Unknown Samsung device gets Wi-Fi certification, could be Galaxy Note successor
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsSamsung
A couple of mysterious Samsung devices were just spotted in the Wi-Fi Alliance's database after receiving Wi-Fi certification – the Samsung GT-N8000 and GT-N8013. What we are dealing with here is not quite clear, but let us put on our deerstalker, take out our magnifying glass, and make a prediction backed up by some old-fashioned logic. So, the device with a model number closest to the ones listed is the Samsung Galaxy Note, also known as the GT-N7000. That said, it could be that the two new devices have quite a lot to do with it. On one hand, these two new model numbers may belong to a Galaxy Note successor. But on the other hand, a Galaxy Note successor might carry a GT-N7100 model name, ...

Apple iPad 3 on track for March shipments, thanks to the early Chinese New Year
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsAppleiPad 3
The Japanese source for all things Apple Macotakara reports that thanks to the Chinese New Year coming earlier in 2012, Foxconn and Pegatron's iPad 3 production schedule has been sped up. The two Chinese manufacturers are rumored to split production 85% to 15%, respectively, just as they do with the iPhone 4S, but we've heard rumors that Apple is aiming to switch more of the iPad line production to Pegatron, leaving Foxconn focused on handsets, where most of its fat profit margins come from. The first iPad 3 batch would be ready in early March, and it will be the one with Sharp's panels, so the first buyers will get to taste what is shaping to be a long lasting relationship between Apple and...

Apple acquires flash memory company Anobit
Like UnlikeFiled in: Apple
Apple confirmed it has acquired flash memory parts maker Anobit. The company is based in Israel and has been vital in making flash storage for devices such as the iPhone and iPad. The acquisition will help Apple in the long-run with its clear shift toward an all-flash future — flash storage, that is. As one familiar with Apple might expect, Steve Dowling, spokesperson for the company, wouldn’t go into detail about the plans or goals for the Anobit acquisition. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” was the best Dowling offered.
According to a report from Sanford C. Bernstein & Co., Apple is the world’s largest NAND fl...

Team Douche asking if you want a root app store for Cyanogenmod
Like UnlikeFor a long long time now, iOS users who have jailbroken their devices have had the Cydia app store as a one-stop repository for apps to use on your newly jailbroken device, but Android doesn't have anything similar for those who root their devices. Of course, Android may not particularly need one, because you can get many apps for root users right in the official Android Market. But, Team Douche wants to know if you would also like an app store specifically for root users. The store would not be limited to Cyanogenmod users, and would be compatible with all rooted devices. The logic behind the possible store has been laid out by Koush, a Cyanogenmod developer, who says essentially that the A...

Windows Phone users download more apps than the Android folks, less than the iOS junkies
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows Phone 7Windows Phone 7.5
Microsoft, and the head of developer relations for Windows Phone in particular, Brandon Watson, released a fluff infographic today to explain how the app ecosystem performed in 2011. The Marketplace app store reached 50 000 applications recently, and the infographic shows what type and number of apps people are downloading. Turns out that the average Windows Phone user got 48 apps from there in 2011, compared to 30 for Android and 83 for iOS. This might have to do with the number of apps - although 50 000 sounds more than you'll need in a lifetime, iOS is ten times that, so people get enticed easily when a new quality app comes across. Another interesting part is that all in all 13 000 of t...

Microsoft demoes Windows 8 pre-beta at CES: more customization options and new media players in tow
Like UnlikeFiled in: Operating SystemsMicrosoftWindows 8
Despite grumbling at CES's scheduling, which apparently doesn't coincide with Microsoft's Cyrcadian rhythms, and announcing its withdrawal from the show for next year, the software giant did, however, demonstrate a pre-beta 8175 build of Windows 8. The build shows that Microsoft is on track to release the public beta in February, and hinted at new features, like the ability to change the Start menu color scheme and other personalization options, such as a transparent Charms bar. On the media side of things, the new video and audio players with the Metro interface that will be in the public beta were showcased. The pre-beta build also includs a new gesture to get Metro apps out of the way, as...

Verizon says (almost) 'all' future phones and tablets will be LTE
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesTabletsVerizon Wireless
In case you hadn't noticed, Verizon is going all in on LTE. And that doesn't just mean investing heavily in its network and snatching up spectrum left and right -- it also means making the 4G tech a "hard requirement" for all future devices. Outside of a few exceptions, primarily limited to its push-to-talk offerings, all upcoming phones, tablets and mobile hotspots will boast an LTE radio. Verizon's associate director of device marketing, Keith Lampron, assured CNET that the company isn't going to turn into an iPhone and Android only outlet -- Windows Phone and BlackBerry offerings are welcome to join Big Red, so long as they hop on the 700MHz train.

