to all future Acer PCs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Acer
Acer's just previewed its latest entry to cloud computing, aptly titled AcerCloud, allowing users to access multimedia and data files remotely whether or not their main PC is asleep. The feature will be available free of cost on all future consumer Acer PCs. Acer's latest enlists the outfit's Always Connect service to wake up PCs from sleep mode, enabling transfer from smartphones and tablets. Among the services included are PicStream, which allows for cloud-based photo sharing, AcerCloud Docs, for storing and accessing (guess what?) documents, and clear.fi that allows for streaming of media from the cloud to almost any device. Compatibility is currently limited to Android smartphones and ta...

Acer unveils Aspire Timeline Ultra at CES 2012
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksAcer
Acer's today announced its CES 2012 offerings. Up first, the Aspire Timeline Ultra. While we do not yet have full details (or even an image!) we do know that the ultrabook will come in 14 and 15-inch varieties, with as-yet-unspecified Intel Core i CPUs, Dolby Home Theatre v4 Surround Sound speakers, and they will feature Acer instant on, and be rated for up to 8 hours of battery life. We also hear that the Ultras will be just 20mm thick, and will have both HDMI and USB 3.0 ports. Acer says the Aspire Timeline Ultra will ship sometime during Q1 of 2012. There are no other details or pricing, but we'll keep updating as we get more information.

YouTube scam domains handed over to Google
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
We reported a while back on Google taking legal action against a phishing scammer who'd registered misspelled YouTube domains such as youtub.com. Unsurprisingly, a single-member panel at the National Arbitration Forum has found in Google's favor, with the domain owner not even filing a response to the complaint. The ruling seemed inevitable from the start, and the panel upheld Google's complaint on every count: the domains were found to be "confusingly similar" to Google's trademark and being used in bad faith, with the owner not having any relevant rights or interests to the YouTube name. As such, the offending domains will simply now be transferred into Google's ownership, with no further ...

Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430 is the first Windows laptop with Intel's Thunderbolt; Edge E430 and E530 also announced
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksLenovoThinkPad Edge S430
Lenovo figured you might just not be content with the new ThinkPad ultrabook or the dual processor / dual operating system ThinkPad Hybrid X1, so how about a smattering of ThinkPad Edge laptops? First up is the ThinkPad Edge S430, which is one of the first Windows laptops we've heard of to have Intel's forthcoming third generation Core processors (or Ivy Bridge) and Intel's Thunderbolt I/O technology. Lenovo's not sharing many other details on the spec front (we expect because Intel hasn't announced these chips quite yet), but it will also be available with Nvidia Optimus graphics and up to 1TB of storage.

Chrome 17 beta brings speed and security improvements
Like UnlikeFiled in: Google
Google has pushed a new version of Chrome into the beta channel that's designed around improving two of the browser's key aspects: speed and security. The first major change in version 17 is the ability for pages to start loading in the background before a user has even finished typing a URL into the Omnibox address and search bar.
"If the URL auto-completes to a site you're very likely to visit, Chrome will begin to prerender the page," explained Dominic Hamon, a software engineer at Google, while announcing the browser update. The pre-rendering makes the full site show up almost instantly, according to Google.

Chinese tackling human genome with NVIDIA GPUs
Like UnlikeFiled in: Graphic CardsnVIDIA
Analyzing data of the human genome is no small task. However, with the help of graphic chips, what once took genome sequencing centers days to complete, can be done in six hours. To accomplish this, BGI, a lab headquartered in Shenzhen, China, have given their servers a facelift with Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) built by Nvidia. That’s right, the same hardware that outputs images onto personal computers around the world, could account for major advances in the medical field.

NYT confirms Nokia Lumia 900 announcement at CES 2012, headed to AT&T

Rumors about Nokia's unannounced "Ace" LTE Windows Phone have been building, and now the handset is all-but-official: The New York Times cites sources who say that Nokia plans to unveil the Lumia 900 on Monday at CES, and that it will be headed to AT&T in the US. We still don't have confirmation on specs, but if the rumors hold, we're looking at a 4.3-inch WVGA display, 512MB of RAM, and 8-megapixel camera, all running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. We reached out to Microsoft for comment, and a company spokesperson had this to say:

New Denial of Service vulnerability detailed, doesn't require many PCs
Like UnlikeYou have probably heard of Distributed Denial of Service attacks, where a massive number of computers are used (and often hijacked) in order to barrage a website with requests and effectively shut it down. What you may not know is that there are denial of service (DoS) methods that don't need to be so distributed. So says security researcher Sergey Shekyan, who has developed a proof of concept that is a "Slow HTTP DoS." The "slow" method essentially makes an HTTP request to a server but does so in a way that can cause the server to hang. As Ars Technica explains, what the attacking computer does it read incoming information very slowly, which forces the target server to keep its connection o...

Lenovo's 55-inch IdeaTV K91 is the world's first Android Ice Cream Sandwich TV
Like UnlikeFiled in: TVsLenovo
Back in late November last year, Lenovo's Chinese folks teased a certain IdeaTV or LeTV for launch this year, and now we finally get to see it in its full glory. Dubbed the K91, we're looking at a 55-inch IPS 3D HDTV running Android Ice Cream Sandwich (a first for smart TVs, yet not quite a Google TV), and inside it sits a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon APQ8060. Dig a little deeper and you'll also find 1GB of RAM, 8GB storage, SD card expansion, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, 10M/100M Ethernet, HDMI and USB 2.0 connectivity (which is much needed for an external hard drive to store video content). As you can see in the pictures, the K91 will come with some Lenovo cloud services, including an app store (but t...
