LG and Microsoft sign patent agreement over Android and Chrome OS
Like UnlikeFiled in: LGMicrosoftGoogle
Microsoft and LG have signed a patent agreement that covers LG’s tablets, mobile phones, and other consumer devices running Android or Chrome OS. Terms of the deal between the two companies have not being disclosed. However, this isn’t the first time Microsoft has targeted an Android vendor, previously signing deals with Samsung, HTC, and Acer, among others. “Together with our 10 previous agreements with Android and Chrome OS device manufacturers, including HTC, Samsung and Acer, this agreement with LG means that more than 70 percent of all Android smartphones sold in the U.S. are now receiving coverage under Microsoft’s patent portfolio,” said Horacio Gutierrez, corporate vice president and...

Motorola website points to January 26th launch for Droid RAZR Maxx
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesMotorolaDROID RAZR MAXX
Motorola didn't provide a launch date for the Droid RAZR Maxx when it officially announced the consonant-heavy phone at CES earlier this week, but it's now filled in that little detail on its website. Assuming it's not a mistake of some sort, you can look for the latest addition to the RAZR family to be available on January 26th from both Verizon and Motorola itself. If you missed the announcement, the Maxx is mostly identical to the existing Droid RAZR, with the notable exception of a longer-lasting battery that promises 21 hours of use on a charge, and 32GB of storage instead of the standard 16GB. It'll also set you back $100 more than the standard RAZR.

Will Zune be renamed to Microsoft Music, completely abandoned, or what?

It’s been rumored for a long time now that the Zune brand would eventually be killed off, considering the commercial failure of the Zune music players. But alas, Zune has lived on as the music service integrated into Windows Phone and Xbox, and the Zune desktop software is used to synchronize Windows Phones with PCs, suggesting that Microsoft was looking to retain Zune as a brand similar to Apple’s iTunes.
In all Windows 8 demos and previews to date, however, the Zune branding was notably absent, and Neowin is now claiming that they’ve seen a possible replacement for it, on Windows 8 devices shown at CES, that’s called Microsoft Music.

RIM hires Goldman Sachs to possibly field buyout offers
Like UnlikeFiled in: RIM BlackBerry
It’s Friday the 13th, and what’s more appropriate than some grim Research in Motion news? Rumors are swirling that the BlackBerry maker has hired investment bank Goldman Sachs to help actively shop itself to potential buyers. According to Reuters, one unidentified trader said yesterday that RIM is “up on Goldman,” but cautioned that it doesn’t mean a sale is coming anytime soon. This only further adds to growing speculation of a RIM sell, something that has been ongoing for months now. It’s been widely speculated that Amazon, Microsoft and Nokia has shown an interest in scooping up the struggling Canadian-based manufacturer, but changed their mind.

Smartphone addicts report hearing 'phantom vibrations' when alone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell Phones
Most of us use our smartphones at a healthy rate, occasionally checking email, talking or texting friends, surfing the web, or playing some games throughout a regular day. Some smartphone users, however, obsessively cling to their phones night and day. This smartphone addiction gets so intense that these users are reporting hearing “phantom vibrations” — that is mistakenly thinking your phone vibrated with a new call or text message when it didn’t.

RIP: T-Mobile G2x; was T-Mobile's first dual-core phone
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesT-MobileG2x
A screenshot of T-Mobile's recently discontinued items obtained by TmoNews, shows that the T-Mobile G2x was declared EOL on January 6th. Now many phones pass away with nary any notice. But the T-Mobile G2x was special as the device was the first dual-core powered smartphone for the carrier, while its overseas variant was the first dual-core model on the planet. That is not to say that the T-Mobile G2x led an untroubled life. Numerous times the phone was recalled and unavailable for purchase.
When the T-Mobile G2x first launched, sales took off forcing the carrier to raise the price by $50 to keep demand and supply in balance. YouTube videos showing the browser on the overseas version of the...

Nokia N9 upcoming update to bring video conferencing, folders a la iOS
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIAN9
Nokia has pleasantly surprised us by delivering timely updates to its Nokia N9 one and only MeeGo device, and another major update, PR 1.2 is on the way. The update will enable the front facing camera and will let you use it to video call your friends. It also adds folders working in iOS-like fashion, support for copy-paste in the browser and other enhancements.
MeeGo 1.2 Harmattan is definitely a more refined version and adds a needed coat of polish to the otherwise very innovative Swipe UI. Some of the new features like the folders one might spark controversy over how new they are when compared with other operating systems, but they’re a welcome addition anyway. The camera application and ...

Verizon extended batteries 50% off for 4G LTE smartphones
Like UnlikeFiled in: Verizon Wireless
Are you unsatisfied with the battery life of your 4G LTE smartphone? Now is your chance to give it a boost. Verizon is chopping 50 percent off batteries for its full range of 4G LTE phones. Once $49.99, each battery is now on sale for just $24.99 — a good price if you consider how ridiculously expensive fifty bucks is for a battery.
Verizon isn’t exactly touting this sale. In fact, it’s doing quite the opposite: staying pretty silent. The deal was originally thought to be just for the Galaxy Nexus. After struggling to find any confirmation that a sale for batteries was actually going on, one DroidLife reader called Verizon Wireless. The representative informed him that all batteries for 4G p...

Anonymous joins anti-SOPA blackout as Wikipedia mulls support
Like UnlikeLoosely-gathered hack collective Anonymous has announced it too will be joining reddit’s anti-SOPA blackout on January 18, with Wikipedia apparently considering to participate in the online protest as well. ”On Jan 18th you will see no tweets from this account between 8a and 8p EST in support of #SOPAblackout!” the group’s AnonymousIRC account tweeted, referring to the user-curated site’s decision to go offline to raise awareness of the pending act. Meanwhile, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales said he was “all in favor” of the blackout, and that it would be great if [Wikipedia] could act quickly to coordinate with Reddit.”

CyanogenMod reaches 1 million unique downloads
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsGoogleAndroid
As long as smartphone manufacturers keep slapping ugly skins on their Android handsets and then refusing to upgrade them to the latest version of the operating system, there's going to be a place in the world for custom Android ROMs. CyanogenMod is among the most popular, and this morning the developers involved announced that it has been downloaded by one million unique users. The rooting community is still a small sect of Android users, but it's a growing one, and with good reason — it's been reported to improve battery life and performance on nearly every phone it supports. It also removes carrier and manufacturer bloatware and skins, adds some unique and new features, and keeps Android u...

Sony Music Unlimited bringing its own streaming flair to iOS soon
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsSonyAppleiOS 5
We heard back in December that Sony's fledgling Music Unlimited service would eventually be spreading its wings to cover even more operating systems, and here at CES 2012, we've learned that it's Apple's own iOS on the docket. Tim Schaaff, head of Sony Entertainment Network noted this week that the company will offer a gratis iPhone and iPad app for Music Unlimited "at some point this quarter." It's bruited that the iOS edition will offer offline caching for subscribers to its service (at least the premium ones), enabling 'em to save playlists for listening even when away from a network connection. Naturally, Sony's got some stiff competition in the world of iOS tunage, but it's hoping that ...
