Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

Apart from the Z77H2-AX, ECS showed off a mainstream socket LGA1155 motherboard based on the H77 "Panther Point" chipset, in the micro-ATX form-factor. The H77 chipset has the same feature-set as the Z77, except it lacks Rapid Storage Technology, and overclocking features. Out of the box, this board supports next-generation "Ivy Bridge" Core processors.

The LGA1155 socket is powered by a 6-phase VRM. It is wired to four DDR3 DIMM slots supporting dual-channel DDR3 memory; and a PCI-Express 3.0 x16 slot. Other slots include a PCIe 2.0 x1, and two legacy PCI slots driven by an ITE-made bridge chip. Storage connectivity includes two SATA 6 Gb/s, and four SATA 3 Gb/s, all wired to the PCH. Dis...

Virgin Media to double broadband speeds this year, BT smirks

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG1

Virgin Media customers are in for a big treat today, because the UK-based ISP has just announced plans to double the average speed of its broadband service. Over the course of the next 18 months, top speeds will increase from 100 Mbps to 120Mbps, as part of a £110 million ($169 million) initiative. Users on 10Mbps, 20Mbps and 50Mbps plans, meanwhile, will see their speeds and bandwidth usage limits doubled, at no extra charge. The upgrade is slated to begin rolling out in February, and should be complete by the middle of next year. Competing company BT, meanwhile, was quick to point out the similarity between Virgin Media's new campaign and its own upgrade. "It is no surprise to see that Vir...

Nokia's Lumia 710, its first Windows Phone for the US, is on sale now

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG1

It's been a long time coming, but you can finally buy a Nokia Windows Phone in the US. T-Mobile launched the Lumia 710 today in black and white for $49.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and with the requisite 2-year contract. We still think it's a fair price, despite the few qualms we had with the device when we reviewed it, but the forthcoming Lumia 900 puts a damper on our enthusiasm for this device a bit. However, it's not for us; it's for first-time smartphone buyers, and still seems like a solid choice for that market. Despite the Lumia 710's status as an entry-level device, it's exciting to see Nokia have a major US release for the first time in months.

Hackers expose Israeli government SCADA logins

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG1

The drama surrounding Israel continues to unfold as a group of Anonymous hackers expose employee logins to several government websites. Perhaps most disturbingly, this document (may be taken down any time) also claims the credentials provided give access to a number of Israel's SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) systems. The document itself includes emails, passwords, hashes and 10 IP addresses that are supposedly Israeli SCADA systems.
At this time of this writing, there were few details regarding the implications. However, such systems are typically used to monitor and regulate processes for industrial control purposes, such as a agricultural complexes, factories or public se...

U.S. PC Shipments Down 6% in Q4 2011, Apple Up 21%

Posted on Jan 12, 2012 by MG15

It appears that PCs are just not the hot gift idea they once were. According to Gartner, U.S. PC shipments were down almost 6% in the fourth quarter of 2011. Apple, however, continues to grow its market share with sales up nearly 21% in the same time. This pushes Apple to the number 3 spot in the U.S. computer market. Still far in the lead are HP and Dell, which have 23% and 22% of the market respectively. Apple’s overall market share is 11%. Lenovo’s sales actually grew by 40%, but it sells so few units in America that it did not figure in the top tier of makers. Apple is the only manufacturer in the top five that grew at all. Apple’s good fortune can be accounted for partially by its retai...

Apple is sending out invitations that it will hold an "education announcement" January 19 at the Guggenheim in NYC. Most rumors point to the unveiling of electronic textbooks, something Steve Jobs had been keen to do from the very beginning, and has reportedly worked on the project to his last days. The event is not expected to have any hardware announcement, but an iTunes University (iTunes U) project is expected to be detailed too, as part of the "education announcement". What will these rumored electronic textbooks and iTunes University announcements entail can only be guessed for now, but word on the street was that the projects have been in the making for years, and Apple moved this eve...