Nokia confirms Lumia 900 doesn't have Pentile display
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesNOKIALumia 900
While we knew the Lumia 900 would have "Clear Black" AMOLED display, what we didn't know was whether it would sport a Pentile Matrix layout (like the Lumia 800). Well, fret no more friends, it's official -- the Lumia 900 has a full battery of subpixels in an RGB array. Nokia confirmed as such earlier via it's US Twitter account in reply to a user's inquiry. Between LTE and the RGB panel it looks like Nokia has its first genuinely lust-worthy Mango device on its hands.

Huawei MediaPad to ship with Ice Cream Sandwich, older models will be updated

Existing models of the MediaPad will receive an Android 4.0 update by the end of the first quarter, and new MediaPads will come pre-loaded with the software beginning some time the first quarter. Additionally, the tablet will be offered in the current color scheme, and will add shadow black, classic brown, and passion pink to the mix. Samsung Mandel, 4G LTE Windows Phone, fails to show up at CES
Like UnlikeFiled in: Cell PhonesSamsung
Nokia’s Lumia 900 may have received a ton of attention at CES this year, but it was just one of two Windows Phones that AT&T announced, the other being the 16 megapixel packing HTC Titan II. Impressive as both those devices may be, we were expecting to see a third Windows Phone with 4G LTE show up at CES from Samsung. According to a user agent profile discovered by Pocketnow, there’s a device called that Samsung SGH-i667 that exists somewhere in the wild. Said device is codenamed Mandel, and it’s rumored to be the successor to the Samsung Focus S, which was released just two months ago. Specification wise it’s going to be just like every other Windows Phone running Mango, and it’s supposedly...

Orange UK launches Tahiti, a self-branded Android tablet
Like UnlikeFiled in: TabletsOrangeTahiti
After debuting its first self-branded tablet in Europe last year, Orange has now announced the Tahiti, a budget tablet launched today in the UK. Although the 7-inch tablet is Orange-branded, it's made by Huawei, with a 1.2Ghz dual-core processor, 5-megapixel camera, and Android 3.2. The major draw, however, will probably be its price point — it's £69.99 (about $108) with a two-year contract. Unfortunately, the contract itself is a bit pricey, at £25 for 2GB of data, 1GB of which can only be used on off-peak hours. It also comes bundled free with the two-year data plan when buying the San Francisco II smartphone, allowing 2GB of data to be shared between phone and tablet for £41 a month.

Bang & Olufsen's TVs aren't exactly for everyone, but those willing to spare no expense to turn a few heads now have yet another impressive model to consider form the company. It's just announced its new BeoVision 12-65, a plasma TV that makes use of a so-called NeoPDP panel and some clever design touches that make the 65-inch set appear as thin as possible. It's also naturally full HD and 3D compatible, and it packs an integrated center channel speaker that can be paired with a surround sound setup. Alongside it, B&O has also debuted its new BeoLab 12 loudspeakers, which pack a total of 480W and once again place a heavy emphasis on style. No word on pricing for either just yet, but the TV w...

Samsung considering more advanced CSC
Like UnlikeFiled in: CamerasSamsungNX11NX200
Samsung is considering producing a more advanced compact system camera with more traditional style controls in order to attract enthusiast photographers, according to Nick White, Head of Digital Imaging at Samsung UK. Speaking candidly to TechRadar, White said that 2011 had been a tough year for its compact system cameras and they have failed to achieve the sales figures that the company believe they merit. Despite many favourable reviews, Samsung's CSCs have suffered from fierce competiton and aggressive advertising campaigns from other manufacturers, particularly in the run up to Christmas.

First Look: HzO internal waterproofing for gadgets
Like UnlikeWhen Motorola introduced the Droid Razr, the handset's internal water-resistant coating appeared to be a unique feature in the smartphone market. Electronista spoke with a separate company, HzO, that has taken the technology much further, enabling smartphones to be completely submerged underwater without the need for an external case. HzO's WaterBlock system coats internal components with a waterproof layer using vapor deposition to form an extremely thin coating that is claimed to quietly protect circuitry without affecting factors such as heat dissipation. Motorola carefully words its description of similar technology in the Droid Razr, labeling it as resistant to water splashes. Most phon...

AMD Demonstrates Trinity APU, Its Own Thunderbolt-Alternative
Like UnlikeFiled in: AMD
AMD's next-generation accelerated processing unit (APU), codenamed "Trinity", was demonstrated at CES. Trinity will make up AMD's 2012 A-Series APU lineup, and will be designed for mainstream-thru-performance notebooks, and mainstream desktops (different standards for different form-factors). Pictured below is what its notebook-specific BGA package looks like. The package has an exposed rectangular die, with a stabilizer frame around it (like with GPUs). Notebooks' cooling assembly heat pipes make direct contact with the die. Trinity packs two Piledriver modules (an evolution of Bulldozer), and DirectX 11.1 AMD Radeon HD 7000M graphics (notebook APU) or HD 7000D (desktop APU).
