Update to Google Maps improves battery life, public transit options and more
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
A new version of Google Maps has hit the Android Market today, which simultaneously brings fresher location tracking within Latitude and better battery life -- two welcome improvements that seem contrary to one another. There's also a couple goodies included for the transit-minded folks, as Navigation has been updated to better estimate location when GPS signal is lost, and the number of route options for public transit users has been increased from three to four. Sure, the changes are rather incremental, but who's honestly going to argue with greater battery life? Not us, that's for sure.

Samsung's Chromebox Is Coming Mid-2012, But Who The Hell Is It Aimed At?
Like UnlikeFiled in: Desktop ComputersSamsungXE300M22-A01US
Since Sammy announced in early 2011 that it was planning to release a Chromebox, everybody forgot about the idea. Now the company has announced it's shipping mid-2012, but we're not sure it knows exactly who's going to buy it. The exact specs aren't final, but Engadget reports from CES that it definitely has a handful of ports, including five USB 2.0 sockets, DVI, DisplayPort and a headphone jack, and comes bundled with a wireless keyboard-and-mouse combo. It should cost in the region of $400, and ship sometime in the second quarter of 2012. But the big question is: who's it for?

Google's Schmidt: No Android fragmentation, only differentiation - SlashGear
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
Google‘s Eric Schmidt has again denied there is any fragmentation problem within Android, claiming that the platform instead shows customer-friendly “differentiation.” Speaking at CES this week, where many manufacturers revealed devices running older versions of Android but promised Ice Cream Sandwich upgrades at some point later this year, Schmidt argued that “differentiation is positive, fragmentation is negative,” PCMag reports. The deciding factor, he claimed, was that apps ran across devices on different iterations of Android.

Cyborg Freq 5 gaming headset lets you frag now, call friends and family lateR
Like UnlikeFiled in: HeadphonesMadCatzCyborg F.R.E.Q. 5
Mad Catz is adding to its line of Cyborg gaming peripherals with the Freq 5, a new gaming headset with some flexible features. Utilizing a similar design language as the Rat line of gaming mice — all jagged corners and metal accents — the USB headset features 50mm drivers with neodymium magnets, a removable noise-canceling microphone, and microphone, volume, and equalizer controls built right into one of the earpieces. You can also swap out the USB cord with the included 3.5mm audio cable, turning the Freq 5 into a standard audio headset that can be used with an MP3 player or for making calls on your smartphone (strangely, the headset is listed as being compatible with the iPhone, and HTC an...

Gigabyte's 7-Series Ivy Bridge Motherboards at CES
Like UnlikeFiled in: MotherboardsGIGABYTEGA-Z77X-UD3H (rev. 1.0)G1.Sniper 3 (rev. 1.0)G1.Sniper M3 (rev.1.0)
Gigabyte had five of its upcoming 7-series motherboards on display at CES today. While Gigabyte isn't talking about all of the features that will be available at launch, we will see an mSATA connector on some boards (GA-Z77X-UD3H) for use with smaller SSDs as a NAND cache in front of a hard drive. Gigabyte also showcased its G1.Sniper M3, a high-end micro-ATX motherboard. As Ivy Bridge brings down max TDPs at the high end, this may finally be the beginning of a transition to smaller desktops - even in the enthusiast space. The transition doesn't have to be huge, but perhaps it's time for some more innovation in the desktop space when it comes to form factors.

Motorola working on next-generation Webtop with Chrome support
Like UnlikeFiled in: NotebooksMotorola
In our roundtable discussion with Sanjay Jha today, Motorola's CEO slipped a couple revelations around its Webtop initiative — the laptop-alternative OS tucked away on many of the company's newer Android phones. As it exists today, the system has been widely panned for its limited capabilities — it's basically desktop Firefox with access to your Android applications — but Jha says that work on the next iteration of Webtop is underway. "Financial, in terms of our take-up rate, it's somewhere in the nine percent range," Jha said, suggesting that less than a tenth of buyers of Webtop-capable Moto devices are actually using it. When asked whether they'll continue using Firefox, he said that they...

Zalman Updates the CNPS Line, Shows Off Cases
Like UnlikeZalman's lineup at this year's CES was more evolutionary than revolutionary, and unfortunately some of the more interesting products (Zalman-branded SSDs and video cards) aren't yet bound for U.S. shores. That latter one is a shame, too, since Zalman produces some excellent aftermarket cooling for GPUs.
What we do have are evolutions of Zalman's existing lineup of CPU coolers. The CNPS series gets a series of small upgrades. The old flower-style Zalman HSF unit now has a more rigid circular design and a pair of heatpipes that circle the bottoms of the copper films; this is the CNPS8900. The tower-style CNPS11X sees a slight shift in design, and the "floating fan" CNPS9900MAX now has a very b...

Semiconductor company MediaTek has introduced a system-on-a-chip (SoC) that will be used to power wireless routers based on the 802.11ac wireless networking standard, which promises gigabit speeds, the company said on Monday.
The upcoming 802.11ac standard will offer higher speeds than what is currently possible using 802.11n thanks to the use of more spectrum and more advanced antenna technology.

T-Mobile announces the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, available 'later this year'
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsungT-Mobile
Hot on the heels of the Galaxy S II's success, T-Mobile's getting another Samsung 4G device brewed up. The new smartphone, called the Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G, isn't set to be available until later this year, which unfortunately means we're getting very little details at the moment. According to the press release, the Blaze will have a 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 42Mbps HSPA+ and a "brilliant Super AMOLED touch screen." Again, this is all we have been given at the moment, and we're confused by the fact that the display doesn't have an HD in front nor a Plus in back, as well as the phone's use of "Galaxy S" in the title. As always, it's our hope that this CES announcement will be shortly followed ...
