Lenovo IdeaTab S2: The first competitor to the ASUS Transformer Prime

Lenovo IdeaTab S2: The first competitor to the ASUS Transformer Prime

It may seem hard to believe, but one year ago at CES 2011 ASUS showed off the first generation of a new type of Android tablet that they dubbed the “Transformer”. By itself the Transformer wasn’t anything special, just another Android tablet running Honeycomb, but when it was paired with a keyboard dock it transformed (get it?) into a device that looked like an everyday laptop. The resulting combination, which gave you all the benefits of a tablet such as instant on and amazing battery life, plus the huge productivity gains that a full laptop keyboard offered, turned a lot of heads in the tech community. Last month the second generation, dubbed the “Transformer Prime”, launched and it furthe...

RIAA calls online piracy a threat to national security

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Music industry group the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has rejected OPEN (the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade Act), the bill proposed by Representative Darrell Issa and Senator Ron Wyden as an alternative to the controversy-laden SOPA. A chief difference between SOPA and OPEN is the governmental division responsible for enforcing infringements — while SOPA would be policed by the Department of Justice, OPEN would belong to the International Trade Commission.
In a blog post on the RIAA website, Senior Executive VP Mitch Glazier says that the ITC "clearly does not operate on the short time frame necessary to be effective," citing the delays in the RIM vs. ...

If you’re in Las Vegas this week, chances are you’re there to attend the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show. It’s the largest tech show in North America and it’s an event that separates the men from the boys in terms of who can best cover the insane amount of products being announced seemingly every 15 seconds. But did you know that right before CES, on January 8th and 9th, AT&T held their 2012 Developers Summit? That event didn’t get a lot of attention, despite being in Las Vegas, but one important tidbit that’s slipped out is that AT&T held a joint session with Qualcomm to discuss 4G LTE enabled Windows 8 tablets.

iPhone 4S owners use twice as much data as those on iPhone 4

iPhone 4S owners go through double the amount of mobile data as people on the iPhone 4, according to network firm Arieso. The obvious place to point the finger is Siri, as Bloomberg has done, with the voice recognition software being the biggest differentiator of the newer device. It was previously reported, however, that Siri didn't eat up all that much data, so we're not so sure. Arieso's research reveals that a tiny one percent of all users are responsible for half of all downloaded data, and we'd expect those people to also be among the earliest adopters of new hardware. Whatever the cause, it seems inevitable that carriers will continue to seek ways to cut down on burgeoning ...

Ramnit worm targets Facebook, 45,000 logins compromised

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Facebook users have had their accounts compromised once again after the Ramnit worm, traditionally used to target the financial industry, set its crosshairs on the social networking site. According to researchers at the security firm Seculert, 45,000 user accounts have been affected.
Users in France and the United Kingdom appear to be most affected by the worm's new tirade on social sites. "We suspect that the attackers behind Ramnit are using the stolen credentials to log-in to victims' Facebook accounts and to transmit malicious links to their friends, thereby magnifying the malware's spread even further", the security firm commented in a blog post.

Curious as to what that white Galaxy Nexus looks like? Retailer Clove has joined the UK retailers listing the vanilla variant of the Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone, and has shared some official images so you can see just how much white you’re getting. As with the white Nexus S before it, the display section itself is actually still black: only the edges and rear panel are changed.

Next Xbox and PS4 to be unveiled at E3 2012?

Next Xbox and PS4 to be unveiled at E3 2012?

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Rumours are rife that this year's E3 could be one of the most important shows in gaming history, with the Sony PS4 and next Xbox to be announced.
Although both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are getting a little long in the tooth, both have performed admirably in the past year, and with the arrival of motion sensors for both the life-cycle of this generation's consoles is clearly not complete.
However, the announcement of replacements grows increasingly likely with every passing year, and respected industry magazine MCV is now stating that both Sony and Microsoft will choose this summer to announce the PS4 and Xbox 360 successor respectively.

