ActiveVideo Network's CloudTV H5 links up with Siri, brings voice control to set-top boxes

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

So you ignored the same old design and moderately bumped specs, plunked down your plastic and picked up an iPhone 4S -- presumably on the allure of Siri. Well, that bodiless, digital lady helper's about to work her concierge magic on your cable TV. ActiveVideo Networks plans to demo an implementation of its CloudTV H5 apps platform -- including iVOD, amongst others -- to bring voice navigation to living rooms via your set-top box. After routing a user's requests over a cellular network, the company's servers do the heavy lifting and deliver the intended content and search results all supposedly in the time it would take to use a remote control. We'll be sure to get some up close and personal...

Intel WiDi to be built into many home theater chips

Intel WiDi to be built into many home theater chips

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Intel's WiDi wireless display streaming may be a bit under the radar, but that might have changed today. The company has just announced that it will be collaborating with several home theater system-on-a-chip makers to start including WiDi support. The SoC companies involved are Cavium, Mstar Semiconductor, Sigma Designs, Realtek, and Wondermedia. While you probably don't recognize those companies, their hardware may power some of your connected TV, set-top box, or other home theater equipment.
It should be a great boon for WiDi, which requires the use of an adapter unless both the transmitter (usually your laptop) and the receiver (your TV or cable box) have the hardware built-in. The news ...

According to a blog post by entrepreneur Amit Kumar, a new app called Samsung SwipeIt has started popping up on that company's smart TVs, and may be positioned as competition for Apple's AirPlay media sharing technology. Kumar mentions the app started rolling out to TVs at the beginning of the year, while the companion app for Android appeared on the Market around the same time (nothing on iTunes yet, despite a listing for an iOS app on Samsung's Korean site), promising easy sharing of photos and videos to Samsung's connected TVs. It's built by last year's Free The TV Apps competition winner MOVL and is based on that company's Connect platform, which as seen in the diagram after the break is...

LG Cinema Screen LCD HDTVs slice bezel to 1mm, let two players share one TV

Filed in: TVsLG

LG has been pushing its flavor of 3DTV as Cinema 3D, and now it has slipped the theater related nomenclature onto another feature, the 1mm thin LCD bezels it has dubbed "Cinema Screen". It claims this move brings the experience closer to the theater, but that's not the only new feature for 2012. LG announced it will offer Dual Play, where it uses polarized glasses to let two different players see only their perspective on the full screen at once in games that support it. Vizio demonstrated the feature last year as Versus and Sony brought it to market in the PlayStation 3D display. We'll likely get more time with those razor thin bezels once CES is truly underway, for now check after the brea...

Velocity Micro unveils 2 new ICS tablets - The 7-Inch Cruz T507 and 9.7-Inch Cruz T510

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

We usually don’t think of Velocity Micro as a maker of high-end devices, quite the contrary. However, they are targeting different kind of users and we applaud them for finding the niche where they can compete in.
And the best part is that they keep pushing their agenda and are preparing to unveil two new Android 4.0 tablets at the CES. The two devices are 7-Inch Cruz T507 and 9.7-Inch Cruz T510, both of which (as far as we understood) rock Cortex A8 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of built-in storage, front-facing camera for video calls, HDMI out and preloaded Amazon’s Appstore.

Sony Ericsson teases us with a new device, is it the Xperia Arc HD?

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

The Sony Ericsson Nozomi, also reffered to as the Xperia Arc Hd, hasn’t been the most well kept secret - pictures of what’s expected to be the next Sony Ericsson flagship have popped up from pretty much everywhere in the past month. But what’s interesting is that Sony Ericsson has teased a very similar device on its German Facebook page leaving us guessing what could it be.

Samsung launches new wired and wireless headsets for mobile warriors

Samsung launches new wired and wireless headsets for mobile warriors

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

Samsung isn't letting CES go by without introducing a few new accessories for its mobile devices. A pair of Bluetooth headsets are on tap, the HM1800 and HM6000 (the latter of which boasts a pair of mics for noise cancellation ) but, oddly enough, it the company's "your sound" wired models that are getting the bulk of the attention. The EHS-60, 63, 70 and 71 all offer a twist on the wired stereo headset model. The high-end 70 and 71 are crafted of aluminum and include welcome features like anti-tangle cords. The most interesting, though, are certainly the asymmetrical EHS-63s which feature an in-ear bud for higher frequencies and an open-air speaker for low-end. Check out the PR after the br...