Acer Unveils the Thinnest Ultrabook, a 15

Acer Unveils the Thinnest Ultrabook, a 15" Ultrabook, a 1080p Tablet and AcerCloud

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

It technically doesn't start for another day, but CES is in full swing in Las Vegas. As part of the fun, Acer is bringing us the thinnest Ultrabook yet: The Aspire S5. This 13.3" class laptop measures just 15 mm at its thickest point and weighs in at under 3 lbs. Specs get thin from there, the Intel Core processor, SSD and sealed battery are a given; what we don't know is the size of the battery nor the price or release date, though Q2 2012 is promised. What draws our eye more than the thinness lies beneath what's being called a "MagicFlip I/O" port panel. In an homage to the original MacBook Air, Acer is including a concealed panel for connectivity beneath the display hinge. Where the origi...

AT&T talking up LTE-enabled Windows 8 tablets at Developer Summit

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

If you're looking for maximum exposure for your developer event, might as well host it during the same week at CES. For bonus points, have it in the same city. That's precisely what AT&T has done for its 2012 Developer Summit, and while the majority of the sessions won't tickle the fancy of everyday consumers, there's one slot in particular that's giving us pause. Titled "A Metro Style Hemi," an afternoon session at the event will showcase a Windows 8 tablet, reportedly powered by one of Qualcomm's many chips. There's no details on whether or not a physical unit will be on hand with an active LTE radio, but it's useful to know that Microsoft's already talking with the carrier about hosting s...

Samsung Announces Series 7 and Series 9 Monitors

Samsung Announces Series 7 and Series 9 Monitors

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG3

C27B750X seems the be the successor of C27A750X, which was the first monitor to feature Central Station technology. We analyzed Central Station in last June and to summarize it briefly, it's basically a wireless laptop docking station. You connect a USB stick to your laptop and when you come within ~5 feet of the display, it automatically connects to the display. It acts as an external monitor but you can also use the USB devices connected to the monitor. Unfortunately, the display is still 1080p but the panel type has changed. Samsung lists the type as Wide Viewing Angle LED but as far as I know, there is no such panel type. It's definitely not TN as the viewing angles are much better. It's...

Samsung smartphones pave way to record Q4 results

Samsung smartphones pave way to record Q4 results

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Cell PhonesSamsung

Samsung has reported record Q4 2012 profits largely thanks to very strong sales of its smartphone range, which cements its position as the number one mobile manufacturer in the world.
Only this year Samsung surpassed Apple as the biggest provider of smartphones in the world, which is all the more impressive when you consider that Samsung has been in the Mobile arena a very short time. Mobile phones are now the technology company's biggest source of revenue.
Results for Q4 came out at 5.2 trillion won, up 73 percent from the same time last year, whilst total profits for 2011 ended at a whopping 16.2 trillion won.
Recent results for Samsung sales stands 27.8 million smartphones sold compared t...

Geeks Crown Firefox and Safari as the Best Browsers

Geeks Crown Firefox and Safari as the Best Browsers

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Web browser improvements seem to pop out at a pace barely detectable to the human eye, so periodically Tom's Hardware will go through every desktop browser on Windows and OS X with a fine-toothed comb and tell you which one comes out on top. This time around, they like Firefox and Safari.

Firefox and Safari trounced through much of the competition in nearly every category tested, though they felt Chrome performed admirably. Surprisingly, Chrome tested worse than even Internet Explorer in the HTML5 and WebGL tests, but consistently proved it could load a page faster than any other browser. Firefox, while fast and powerful, still is incapable of containing memory leaks. And on OS X at least, ...

Google fined, required to change unfavorable search results by French court

Google fined, required to change unfavorable search results by French court

Posted on Jan 09, 2012 by MG1

Filed in: Google

French insurance company Lyonnaise de Garantie didn't take kindly to being associated with the French words for "crook" and "con man" in Google's search results, so it sued the search giant and won: a French court has fined Google $65,000 and required it to remove the offending words from its autocomplete results. Google argued unsuccessfully that it was not liable, since the word association was the result of an automated algorithm.
This isn't the first time Google's had legal woes in Europe, but this particular precedent could be troublesome for the company — if the rest of Europe emulates the French court, then Google could be faced with similar lawsuits from those with algorithmically ba...
